Don't go to pieces! Land of the Lustrous simulwatch (completed)

Episode 4
When is a snail not a snail? When it's an octowaifu.

This episode gives us a clearer sense of the origin of the world's current inhabitants, tells us that even Sensei's power isn't enough to overcome Cinnabar's depression, and my favourite part: Phos's signature 'I give up' pose where she slumps on the floor with her butt in the air.

We also get some indications that the current status quo the gems live in is guided by their lack of human drives. Without fear of loss or death, there's no sense of urgency, which may be why they never bother to fix up their home.

Episode 4

Quite a dialogue-y episode which had me reminding a few times to try and catch everything in Spanish.

I really like that this epsiode takes a bit of a time out to do some world building and give an explanation of sorts for why the world is this way. Some is done visually like with Snail ladies' "partes mas importantes" but a fair amount is simply exposition as the underwater world, initially vibrant, becomes increasingly barren until Phos is once again in peril.

Some of the more interesting musings were about death. So far the series has been very focused on what gives life meaning so it was nice to have another viewpoint. It also serves to really highlight Cinnabars predicament. If you'll live forever but have no purpose and can find no joy are you even really alive at that point. It's almost more like being undead.

I liked the touch of Snail ladies hair being very seaweedy. The show is always gorgeous but the underwater world with its darker blue hues was very beautiful to look at.

Episode 4

A lot of dialogue to take in this episode. The snail was pretty funny. Then it turned into an octopus waifu 🤣. The character designs are really cool, I can't imagine how hard it was to animate stuff like that. Sadly I don't have anything else to add about the story, but I'm excited to see where it goes after.. the ending..

First time viewer! Episode 4!

So the master has been asleep meditating, and the dream centres around the people on the moon.

Originally I guess the snail saying they were the Ruler of the sea people was taken as a joke, but the best way to hide a Tree is in a Forest.

The snail also said that they were taken by the Lunarians for their shells, at first on the assumption that they were just semi-intelligent snails and had no way of fighting back came to mind. The later reveal that when underwater they were a lot more like the gem people makes it more likely that they already lost their fight against the Lunarians.

After the antics in the first half of the episode we get into the crux of things, the ultimate besnail! it seems that our snail ruler was probably nothing more than a trojan snail! Sent behind enemy lines to draw Phos (or any gem maybe) out into the water to be ensnailed in a trap.

Alongside this there is some new information, namely about how the 3 races were once one. I can only imagine that the end-game here is for all of the races, and maybe the moons, to get brought back together again to reform the planet and bring humanity back.

Guess Phos is off to the moon, I would love to see how the moon society works. Who else thinks that Cinnabar will wind up going to the moon to save Phos? Possibly also accompanied by Dia/Bort.

Random things:
  • The snail said they couldn't eat the Master and seemed surprised, the master must be quite different to the rest of the gem people.
  • The sea is offlimits as deemed by the master, but Phos is curious, and the master has never explained why the sea is off limits. If somewhere is off limits there is usually a hidden reason for it.
  • Lunarians seems to be more desperate than usual. The gems live a long time, and made a comment that seeing them twice in one day was unheard of, even after living for over 2000 years.

Today's episode got me thinking about one of the most enjoyable things about starting a well-crafted anime for the first time, and that's learning about the lore of a new fictional world and getting immersed in the setting. Whether it be Evangelion, Madoka Magica or Serial Experiments Lain, each universe has its own laws and its characters their own concerns that arise out of that, and learning about the mythology of Land of the Lustrous in episode 4 was a joy. The origin story of the gems, Ventricosus' people and the Lunarians was captivating stuff and definitely has me invested now.

The episode ending on a heartbreaking note with Phos having been utterly played by her erstwhile pet has me eager to see what happens next. I'm enjoying this.

The way I'm doing it is watching the episode a night before (just seen episode 4). This also gives me time to sleep on it.

