Beez Entertainment Discussion

I keep saying it - I'm honestly baffled as to why some of these Gundam shows haven't surfaced in the West yet.

Two things spring to mind: One is that a complete release of all the UC calendar stuff really ought to be in place. It's the mainstay and original Gundam continuity, it's popular with Gundam fans, and it'd represent a healthy, sizeable bunch of titles for completist fans to pick up.

The other is that stand-alone efforts like Turn A really ought to present a pretty safe bet when it comes to pulling the casual fans. Turn A, I believe, is set in an isolated continuity, with no other pesky offshoots that need to be picked up to get its full flavour. Plus, it's unique among Gundam shows and, er, mecha designs by Syd Mead?

Bottom line, if Beez or anyone gave us Turn A in the West, I'd actually SHUT UP about Gundam for a while. Yes. Really!

Because mech shows aren't popular in general, and stuff that looks "old" isn't popular in general.

Hmm. I dunno about that. I'm well aware that the market for older anime is considered a bit risky, but mecha shows aren't popular?

I think in the case of Gundam, it's a standout show. I've spoken to folks who have never SEEN any Gundam, and yet it catches their interest. I'm sure if more Gundam was available to buy here, those type of folks would buy it.

There seems to be some awareness among even casual anime fans that, yes, while there are some pretty dire mecha shows out there (You can keep yer Gravions and Aquarions, thank you!) Gundam is one of the shows that pretty consistently delivers the goods.

Yay verily, I shall spread its gospel! :)

Mech shows in general aren't popular, no. The "big" Gundam series of the time sells fairly well, and remember that in past times this has included a TV run, but especially legacy titles just don't sell well.

The key may be the ever-increasing difference between the "I'm interested in that, I'll watch it for free" and "I'm interested in that, I'll actually buy it" crowd.

Surprises me. I'd have thought with shows like NGE and Robotech being so popular, this might have changed the playing field. It does strike me as odd that so many mecha shows get licensed if there's a comparatively low number of folks buying them.

This is a really good point. It reinforces my idea that streaming isn't a great idea if distributors actually want to SELL more anime. I'll be the first to admit it's not a practice I really understand, but I've always felt it was a bit bizarre that some folks in the industry are saying 'oh, anime is having a tough time - here, have a whole series or 12 for free!'

These complex workings... I don't understand them...

lol, I don't really, either - I would have thought that big robots blowing stuff up would sell, but for whatever reason people just don't shell out the money for it.

Ah, vive la differance, I say! And that's me speaking as somebody who never cared for pirates or vampires ;)

On the whole mecha thing, I'll say this - there's some astonishingly bad mecha shows out there. No doubt about it.

*koff!* Gravion! *koff!*

I don't get the whole 'writing a genre off' thing. There's good and bad everywhere. Zombies can be lame, but they can also be suspenseful and hilarious. The same for comedies. Pirates, samurai, mecha... anything.

Eva I wouldn't class as a mech show. FMP is like the American high school sit-com version of Gundam, so I guess you must be missing the humor aspect of it.

See, this is what's interesting to me about the whole mecha thing. Those crazy mechs are like cockroaches - they get EVERYWHERE! It's the exceptional series lately for me when there ISN'T a giant robot involved somewhere down the line.

And like Jayme says, there's a wild variation in quality within every genre. Some of it's good, some of it's bad, some of it is just an acquired taste.

It's like me - I can't get enough Gundam. Even the weaker shows are fun for me. But I was pretty lukewarm to Full Metal Panic. I didn't think it was bad, just... a bit 'bleh'.

HdE, did you see the second and third series' of FMP? I thought it was pretty meh and I imagine most people did until they saw FUMOFFU and The Second Raid. The quality soars so high its amazing. Makes you even look back and think the first season was amazing. Then again, you might have seen them and just not enjoyed them.

There is that, but The Second Raid is as dark and intense as some of the Gundam I've seen.

Generally I need more in my mecha anime than just lumps of metal beating the crap out of each other. Shows like Gundam, Evangelion, RahXephon, and FMP provide that.

FUMOFFU is on my pile of things to watch (I got it cheap before Xmas, and figured I'd grab it with the first FMP)

The Second Raid is on my list of stuff to 'get around to', as I've heard some good things about it.

I'd reiterate that I didn't hate FMP - I just felt it wasn't as amazing as I'd been led to believe. It was fun enough, I just didn't feel the earth move or anything.

And FabricatedLunatic - that's a short list of some truly excellent shows (my comments on FMP aside). RahXephon blew my mind- it's brilliant, brilliant stuff!

Crazy thing about Gundam, though is that big robots beating the scrap out of each other is precisely why I like it! Those shows generally deliver on all fronts, in my opinion.

Totally agree with the previous comment, FMP is decent though not fantastic, like it's not sure if it's trying to be a comedy or serious mecha show, but Fumoffu is awesome and so far TSR is equally brilliant.
