Puella Magi Madoka Magica

Okay, this show had a lot of hype, and I can't go anywhere on the internet without seeing a reference to contracting with Kyubey, so I thought I would give this series a go. I have to say, I can definitely see what all the hype is about (which is unusual, as I usually end up hating things that are overhyped).

One thing I love about this show, is that it initially tricks you into thinking that this will be a magical girl show that's all bright and sparkly, like Tokyo Mew Mew. Then episode 3 comes along, and **** starts to get real, and from there, it escalates. One thing I loved about this series, is that for a guy who always tries to be nice to people, this show really hit home. I found myself growing attached to Sayaka and her tragic tale rather quickly, then with the revelation about Kyōko, it was then when I realised that it wasn't an isolated problem - that for every blessing, there is a curse. The whole idea that self-sacrifice is just that - rather than just doing something with no profit for yourself, it is actually a sacrifice. Although to a lesser extent, I do know that feeling.

I feel that this series went a lot deeper than the standard super hero show, where, like soldiers in most war films, they are shown simply as heroes who are willing to do anything to justice without any concern for themselves. However, in Madoka, we see how horrible it actually is to have to place your life on the line, and the ultimate fate that awaits magical girls.

I know this show aired first, but boy did Homura's constantly going through time to try and change things remind me of Okabe and Mayuri in Steins;Gate. I guess this year I'm just getting bored of time travel. I exhausted all my caring for that kind of thing in Steins;Gate, so I wasn't really affected by her story until the final episode.
Also, with the whole thing of a magical girl's body fading away, and especially in the final episode with no one being able to remember Madoka (except Homura), I couldn't help but think of the fate of torches in Shakugan no Shana - I do have to agree with Homura's statement, it's when someone sacrifices themselves or dies, and no one will even remember who they are or that they ever existed that really hits me hard; but in the end, that is a fate we will all have to face some day as well, we will die, and the people who remember us will eventually die as well.

One thing I did love about this series, is that it was impossible to predict. Whenever I watch a show, I always seem to be able to see the end; this was different. Even when a scene was happening, I couldn't predict what would happen in the next. The ultimate example of this was Madoka's wish, and in fact, her choosing to become a magical girl (despite her magical girl attire being prominant in the opening theme and promotional material I thought she wouldn't accept in the very end). Stories of self sacrifice always strike a chord with me, but Madoka choosing to essentially give up her mortal existence and all the things she enjoyed and would enjoy in the physical world to become a god-like figure overlooking everyone...wow. In no time at all, Madoka grew from a young girl who felt she was worth nothing, to be being the most worthwhile being of all.

Kyubey also strikes me as one of the most interesting characters ever. Why? Because due to him lacking emotions, I have no idea if he is actually good or evil. While we humans can view his deception and the ultimate goal of turrning magical girls into witches as evil, from his view point, it's perfectly justifiable (and the way he put it across to Madoka really made it seem that way). It actually took me as long as episode 8 to stop completely agreeing with him; the only time I did before was when Sayaka cried about how she couldn't ask Kyosuke to kiss her even if she wanted with the way her body now was. Kyubey's constantly emotionless face and pursuasive speech is definitely something I will remember for a long time. I'd go so far that in terms of villainy, Kyubey stands side by side with Othello's Iago (Although I contest with a lot of scholars that Iago had a clear motive xD).

During the final episode, I actually cried when Kyosuke played Ave Maria; because that was one of the songs heavily featured at my Nana's funeral, and last week was the second anniversary of her death, so it really hit home. For that reason, this is the first fictional thing I have seen that has made me cry as much as I did.

The only things I have against this series are, firstly, the character designs. While I fully respect and like the fact that the characters dress like typical magical girls, the faces in this series were something I could never gather. Their faces seemed way too wide, and their eyes were so blank. Secondly, it's hard to recommend this series to a friend without them thinking it is a typical magical girl show; I've tried with one person, telling them to just marathon episodes 1-3...hopefully that works; it's for that reason why I'm glad I waited until after the series finished airing to watch this, as I doubt I would have watched beyond episode 1.

I do hope that this series gets an English Blu-Ray release; I imagine the witches in particular would definitely benefit from HD treatment.

Usagi Drop

A very charming comedy drama. Lovable characters (especially Rin and Daikichi), interesting animation style, and clever situation yet still believable given the senario. The ending was somewhat open ended, but I believe a spin-off is being made so the story will continue.

Score: 8 / 10

Dragon Ball Z Movie: Broly – Second Coming
8/10
A MUCH bigger improvement over the first one

Animation: Very good! much better compared to the last one. Much more flued.

Story: Nothing special. Just that Broly is brought back to life.

Music: What is up with funimation putting hard rock and metal music in the DBZ movies? It makes it seem more childish!!!

Dub: same old same old.

just finished watching kanokons and i got to say its was good but not as good as ladies vs butlers, the art styles the same as ladies vs butlers. theres wasn't much of a story. but the fan service wasn't bad but all in all.

Dragonball Z movie: Bio-Broly
5/10
Meh. Not great. Not terrible either

Animation: Not as good as the previous Broly movie, but it was ok.

Story: had a good sci-fi/Horror movie feel to it which is unlike Dragonball Z. So it was nice to see something different for a change. However the story was really slow paced.