I like to keep things fresh in my mind a bit, so my workflow is:
  1. Watch the episode same day, usually sometime in the afternoon.
  2. Around dinner time, I'll write up some thoughts and post them.
  3. A bit later I'll pop back in and read what other people have said before me/after me, give some thumbs up 👍 and then see if I can get some more replies in based on what other people said! :)
I'm eager to watch the next episode, and see if we'll learn more about the lunarians and whoever is up there with them.

I am also looking forward to Phos going to the moon. I wonder if we'll find out what's happening on all 6 moons.

With the Lunarians's being made up of the Soul we are teased that their motivation might be to do with greed. Personally I predict that the Lunarians motivation will turn out to be that they want to be rejoined into human beings.

I had the same impression, I really believe that the series will end working towards that goal, if not achieving it in this season.

It's explored in various mediums, but I really find the very thought of living forever without meaning to be depressing to me. I think I've only seen one or two anime that really explore "living forever" as a concept outside of this, the one which springs to mind is Rin: Daughters of Mnemosyne which shows the MC dealing with outliving everyone around them (warning: quite edgy and pretty ecchi to boot).

Further, that a lot of what the gems do can be considered busy work, which doesn't accomplish much

Real life example; I think I am pretty good at what I do for my job, but what I do will inevitably not change much for the world around me as a whole, I am not out saving lives, or inventing things that help people etc. I am just trading time for money so I can watch anime or play games or whatever I want to do in my free time.

I feel like the gem people society is built on remaining static, they have developed weapons but not armour, they have to take care of things, even simple wooden bowls, because they aren't able to replace them easily.

I absolutely love this in every medium I consume, whether it's anime or not. I don't think Attack on Titan is my favourite anime, but the world building and mystery in it is amazing, trying to work out the why of things. I especially enjoy it if new details are revealed that go towards answering the questions.

My most recent watch that scratched this itch was probably From the New World (Shinsekai Yori).

Episode 4 - History lesson with snail lady, and she understands what it is important, boobs.

Also like an idiot, I forgot I bought the concept art book..

☝️😂
So is this. Look!

🤣

Veery good, Lordhippos, veryyyy good. The ultimate besnail, too!

Thanks guys! 😆

Didn't had time yesterday, so just watched two episodes and read through all the posts 😵. Will definitely try to keep up from now on.

Episode 3
Snail is taken down and Phos is nowhere to be found. Seeing them just stand underwater as if they were on land was quite an interesting sight. Although to be expected, it doesn't seem that they need to breathe.

While I liked the episode, I was a bit disappointed in it. The green fragments on the shell were quite apparent and I fully expected the small snail to not actually be Phos. With how long it continued on and how the snail was reacting to others mentioning Phos' name, I was starting to doubt whether perhaps the body and conscious of Phos got split. But when Cinnabar encountered Diamond I was again convinced it wasn't Phos at all.

Anyway, it was quite nice to have a bit more focus on Diamond. She really seems to project her own troubles on others. I also felt that when Cinnabar was talking about Phos in a negative way, she took it personally as well. Not on behalf of Phos, but because she views herself as useless and always "relying" on others. Granted in Diamond's case it's more that Bort forces Diamond to rely on her, but still.

Luckily this is resolved, and after a jaw dropping scene where Dia rushes home, we see that none other than Bort is waiting for her. Perhaps I'm reading a bit too much into it, but it really seemed that Bort didn't really know how to react. Bort clearly cares about Dia, and it felt like Bort was going to react with "how could you be so reckless?!", but decided against it after seeing how happy Dia was by finding a solution to bring back Phos.

Small detail, it seemed that while most of the gems were "sleeping", they were all very quick to respond in the middle of the night. I assume that they don't actually sleep (or meditate 😜). But on other occasions they do seem to get tired, so not entirely sure how that works.

Episode 4
First thing I wrote down was that it's 100% confirmed that the master isn't a rock, since the snail couldn't "eat him". While I don't think anyone would believe he was, I do sort of wonder how the gems view him? The way he deliberately words it as "meditating" despite being "sleeping", seems to indicate he keeps something hidden from them.

The episode did tread a little bit in the subject of mortality, but ultimately doesn't do a lot with it. The common argument of "death gives meaning to live" was also outed by the snail.

