That's the first time I've heard anyone complaining about something being too big ;).

From what I gather, Anime Limited outsourced production for their releases in France and clearly, they aren't doing anything near the quality of the UK side? Heck, Andrew outright stating on his company's Facebook page that he's disappointed in a product his company released says it all really.

It's more that I left instructions in other people's hands in France and they managed to somehow get it all off kilter. I'm not super happy with the quality given the work I have exerted on the UK for quality of packaging but the packaging is no worse than what KAZE outputted on titles like Persona 4 or Tiger & Bunny TV series. It's not what I was out to achieve though.

Mix in with overworked, understaffed team in France and obviously delays kicked off so pre-orders weren't shipped before Japan Expo as stock only came in just in time for it.

Soooo they have fair reason to be upset - I wish people weren't so rude about it on our UK page as nobody on that is linked to the problems, but I'm shuffling things round to course correct in future!

Figured you'd be interested!

Andrew

Yeah, there was no need for that. Especially the ones that were comments on the AL 'statuses' and not on the wall...I was tempted several times to comment back, but I didn't want to make it worse. So, I just liked your comments for a sort of moral support.

It sucks when these things happen, but I know you'll sort it out. You care so much about the products you release and it shows, they'll be so pleased with their products once they've been given the UK treatment.

Are the @Anime titles authored here or in France? One of the issues someone mentioned in particular sounds very familiar.

Ah, that makes sense. All the wrong things happening at the wrong time then?

I have to admit, I was taken aback by just how rude some of the comments are. I mean, I know we can be a miserable bunch at times but....I do think some of them took things a bit too far.

(Also, I loved the Kazé Tiger & Bunny TV sets. If that's the kind of quality they moan about then oh well, we'll just have it instead :p).

It comes in a rigid box you could live in, which considering property prices in the UK may be a viable option.

Could they be releasing SM or Kai with one artbox big enough to fit the entire original series in it?

Manga never does that for anything and certainly won't do it for Kai or Moon.

If locked subs is your idea of a fun time then don't let me stop you...

In my opinion, the Kaze Tiger & Bunny sets really damaged the show in the UK. The packaging might have looked nice, but I genuinely believe the way it was released in so many high-priced volumes put a lot of people off what could have been a big seller (appreciate it might have had to have been released this way due to licensing)

Authored in France - but a lot of the studios use the same software, so it depends what the issue is per se?

I think some of it is likely part of a coordinated campaign from some of our shadier competitors in France (definitely not KAZE or Dybex anyway) - as we've taken a lot of classic titles they used to sell cheaply (as they didn't pay royalties to Japan) and are releasing them properly.

I get the issues as I say - the price point set didn't match (for me anyway) what we were outputting but the team is learning and I'm not super cool to the degree we have given there is no attempt to understand we're a different part of things. Ho-hum, best I can do is be relatively polite and get on with sorting it I guess!

Personally, locked titles don't really bother me, as I don't understand Japanese so would have no need to watch something in that language without subtitles.

WHAT? Oh no you didn't.

Didn't notice or pay attention to these from the FAQ below:

I read somewhere online that an episode of anime costs $145,000 to make. Why are you asking for $500,000?
Back in 2010, a report popped up online that quoted data from a Japanese research company called Media Development Research Institute, which cited a figure of $145,000 (in 2010) to produce a single episode of a thirty minute anime.

What is often overlooked is that this figure represents production costs for a pre-existing series, but does not factor in everything else necessary to get that series started in the first place. There are a huge amount of set-up costs that come with creating and distributing a new series that is overlooked. For an ongoing series, the producers have already done the one-time costs of building assets and can cover the costs over the life of an entire season (or multiple seasons!), giving the illusion that a single episode costs a lot less to produce.

It takes more than a pile of lumber to build a house – you’ve got to plan it out and then bring in the right people to make it happen. Creating a pilot episode for a new series requires pre-production and design work for characters, backgrounds and mecha, building a new sound effects library, scoring new music, etc. On top of that, we have to factor in the cost of mastering and manufacturing DVDs/Blu-rays, digital distribution fees, Kickstarter fees, Amazon Payments fees, not to mention the cost of shipping all this great stuff to you. None of these costs factor into the MDRI figure since we’re looking at a very different type of distribution model.

Why should I support Harmony Gold when they hate Macross?
If you love all things Robotech, you'll want to take part in the KickStarter for Robotech Academy! At Harmony Gold, we're huge fans of Macross, and our company has supported the brand since the 1980s, during a time when it was almost impossible to find anime on TV in North America. However, we want to make it clear that Harmony Gold licensed the exclusive rights to distribute Macross and its derivatives outside of Japan. The company has acquired these rights through all the official and legal channels in good faith, and we have protected these rights successfully for the last 30 years.
Not to mention 4 people donated $5000 to this Kickstarter, seriously?

Yeah, I'd heard about that. I wasn't mentioning it because I wanted to give it as little publicity as possible. If I could actually pledge money to take the equivalent amount of funding back OUT of this Kickstarter, I would. Harmony Gold needs to die.

I guess I'm not helping about it, but here's a good idea of what they've done in the past. They even tried to trademark Macross in Japan and Asia.

I can't believe people are effectively pledging huge amounts of money for the privilege of giving Harmony Gold a free pass to 'protect their right' to use their likenesses for decades to come

Who would ever sign a contract with these people again after the way they're obsessed with blocking anyone outside Japan from having access to the various versions of Macross?

R

Yeah. I've heard people defend Harmony Gold before on the grounds that they aren't actually stopping anyone from licensing Macross. This is true. However, for anyone who isn't aware, they did opportunistically copyright "Macross" in the parts of the world they realised Japan hadn't, meaning anyone who ever wants to licence a Macross property would have to pay them for doing absolutely nothing other than owning the copyright to a franchise they had no hand in creating. Understandably, this means we don't get any Macross. Because why would anyone want to incur the extra cost of paying Harmony Gold money for nothing?

"At Harmony Gold, we're huge fans of Macross, as our company has been able to successfully uphold our right to leech off the brand since the 1980s"

If Harmony Gold was a gattai mech, it would form entirely out of lawyers. They're interested in money, and little else.

As mentioned during the announcement of the film's sequel, Pacific Rim's animated series is in negotiations with a few Japanese companies (in other words, it's going to be an anime). The director of Pacific Rim planned the anime to be at least 13 episodes.
