Don't go to pieces! Land of the Lustrous simulwatch (completed)

I was kind of working on the assumption that Phos wasn't gone materially, but my biggest worry was that she was melted into fine essence and sitting in that body of water where the snail/shell fell. If you grind a gem person into dust can they still be recovered? fragments seem to be recoverable.

Yeah to be honest I cant remember how pulled into the mystery I was the first time I watched it. Probably because I've seen it before some part of my brain remembered that Phos was in the shell so when we see the green bits on the shell at the start I knew she was there.

Better late than never 😂
Heheh it's never too late! I couldn't resist adding my thoughts to the Evangelion and Gunbuster threads years after they'd happened (and everyone was too kind to object heheh).
Final Fantasy XIII vibes, especially from the area called "the plains"
If I remember correctly that's near the end isn't it? I loved that part of the game, until then I'd been unimpressed with its linear nature but with that and the revelations of the backstory around then, my estimation of the game really went up.

Loving everyone's thoughts on Episode 3 and seeing all the aspects covered, I'll just bounce my thoughts off some:
Episode 2 - Diamonds are a girl's best friend (but Bort is better)

I remembered a bit of information I read about this series the first time I watched, while using 3D animation, it does use 2D animation as well, like for the close up on facial expressions and some F/X animation (like the water splashing in this episode). After the series is done, I would recommend reading the production notes on Sakura Blog or watching The Canipa Effect's video breaking down the animation. Just ask if you need links, I'll post them on the next episode post.
Heheh ...Bort is better... love it! Interesting about the use of 2D for facial animations and may be why they don't seem as wooden; I'm guessing it's easier said than done otherwise why don't all others do that with 3DCGI? Also going on what Dai mentioned about good examples of CGI
- I've got Expelled from Paradise but don't know about Ex-arm, though I see it's on crunchyroll but is it worth a watch?

I thought that as well, I'm sure one of the exchanges between Phos and Diamond in the previous episode seemed a bit catty.
Yeah that's how read into it as well but very glad to see she turned out to be a darling, not the arrogant/self-obsessed but ultimately shallow type of rival character. Especially given what Vincentdante said about the tropes being matched to respective gem properties & the fact that the classical diamond may be hard but is brittle.
This series reminds me of Casshern Sins in
Aaarrrggh stop reading, stop reading - I really want to watch Casshern Sins and now I can for free on funimation with ads!

Still, loving this. It's a very elegant show, even in regards to the fights. They are well animated, no-nonsense, elegant and fast. The music is simply stunning.
I was reminded of the exhilarating action from Attack on Titan when Dia was taking on Snail-kun.
Its interesting how little most of them care that the Phos they knew might be gone but then all come together to help once a viable solution to the problem is found.
I'm loving the psychology and internal turmoil of the characters in this series, only 3 episodes in and I think it's brilliant and can totally see why some have rewatched it numerous times. Poor Phos, why is everyone so mean about them? Phos brings so much energy and hilarity to the party, why so serious all the time guys? Why is it that only Dia seems to care about poor Phos? Oh well, seeing as how these things go Phos will surely be disproving all the naysayers by the end.
point out that scene where Dia runs back home in the moonlight. It's just stunning, isn't it?
That was brilliant and also when her light is seen in the distance by Cinnabar on their approach.
Eventually they figure out that Phos's body was used to repair the snails shell so they fish it out and put her back together.
Something else to learn about molluscs' biology.
If Phos can learn to talk to the snail, maybe Phos can also talk to other creatures? Possibly even the Lunarians.
Absolutely and I wonder & hope the show uses the element of communication and understanding to address the instinctively inherent fear of the "other" most living beings possess.

Concerning Casshern Sins, get on that scheise stat, it's memorable, deliciously retro while modern at the same time and deeply melancholic, which is one of the biggest qualities an anime can have as far as I'm concerned.

It's an overall accomplished, strong production. Visuals and sound are top of the shelf. It was a huge surprise but not because I had no expectations going into it, considering I have rewatched it a few times and it's always very satisfying. It's just quality stuff.

@Geriatric hedgehog ex-arm only looks good if you want to see a terrible show with bad cgi. I've seen some YouTube clips, and it's just... bad. Real bad.
Ouch, maybe I misread but I thought Dai gave ehat as an example of good CGI! Well, I'll use my time to watch something else then.

Heheh yeah I was pretty sold on that already but that's a ringing endorsement alright and ticks all the right boxes for me. Looks like I might as well try and bypass my watch first/but later rule (which seems to happen more often than not these days) and try and get myself a hard copy of this.

I can sort of understand why the others are mean to Pho. From all we have seen the only purpose to the existence of the gems is to survive by either fighting off their attackers or repairing the damage. Pho is not able to fight and is too clumsy to do the repairs. Also the enemies are constantly drawn to attack Pho due to their appearance which puts the others in danger.