I'm not sure what to think about the transformation of the snail into a more humanoid form and the whole origin story. It felt a bit clumsily done. Making a joke about it being her truer truest form, doesn't suddenly make it okay. Honestly, it would've been better if the snail was already a bit humanoid, perhaps more fetus shaped. In fact, I wouldn't even mind one of the three parts to not have a humanoid form at all. If anything, the Flesh part seems most likely to change shape over time. Anyway, the division into three parts, is probably also not the whole story.

I'm actually quite surprised I didn't really see that ending coming. Obviously something was going to happen when the main character goes to an "off limits" area, but I didn't really suspect the snail at all. That despite me thinking after episode 2 that there must be some reason why the Lunarians dropped it in the first place. In hindsight it's so obvious.

Anyway, this just makes the master a more and more mysterious figure. Something tells me he is somehow still human(?) or at least has all three components: Soul, Flesh and Bones. He probably also knew that the snail was in a way similar to the gems, hence him welcoming the snail. Still no explanation of how he could easily obliterate the Lunarians or his long lifespan.

If she is the ruler of the sea people maybe it's just in her power to change form, she has been (so far) a giant snail, a small snail, and now octowaifu.

If her powers mirror the other rulers somewhat, she may be able to do things others can't as well, much like how the master has special powers.

My take on her form changing anyway! :)

LOL, no I definitely didn't mention Ex-arm on that list of recommendations. I'm not that sadistic.
Hahahaha, oh dear, I'm racking my brains to see where on earth that came into my head from (I'm going with subliminal messaging from crunchyroll as it's way too specific, and coincidentally CGI, for it to just have been my imagination...).
I can sort of understand why the others are mean to Pho. From all we have seen the only purpose to the existence of the gems is to survive by either fighting off their attackers or repairing the damage. Pho is not able to fight and is too clumsy to do the repairs. Also the enemies are constantly drawn to attack Pho due to their appearance which puts the others in danger.

It's like if you were living in a zombie apocalypse and one in your group has a massive agro range to the zombies and constantly draws them putting everyone else in danger, but is themselves unable to fight. I imagine in that sort of situation the other survivors would want to kick that person out of the group for their own safety.
Yup totally agree on those points but I guess I should've qualified my statement in that in my opinion there can always be a place/purpose for every individual & personality type in society, should they choose to integrate, and even in times of war, all sorts of skills are required for the community to survive, including entertainment, nourishment, etc. Even if Phos provides the light relief (at present) I thought it was a tad bit mean for no one to care. But a time and a place for everything and yes if one is a liability for survival on the battlefield then should be kindly and, if need be, forcefully made to step aside for the greatest good. And likewise if one is a toxic or destructive influence in general I guess.
You'd be correct. (Man, I should go back and beat that game.)
If you haven't finished it then I would definitely recommend it (I want to go back when I have the time and play it again just for that ending section); being a fan of the final fantasy series I had it at about 6/10 until the last part following which it went up to 8/10 for me.
Exactly, that's how it was for me as well, even though I liked it from the start that's the thing that I remember most fondly. Life was easier back then and I had time to just plow through the game and collect everything and fight all the bosses. I'm getting some really nice flashbacks from this 😄
Heheh yes exactly, me too, simpler times...

That really looks beautiful - any chance you could share more best ofs from there? I've been impressed with the concept art so far and was reminded by this of the amazing skill of these philanthropist animators- I always feel a lot of their works really should be displayed in art galleries and sell for big bucks compared to the pittance they are reportedly paid for their labours of love. Well, an uncle of mine always said the artist only gets fame posthumously (& their progeny, if they had any, the fortune)....
My most recent watch that scratched this itch was probably From the New World (Shinsekai Yori).
Funny that, I was getting some Shinsekai Yori vibes watching this as well!

You (and I!) just want one for the amazing anime collection you have envisioned!