Music: No rock music. Thank god!!

Dub: Same old same old.

Dragon Ball Z Movie: Lord Slug
6/10
Pretty average. Only saved due to the animation and OK fight scenes

Animation: Very good animation. fluid and colorful. Plus some decent fight scenes

Story: Same as almost every DBZ movie. I wonder if they thought about doing something different for the story.

music: pretty decent

Dub: Same old as usual

Steins;Gate - 10/10

I mark out pretty hard for time travel stories, and this did so many other things right on top. Really fun characters and relationships, and a surprisingly satisfactory ending.

Steins;Gate - 10/10

Can you say how well it compares to the VN? The only reason I've avoided Steins;Gate is because I'm still hanging on for a translation patch for the game. I badly regretted watching the adaptation of Chaos;Head instead of playing it first. By all accounts, that wasn't nearly such a successful series, but still...

I can't say personally, but from all comments that I've read from people who could, it seems to be a fine adaptation. Nothing like the botch-job that was made of C;H. I've even read comments saying "don't bother playing the VN if you've just watched the anime", and I honestly can't imagine anyone regretting watching this show.

Roll on, Robotics;Notes!

Tiger & Bunny - 6/10

At times clumsy pacing and outright dumb plotting lets down a series that has a strong message, and a charismatic cast of characters and seiyuu. Great production values, although when they're funded by "the most" advertising (Yes, it's the point. No, it doesn't entirely excuse it) you would expect so.

Call it a half-way score, it certainly has the potential to get better in season 2, once it can be viewed as a whole.

Steins;Gate (Review also from the VJ thread) - "I am Mad Scientist, Itssocool, Sonuvabitch"

Looking back now at the series, I wasn't that hooked on the series until the half way mark, the first half introduced us to are characters and fleshed them out enough to make them all likeable, yet I wasn't really looking forward to next episodes until after episode 9, it is then that Steins;Gate really started to get going.

While at first light-hearted and comical as the series went on, it wasn't until episode 12 that the series all sudden went into a state of urgency for Okabe and you can really feel for him with all the pain his going through, such a great main male character that I haven't seen in anime for a while.

It was such an intellengent Sci-Fi anime as well, White Fox really did there research on the VN and themes such as the Large Hadron Collider or references 2chan and internet meme's.

However the more I thought about it, the more I realized that Steins;Gate perhaps won't be my Anime Of The Year but it was very close and will be ranked very high I tell you this.

In conclusion this is the first must watch on Anime On Demand, a Funimation license also may mean a likely UK DVD license as well, you have no excuse to check out Steins;Gate.

Tiger & Bunny

Throughout the series it pretty much reminded me why I love superhero series and why I loved cartoons back when I was a child/teenager such as Batman - The Animated Series or X-men.

Even with the first episode the concept of sponsered hero's and the interesting powers of different super powers was enough for me to watch the series as a whole.

It's thanks to all the heros with there likeability that makes them shines, even giving most there own episodes, (I would of liked Bison to have a bit more character development)

Yes, Tiger & Bunny has alot of cheese, it has many predictable plot points and some characters are left out such as Lunatic around the end of the series.

It's action packed, comical and not to mention great art and voice acting, the first season has been an enjoyable experience. Bring on the second season!!

No.6 -

I feel that I was the only one that watched this BONES project, as one of the noitaminA line-ups, it wasn't the most spectacular.

First No.6 is a bromance anime so some people may be put off by it but it's rarly seen at times, both Rat and Shion may be together for most of the series but it didn't feel that uncomfortable to me.

My big problem was it's confusing take on the bee disease that was affecting the city of No.6 What was it? Did it affect the other five cities? It just didn't add up for me. Shion and Rat arguments would become really irritating as well, they just wouldn't shut up about one plot point. Even for a show that at times is supposed to be dark, I couldn't take it seriously, even breaking some jokes.

However No.6 does do things that avoids it from becoming average, for one the series looks visually impressive and would look awesome on Blu-ray, it's few action scenes are thrilling and is not afraid to show the true activites of the people in a charge this perfect city.

No.6 needed more episodes to try and flesh out it's concept really but it is better than Fractale which a few people are comparing it to, give it a go.

Usagi Drop -

In 2010, Kuragehime was my best Slice-Of-Life show, this year the award will certainly be going to Usagi Drop.

Production I.G really did do a fantastic job with this and it's source material of the manga, the presentation is top notch for the most part as well.

It's most thanks to the chemistry between Daikichi and Rin, it is really heartwarming as the series progresses and you can see the changes in both of them with every obstacle they overcome.

It is another no brainer to watch on Anime On Demand, so go there and watch it.

Highschool of The Dead

I've finally got aroiund to finishing this show, probably my favourite show of the year, ludicrously stylish and amazing characters, and so many references to other works in the Zombie genre (28 Days Later, Resident Evil 2 and even Dawn of The Dead), the ecchi for some reason isn't that annoying, probably because it's not overused like on other shows, and has just the right number of episodes to keep it from not dragging on, definitely can't wait for a 2nd series.

I am watching No.6, Reevo, just so far behind on it like with almost everything else from this season. ;_; I should finish it off, since I actually like Fractale.
