UK Anime Distributor Anime Limited Discussion Thread

I get the feeling a lot of anime fandom on Facebook Twitter is comprised of insta-react 'casuals' at times, that are used to paying only for their cheap as chips Naruto releases. I understand that stuff like this is a little pricier, but at least in Anime Ltd's case the extra cost is justified, as opposed to Manga's original SAO release that was just bare-bones, but a similar cost for the BRs.

Shamelessly stolen from blu-ray,com forums, all credit goes to forum member there called Javac, thanks for the hard work guy, this post is awesome (if you see this :) )

So with MCM Comic Con going on right now in the UK, I thought that I'd post some of the updates that we've got out of there so far. I'll update as more comes out I guess if people find that helpful. These updates are from today's Anime Limited panel and come from ukanime

Anime Limited:
  1. New Licenses:
    • Sword Art Online II - DVD/BD, Four Parts. Volume 1, August 2015.
    • Fusé: Memoirs Of A Huntress - DVD/BD, August 2015.
    • Hint at Durarara!! X2 announcement over the weekend.
  2. Updates:
    • Baccano: A weird technicality with assets has caused the delay, it should be resolved soon. Should be released before the October 2015 London Comic Con.
    • Samurai Flamenco: Will be out for the first half at least.
    • Full Metal Panic Ultimate Edition: Aiming for a release date before or around October's London Comic Con.
    • Tokyo Ghoul:Entirely uncut.
  3. Miscellaneous:
    • Thoughts on picking up shows with "questionable content" in UK? It's down to what BBFC rating it'll get, as long as it gets an 18 it's fine.
    • The forthcoming Prison School may be difficult - other territories may not pick it up due to concerns about not being able to TV broadcast.
    • It's easier to choose whether to pick up something when it's based on an existing manga, as that can be used to gauge interest and quality.
    • Andrew Partridge shares his personal enjoyment of Death Parade (available streaming on Viewster). Andrew would love to do something with it!
    • Andrew would love to see Blood Blockade Battlefront streamed in the UK too, but nothing to report there either.

(The Collector's Edition of SAO II will include a 56-page booklet with original content as well as content from the Japanese release.)

Why does Andrew have such good taste in anime? You can really feel it in their acquisitions too, rather than the usual haphazard selection of whatever bundles were going cheap at the last licensing event which other companies (in the US too) seem to go for.

I'll probably pass on SAOII, but that set looks really nice. If it turns up in a sale, I might get it.

Really interested in everything else. That Dandy box looks amazing. Can't wait for the day my copy is in my hands. :D

"The forthcoming Prison School may be difficult - other territories may not pick it up due to concerns about not being able to TV broadcast."

Can anyone shed some light on this? I don't understand how the "potentially not being able to TV broadcast" could stop companies from acquiring the license? Especially considering it's one of the bigger titles coming out of Summer 2015.

Yeah 2015 is looking great for Anime Limited releases, i am gagging for Samurai Flamenco for some reason, I know it didn't go down too well, but it was announced at the same time as Kill La Kill and i've wanted to watch it for so long, so can't wait for it's release this year!

@Danielle content may be a bit too extreme/lewd for broadcasting?? I'll look in to the show now.

Flamenco is amazing, people just don't yet realize that deep down they loved the wild ride of insanity.

Thanks man. I've heard its very .. ecchi, hope what you find doesn't scar you.

Sao, good taste...XD
It is a popular series with people willing to pay for it though. If it gets AL money to release more awesome shows then I don't mind!

Prison School is a really lewd series. I'm guessing no one wants to try and release it here, since there's no chance of it being on TV without heavy censors.

I've ready the manga and some things really come close to the line lol.

I think Javac is qaiz on this board if I'm not mistaken.

Oooh, savvy licenses!

SAO II, while it holds zero interest for me, is the sort of thing I can see being a really, really good seller for Anime Limited. A collector's edition release like this makes perfect sense.

I also share the dismay at some of the Facebook comments. It seems like you can't have a discussion about Sword Art Online without price point coming up, and as much as I think there's always a place for that, some of the logic used there seems silly.

Rui nails my thoughts precisely with her commentabout criticising a better deal. Insane.

I'm also personally curious about Fuse - it's not a film I was aware of before this announcement.

Yeah multi part release for sure. 3 volumes is likely I'd say, one per cour.

Im of the thought that aniplex won't want 12 episodes per set as per every other show atm. Kill la kill, sword art online, monogatari etc.

It will be 3 or 6 I'm sure. No sense in having different cours in the same set.

6 seems excessive to me but I guess it wouldn't overly surprise me.

I'd imagine there's some room for negotiation - AL managed to agree fewer KLK volumes for example.

A nice quick license announcement before I've had a chance to place a preorder elsewhere for a competitor. I enjoy Durarara!! so I look forward to hearing more when they're ready with the details :D

Even with it being a split three-cour series, I think a six volume release for Durarara!! x2 would be a hard sell in the UK; especially considering that Anime Limited were able to release the first season as a complete collection. There are of course many different variables between the two series', such as age and previous releases, but I'm doubtful about whether the non-message board prowling audience will care much for those reasons (You can just see the "I bought season one complete, so why do I have to buy SIX season two volumes?!" comments on Facebook).

I think a release pattern of one volume per cour would be ideal but I doubt that would receive the approval of Aniplex. I think a strong case could be made for splitting the season into four volumes though (which would contain approximately 9-10 episodes each, by my estimation?).

You'd have to go 3 or 6 IMO. Having cours split over releases is likely just going to confuse the hell out of people, especially the more casual viewers. I'd imagine Aniplex will have wanted 6, but hopefully AL argued for 3. Be interesting to see how that plays out.
