I have an older brother, we're very different, and if I'm honest I think he's pretty immature in many ways. Recently he's been mentioned the idea of him becoming a life coach. Now, I don't know much about life coaches, all I know is that they sound ridiculous, but if their remit is to give good advice about life, then I don't think my brother should be one. Because, in my experience, he has a proclivity for giving well meaning but very bad advice. My conscience would impel me to warn anyone I know not to hire him as a life coach. So, what I'm wondering is this: am I obliged to tell him I think he'd make a disastrous 'life coach', because I'd feel terribly mean if did so. And while he can give horrible advice, because he's somewhat charismatic, I can envision him potentially convincing people of his questionable 'wisdom' and making a living out of it. I suppose I should just refrain from encouraging or discouraging and let him get on with his own life.

Decided to take the plunge and book my first driving lesson today for Wednesday. Really nervous! I've never so much as sat in a drivers seat before, so it shall certainly be an experience!

Don't be nervous, you gotta believe:

On a serious note, my first experience with driving lessons started good until it went.. overkill. Within 10 hours of learning I was forced to drive into the city centre during the christmas season by the instructor. The city centre even had one roundabout that's so terribly designed and was always hit by tons of traffic that she felt it was suitable for use. Not to mention I still haven't perfected the basics (like stopping the car or resuming after a give-way point with a handbrake) so I made so many mistakes to the point where the instructor basically shouted at me (in the end I essentially broke into tears due to the pressure and was uncomfortable, and decided to get a new instructor).

My current instructor is much better, as he lets me learn at a much better pace to be able to learn each bit properly (for instance I've gotten used to changing gears when slowing down when I wasn't able to with the previous one). Plus he even gives me theory test papers to help me revise the Theory stuff.

See I was the other way around, I learned on and off for years but never really got confident enough for city driving, roundabouts etc. Being thrown in (I passed my test after a one week intensive driving course) forced me to learn on the go and I finally did. Mostly.

a handbrake
A what now? Those are the shiny things sticking out from the doors, right? I always wondered what those were for.

Sounds like a nightmare, seems like it was a bit early to throw you in the deep end, probably wasn’t a good idea. Glad to hear you’ve got a better instructor now. *thumbs up*

@Vashdaman older brothers make terrible life coaches. What lessons would my eldest brother teach? Let's see - how to game upside down, how to cook the same thing every day and still burn it, fake wrestling that's not supposed to hurt but absolutely does, how to properly wear hobo clothes, or, as there is a middle brother between me and the eldest, how to pick sides to pick on one guy.
My eldest brother actually would rather be writing novels, though he's only said it once and what he reads is either from the author of discworld Steven king or just sounds like awful writing.

Reach for your dreams, kids! Well, some of you

In the front side centre of the car next to the Gear handle is a Handbrake. The handbrake is designed to keep the car stationary so that it doesn't move completely on its own. You mainly use it for stopping a car completely or while waiting a certain amount of time at a traffic jam/give-way/round-about section.

Let’s not forget if you drive with it on then you bugger the car up and are in for some hefty repair bills...

Good luck. One tip - use your indicators all the time, even when no one is around, as it'll become a habit. My no. 1 pet peeve is t***s not using their god damn indicators!

I didn’t start driving on a road until my second lesson and it was going round a Close and then my instructor tricked me by telling me which turns to take until I realised I was driving us back to my house which involved a 40mph limit main road.

Probably should be law that an off road test should be passed before going on the road. The roads nowadays are so congested that they need to have that bit of knowledge/confidence before hitting the road. Our base of operations is close to a test centre and constantly get stuck behind learners driving a 10mph and being slow off the mark when pulling out.

I'm surprised you could get 40 on the roads in your area :p Although my experience of them are mainly weekend and rush hour traffic.
I drove on a dual carriage way on my first lesson! From So'ton to Romsey down to Totton and back. Although this was nearly a quarter of a century ago  So less traffic (or mis-remembering)

@Phobos
Yeah, this is what I'm doing. I heard him talking it over with my mum (who is super encouraging as only a mother can be) this morning though, and I do worry about him. He has been influenced so much by all those capitalistic self help gurus throughout his life, people like Tony Robinson, and that book The Secret. But equally by more 'esoteric mystic' writings that still end up reinforcing neo-liberal capitalistic delusion. It's a real shame, as far from being helpful, I genuinely believe this kind of literature has hindered his emotional development, as it discourages critical reflection at all costs (as that would presumably be a 'negative thought').

I think he harbours dreams of becoming like one of those opportunistic writers I've mentioned above. But I worry about him because, while he does have a level of charisma, he is chasing a complete fantasy, one I don't think he will achieve. He is a good guy though, and I really do worry he won't realise until too late how fake all that stuff is.

Nah you can do it, if I can anybody can! Best of luck to you with it all. Become an excellent driver, like me - no points, no endorsements, but at the expense of ticking off every other road user because you decide to drive "by the book" and not like an ar$3hole!

The irony of imparting my wisdom though is, at this point, although I do drive, I don't own a car XD

Haha, no way XD Are you on the front line delivering first-class service, or are you behind-the-scenes?
I'm behind the scenes, helping make things go seamlessly! ;)

I work early mornings, unloading the deliveries, keeping the sales floors clear and tidy, keeping the till points stocked with all types of carrier bags and... keeping the flow of those all-important hangers moving. :p

I checked, by the way, and it turns out our hangers are no longer provided by Mainetti: it's now some firm called Braiform.

SCANDAL!!!