Episode 4

Ah, everyone has already nicely covered everything I took away from the episode (also really loving reading everyone's thoughts, whoever cane up with this whole simulcasting idea first is a genius) and all I've done is gone off on a tangent of rambling... And will continue for a bit still! I also enjoyed the lore a lot here and my suspicions of the gems being a form of Humanity's post apocalyptic evolution from episode 2's exposition were confirmed but interesting to see the bits I totally missed in the other species also being mentioned (I think). Still interesting take on immortality and the stagnation/lack of gem evolution maybe partly due to that but also due to drive and ambition being the reserve of the lunarians. Still fascinating stuff and I'm setting myself up for a lot angst knowing this season will only be part of the overarching story.

In fact, I wouldn't even mind one of the three parts to not have a humanoid form at all.
But, but.... we must have octowaifu!!

Episode 5 - The Snail strikes back

Honestly I don't think I have any big take away from today. If this is a standard Hero's Journey for Phos then we have crossed the Threshold and entering the realm of adventure stage.

Octowaifu's Onii-chan saves Phos from the Lunarians, that was nice of him. Though the Lunarians were never really going to give Octowaifu what she wanted anyway as was made painfully obvious by their actions. The betrayal of Octowaifu seems to have been the straw that broke the camels back however as Phos spends the episode in a complete state of apathy, she has seemingly given up on her existance even offering to let the Luminarians take her before Onii-chan decided to help anyway.

Cinnabar is officially Tsundere now, and Phos transforms into Phos-agate as they had to mix minerals to replace her legs which has seemingly given her super speed. To keep up with the theme of human biology the agate which was in the shell reminds me of bone marrow in a way.

Episode 5

This episode really makes me hate the Lunarians. Double crossing, violent and considering they a supposedly the soul of humanity are pretty soulless beings.

It seems, at this stage anyway, that the sea people have the passion and love of humanity. Snail lady was driven by the desire to free her brother afterall and eventually she and her brother show compassion for Phos and take them home. With them being the only ones who reproduce it makes sense as an analogy.

As has been mentioned by others the Lunarians seem to have the greed and ruthlessness of humanity. The selfishness to plunder, conquer and enslave. It's a pretty bleak view of humanity that this is what our souls comprise of; all the worst elements of our personalities distilled into an emotionless cloud of violence. But humanities past, present and presumably future is full of violence so it had to be represented somewhere I suppose.

And then we have the Gems, the undying bones. The skeleton that all the rest is to be hung on to create a person. The scaffold that allows us to move and go and make something of ourselves. Of course they are obsessed with role. A skeletons entire being is function. Each part evolved toward to our ability to survive and then grow as a person. We dont need to be static and we can change for the better. Phos certainly is changing. I wonder where they're headed?

Episode 5 in which we learn this is actually a battle shounen and Phos gets the first power-up

Visually stunning, more than usual. All the shots at sea with the setting sun were splendid, starting with the shot of Phos getting fished out of sea, them falling through the dissolving lunar clouds and then Phos appearing behind Cinnabar. Very striking. The snail's brother, Cat's (as my daughter referred to his snail form after having caught a glimpse of the TV) design complements her own design very well.

This episode made the master more endearing in my eyes. I'm still not ok with the series constantly brutalizing these characters but they all take it in stride, so who am I to say anything. I liked his show of affection and worry towards Phos and assume he isn't usually angry, otherwise the whole structure wouldn't exist anymore. I also liked the shot of him holding Bort, it says a bit more about him and I liked that.

The more I think about the small unspoken details like gems getting tired or having vocal chords when they're... all stone, the more bothered I am. I'm usually not too picky about explanations, but it's kind of getting to me here. Wonder if we'll hear something about it later on.

Yeah, so Phos is now Green Flash and I'm excited for that, even if a power-up is the last thing I expected given the vibe of the series. Maybe it'll make the search for Cinnabar's job faster eh?

I'm guessing the missing memories thing will also rear its head in more significant ways later on as in this episode it was more of a "wink wink don't forget about this wink wink".

I was going to say that next episode appears to be filled with action, based on the preview, but so did this one and it was all over by minute 3 of the episode, so who knows.
