I don't think K-On has the OVAs, at least I can't see it mentioned in Sentai's press release

I haven't seen the press release but if it's anything like the Manga release, the OVA is just counted as an episode rather than a separate extra.

I forgot the extra episodes, I thought it meant the Ura-on and the Live house OVAs...

That's what I meant. I don't think the Manga release had Ura On but it listed Live House as Episode 14 despite it being an OVA. It actually really confused me the first time I watched it as episode 13 seemed like the end and I had no idea 14 was an OVA.

All the releases so far have had the 12 episodes plus the Winter House extra and the Live House OVA according to wiki

What we haven't had are the Ura-On episodes and the Live music compilation episode.

A $140 Persona 4 set? This I have to see...
To add a little note, the Japanese audio has been restored on the BD version (considering that was being mentioned in the overseas cover art thread).

More info on Warners DVD release of Jojos - nine episodes per DVD?!?!

Also, it says subtitles in English and Spanish, but I wonder if that means it's English audio only, or Japanese audio only?

I guess they think it could have mass market appeal and want it to have a budget release right from the start, like anti-AoA people are always clamouring for. They're probably correct that it could become a big seller to more 'casual' fans if they strike it lucky - it's certainly entertaining enough and the games seemed to find a niche in the west - but I hope they'll consider a better release for subsequent seasons now the JP versions have dropped their subtitles.

I'm not going to buy Stardust Crusaders and later adaptations on overly-compressed DVD.

Yeah, I mean in theory I can see why they're doing it - a budget 'mainstream looking' release of the show to appeal to the masses could be great, but if there's not at the very least a bare-bones Blu-Ray equivalent, it's kind of disappointing and will always prompt the 'Oh, but a 'proper' anime company could have done so much more with this' line.

Jojo's is one of those real gateway titles, like Attack on Titan, that has the potential to appeal to so much more than the established anime hardcore, and releases like that are crucial to introducing fresh blood into fandom.

This is one of the things which ticks me off when people attack premium editions. In most cases, the premium editions will lead to a cheap version later and everyone wins (though those who save money have to deal with mild jealousy for a few months or years before being able to buy). When a series goes straight to a cheap edition, there's nothing for the premium crowd to pick up at all. We're just screwed, and because every series is different it's not like we can say "Oh well, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure had a rubbish release but at least I can ease the pain by buying NagiAsu instead and forget that my favourite show is ruined forever.".

Thinking about it, isn't that about average for DVDs? I don't own many DVD sets, I mostly buy on Blu Ray, but most of my DVDs have about that many. For example, the 27 episode Second Season of K-On came on 4 discs and the 51 episode Soul Eater came on 8. My only real point of comparison for these is my Claymore set which is 26 over 6 discs and my Berserk set which is 25 over 6 discs but I can't really tell much difference quality wise between them in terms of compression. The only other DVD set I have is Trigun which, in my opinion, had an excessive amount of discs, 8 for a 26 episode show, which I again, couldn't tell much of a difference.

This was actually the topic of an Answerman discussion once which might be interesting reading if you didn't see it at the time: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/answerm ... -16/.83244

From my own experience it depends heavily on the content and the skill of the US company involved. People used to freak out over 7 episode discs in the past and I've seen some which looked ghastly and others which looked perfectly passable. With JoJo's quirky art style and the fact that my first taste was the (flippin' gorgeous) JP BD release, I'm inclined to think the DVD version would probably fail to meet my expectations even with a more generous use of disc space.

For anime, the sweet spot is seven episodes per disc, any more than that and you start getting compression visible. It's not a lot compared to live action, you can just about get away with four hours of live action on a disc, compared with three hours of animation, but it really does become visibly apparent. Even on those anime discs with seven episodes plus a featurette, or some older Manga authored discs, which repeated an episode instead of sticking the commentary on the appropriate episode gets all pixelly.

Some of Manga/Madman's Dragon Ball discs from last year don't look good, although there's NTSC-PAL plus poor source material issues as well in that title. Of course Warners probably has access to some industrial strength authoring technology, and they might be able to get 9 episodes worth of anime onto one disc without issue.

I'll give that a read, thanks.

I also definitely agree. JoJo is such a vibrant and colourful show and it really needs to be seen in HD. I'm going to buy the DVDs regardless, just to support future JoJo releases and if they ever do release a blu ray, I'll definitely double dip. Well, I would if it got a region B release, I don't have a Region A/Region Free blu ray player personally.

I'm hearing that some folks are already receiving the first volume of Nozomi / RightStuf!'s Turn A Gundam release. Early reports say it's a six disc set, with each DVD in its own case a bit like their excellent Nadesico complete collection. (Okay, that one technically had TWO DVDs to a case, but whatevs.)

Really INSANELY hyped for this! And yet, still hopeful (against my better judgement) that there might be some news regarding a UK release.

That scenario usualy ends with a kneecaped cheap version which is stuck on DVD and the shows native format being locked away in some stupid expensive set filled with crap I did not want or on a non CR / NETFLIX VOD service that will happily charge £30 for the "licence" to the show and not actually tell you what audio formats it has.

And unless CR gets the uncut SC then that's no solution to this particular problem ether.

Collectors Editions need to be that, an edition. Not the only path to Heaven with the option of a third rate Butins available a year later.