It's like if you were living in a zombie apocalypse and one in your group has a massive agro range to the zombies and constantly draws them putting everyone else in danger, but is themselves unable to fight. I imagine in that sort of situation the other survivors would want to kick that person out of the group for their own safety.

Episode 3 in which Phos almost lives the Bloodborne secret-ending dream and Bort needs to take a goddamn chill-cola. seriously, chill Bort.

(yes, only now)

So, reading everyone's posts makes the appeal of a simulwatch apparent: it simply makes for a much richer viewing experience, with multiple viewpoints and interpretations. It's really cool and I'm happy to be a part of this simulwatch and this community! Here's to more!

On the other hand, again, I curse you all for saying all the interesting stuff and the simulwatch concept itself because it will be hard in the future to not go straight into the next episode after some hype cliffhanger (side-eyeing @Neil.T here with the planned Lagann simulwatch)!

We have our first seemingly romantic pairings with Cinnabar and Phos and the two diamonds (Bort does fancy Dia, at least). That was cute. It was also cute that I kinda missed Phos' antics throughout the episode, which may have been intentional to mirror at least Dia's feelings.

Loved the storyboarding in a select few scenes, namely the conclusion to the fight at the beginning and Diamond rushing to Phos, which Neil already mentioned. Sublime depiction of movement and just great animation in general.

So yeah, this further cements this series firmly with Phos at its center. How others view them, what this will change in them, that the others will rally to their help... It's a familiar setup but I'm interested in its evolution.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'll just cheat my way into the fourth episode and prepare a write-up for midnight GMT+1 because otherwise I would have to wait 24 hours to watch it.

I hear ya, man. 😏🤜

(Episode #08 especially, right?)

Yup. Definitely. It adds so much, and I'm really learning a lot.

Like @Professor Irony already said before, it's great to have so many people here for this one.

Episode 3! Not much too add from me here, given that quite a lot of you folk have already done so.

I will say that the animation is absolutely beautiful. I set my bar pretty low due to hearing stories of other CGI anime, but this one is really done differently. The world just feels so pretty.
I found the weird creature thing that Diamond thought was Phos to be quite cute. But it was good to see Phos returning to life at the end.

Thanks again for the information everyone is sharing in this thread, it's really interesting to read.

You'd be correct. (Man, I should go back and beat that game.)

Episode 4 where all gems gangsta until a snail takes you to the bottom of the sea

Things got very interesting here. The myth of creation described by the snail recontextualizes things quite a bit, and also makes the fact that the lunarians assume a form that is tied to human spirituality even easier to understand.

It was sweet seeing Phos forming an idea of what mortality is and what it means. One of the easiest things to relate to because I think everyone struggles or comes to terms with it eventually in their lives. And it spoke to my core that the master tried to convince Cinnabar that simply living is enough, because I am of the same opinion and there's no worse feeling than feeling you're useless.

Speaking of the master, he gives us yet another glimpse of his power, which would probably easily destroy everything around him, seeing his own reaction to the dream. The question is: why is someone so dangerous to those around him placed right in their midst? And does the dream mean he's the real target of the lunarians? What does that make of him?

Interesting mysteries are now formed and I hope there are some answers, because being only a 13 episode series to a manga that is on hiatus (from what I've read here) is painful. Berserk, HxH and Vagabond are more than enough for the hiatus club.

The ending of the episode was a surprise and well handled in execution. Certainly worked on me. As for the snail, I could do without the gratuitous jiggle buuut this is anime, so my bad.

I'm eager to watch the next episode, and see if we'll learn more about the lunarians and whoever is up there with them.

And now it's back to playing the catch-up game!

Shipping the gems already? I like your style. 😆
You know it! What can I say, I need my love cruise boats! 🛳

Episode 4 - A new mope

Phos really can't catch a break, but perhapes she should have focused on that encylopedia after all.

So today we learned a bit about the civilizations of this world, or rather how they evolved out of humans. It is implied that the gem people are mad out of human bones, I guess this is also related to the prologue of the previous episode which describes a race which emerged on this new world after sinking into the depths. Basically like real life gemstones which are made out of dinosaur fossils, these people are made up of us.

We also find out the Lunarians being based on the Soul assuming this information can be taken as reliable. And further if Snail-chan's race is made up of the flesh it would make a lot of sense from a physiological perspecive that they would display more gendered features like snail-chan's boobs.

With the Lunarians's being made up of the Soul we are teased that their motivation might be to do with greed. Personally I predict that the Lunarians motivation will turn out to be that they want to be rejoined into human beings. Also something of note looking back to episode 2-3 when Phos was eaten and turned into the snail shell, that incident can now be taken as an alegory of the flesh absorbing the bone. Or rather a skeleton under our skin.

With Phos now being captured by the Lunarians, unless something happens to save her perhapes we will start seeing more about their culture.

Exactly, that's how it was for me as well, even though I liked it from the start that's the thing that I remember most fondly. Life was easier back then and I had time to just plow through the game and collect everything and fight all the bosses. I'm getting some really nice flashbacks from this 😄
