Section23 are releasing Elfen Lied on blu-ray in September..WITH THE OVA!

ALL OF MY MONEY - TAKE IT! TAKE IT ALL!

EDIT:
Here's a comparison between ADV's region 1 DVD and the Japanese blu-ray. Quite a noticeable improvement, especially considering the age of the show.

Nice, adding this to my list. Though is the OAV dubbed? seems unlikely unless they did it back then assuming they get the rights and it never actually happened?
They'll probably dub the OVA while they're sorting out the rest of the English audio track.

oh God no...
There was enough blood in the show without it pouring from my ears, think the only one I liked there was Nana who would pop up regularly

I doubt they will. Hasn't Elfen Lied been off the market for a while in the US? Besides, the HOTD DOTD DVD is only exclusive to Comic Con and UP1. I'll be rebuying this for the show on blu-ray.
I'm pretty sure Elfen Lied is still pretty easily available in the US. ADV are still operating over there.
Are they?

The more you know...
They're not, there's just an excessive amount of stock of the last complete collection floating around (plus ADV handed over all their licenses to Aesir holdings who have released a few of them under their own label).

I don't like Black Bars either. If they were meant to be like that why do they release DVDs that play widescreen I.e. Cowboy Bebop Remix, it's plays Widescreen but the new Blu-rays are gonna be 4:3.

Each to their own though.

Remix is 4:3, it's not widescreen, unless you have your TV on zoom mode.
Finally got round to replying.

Your correct about Bebop, my mistake but that brings me to what's annoying about the Blu-ray releases, they force you to watch it with the black bars.

I'm just watching Naruto which has a ratio of 4:3. My TV is set to 16:9 (recommended setting) so it fills the screen. If I want to watch it in 4:3 I can select Original or 4:3 ratio, giving me a choice but Ninja Scroll Blu-ray for example even when it's on 16:9 its got Black Bars, why am I forced to watch it that way on Blu-ray but not DVD?

Just to note, I know the recent ninja scroll DVD is actually the same as the Blu-ray but normally DVDs aren't locked to the aspect ratio i.e Bebop, Naruto etc

Blu-ray HD Content is always encode widescreen, pretty sure all HD content is anyway. If a programs OAR is 4:3, they encode it pillar boxed to allow it to A) fit the widescreen radio without messing up the AR and B) comply with the Blu-ray disc specification. On Blu-ray 4:3 HD content, the black bars down the side are part of the picture.

Watching 4:3 content stretched to fit 16:9 or zooming it to fit 16:9 is just wrong, and in my opinion is a disgrace and shouldn't be done. Stretched and everything looks squashed and fat, zooming it in and tops of heads start getting chopped off.

Only standard def content can be encode to 4:3 on Blu-ray.

I shall just quote myself from earlier:

It's all down to preference for black bars versus filling your entire TV up I guess. I mean for a 4:3 image I'd much rather have this:

Than seeing it either squished like this:

Or cropped like this:

It's amazing how things have changed though. 10 years ago it was all about widescreen movies not filling 4:3 TVs and having the black bars on the top and bottom. Resulting in the release of the monstrosities known as pan-and-scan full screen DVDs. Ah well, as long as the video on the disc itself is the way it was intended to be seen, then anyone can mess about it with their TV settings to suit their preferences :)
I'm sure your TV has the option to stretch (and distort ;) ) a pillarboxed 4:3 into a 16:9 frame if you so desire, unless it's really old. As for why your Naruto DVDs auto fill up your TV, that's probably a combination of your DVD player settings and the way DVDs encode video (look up anamorphic widescreen to get an idea of how it works). I'd elaborate but I'd need more info about your settings, plus I'm typing this on a phone that's running low on power.

A while back, there was a listing that showed up which appeared to show that Funimation were going to rerelease the original Ocean dub of DBZ's first couple of sagas. Now it's doubly confirmed, with the ROCK THE DRAGON boxset.

Funimation just sent over a note to let us know they are adding a new special edition release of the original broadcast version of DragonBall Z to the schedule:

DragonBall Z Rock the Dragon Collector's Edition DVD Boxed Set

The box will street on August 20th. MSRP will be $99.98

Release highlights:
• Contains Eps #1-53 + 3 Movies (Dead Zone, the Worlds Strongest, and Tree of Might) on 9 DVD's.
• Each Collector's Edition comes in a hardbound, full color 48 page book; which showcases the characters, history, and tropes that helped elevate Dragon Ball Z to the pop culture phenomenon it is today
• Never before released in a DVD collection - this is deep in the Funimation vault!
• This release includes the original opening theme song "Rock The Dragon"
• The original Canadian voice cast can only be found on this release

Emulsion, Ath Thanks the responses, now I understand how it works for Blu-ray and wil quit complaining, haha. I actually didn't realise Naruto was 4:3 until I checked just before replying. Thank god everything is widescreen now :D

Ath, I actually found your old post yesterday and was looking at how stretched the picture was. That was what got me checking Naruto. TBH For a long time I haven't even realised I was watching a stretched picture. It won't stop me though coz it really doesn't bother me. Lol!

Where does the OVA fit in the storyline?
Between episodes 10 and 11. It delves into Lucy's past.

Thanks as I have seen it described as more light hearted than the series, well it couldn't be much darker than the show, I thought it might be some kind of alternative reality it was set in as you sometimes get with some OVAs.

Had a little read around and it is described as more light hearted, it fills in some of the background details but otherwise doesn't help to resolve the series ending.

I actually sought the Manga out after watching this series originally to basically find out how it ended

When will FUNimation not find an excuse to rerelease Dragonball Z?
I don't entirely brugdge them for this. This is the same sort of release that Digimon, YuGiOh and Monster Rancher are geting. Namely targeted for people who grew up watching the show in cut form on TV.

Releasing stuff to capitalise on old school fans is a good idea, but you can't help but feel Funi are veering off on to ADV Evangelion levels, that was released so many times on DvD in various versions.

The Tempest plan seems rather ill-timed. I bought the Blue Exorcist DVDs only to be tempted by the BD sets (I'm unwilling to double dip). And then they solicit DVDs for something else I would have preferred to get on BD. Hmm.

I anticipate a drop in sales. Have they been taking announcement advice from a certain UK distributor?

R

I'm not usually one to complain about pricing, but then I'm not used to weirdly backwards ideas like Aniplex releasing Zetsuen no Tempest as DVD only. Zero chance I buy it, even though the show is very good.

Who missed on the bajillion and one releases that the show has had since it was on TV, unlike the other shows you've mentioned?

MVM tweeted that they will be announcing another new license this week:

We'll be revealing yet another new license this week, stay tuned for clues across the week. First to guess will win an MVM prize...

I hope it's Index or Railgun. I did ask Tony about them at MVM and he said he has looked into them, but they're on the back burner for now. I also wouldn't mind Toradora with the OVA.
