UK Anime Distributor Anime Limited Discussion Thread

True, I will probably import the 0079 movie Blu rays

I believe the implication of Andrew's post was that a UK release was coming, so I'd wait. I don't think they got BDs in the US, so maybe this bodes well for Turn A?

I wouldn't usually be interested in complication films but considering the Gundam films have some differences from the series i'd get them if AL released them, ideally on blu-ray if possible.

None of the compilation films have a Blu-ray release with the exception for the upcoming 0083 film (which is part of UC timeline).

I recall the reason it being DVD only was initially because it was subtitle only (there was an English dub produced but Tomino hated it).

So if Andrew can get access to it for the UK then that would be great. Though the chances are slim. Turn A has a better chance though, given how more subtitle only titles are cropping up for Blu-ray on RS's end.

Did they use the SD masters for Turn A?

I can't say with any certainty, but word at the time was that Turn A had been sourced from the SD masters and not the shiny HD version Sunrise has. So even if they can't clear BD, if they can get the HD remaster, it'll be worth the wait.

I would say so. I have the Nozomi Turn A sets and the picture quality leaves a lot to be desired, very soft and blurry on my plasma(which is bad as plasmas handle sd content far better than lcd sets) . Wouldn't surprise me if they used the old Bandai US masters that were unreleased, being a 12 disc set would've been right for Bandai.

Thinking about it logically, AL has already committed to releasing a BD in France, so they're presumably already paying for a new master to be made. Sunrise will have an official English subtitle track that they want to be used, is it going to be that much more expensive to add the pre-approved English subs, alter the menus menus, put the BBFC certificate on the disc and share between countries?

I think the big problem would be convincing Sunrise to let the UK have a title on blu-ray the US isn't. Though, if they're keeping "the West" consistent how does allowing titles on BD in France but not the UK or US fit into that?

So Anime Limited are releasing Mobile Suit Gundam: The Movie Trilogy in France on Blu-ray.

Please can we get the movie on Blu-ray here in the UK? Thank you.

No. Because I love releasing on one territory and not the other! Alternatively sure thing ;).

AP

Ok thanks for the response. I look forward to seeing the movies released here in the UK in some capacity.

It could be the case that the US DVD release of the Gundam Movies sold quite well and that has made the case for a Blu-ray release becoming possible. I suppose that could be an advantage, of sorts, to the delayed release schedule here.

Do we think there's an audience for the movie trilogy less than a year after the series was released on BR? I pre-ordered the series and haven't gotten around to watching it yet so don't plan to buy the movies. I understand that the film are meant to be a better retelling of the story, but I'm not rebuying it so soon. Maybe further down the line once they've released some different Gundam shows on BR, I may be willing to revisit it.
I think it's a difficult one really, if they wait and release it much later then the interest in Gundam may have faded away. At the moment, people are probably more willing to take a chance on Gundam because it's being talked about a lot and people are both aware and curious. I think now might be a good time for releasing the parts of the franchise that people might normally tend to overlook and I'd say the movie trilogy probably falls into that category. The original Gundam in general would probably fall into that category, with later installments having a more accessible/wide appeal and the added advantage of newer art/animation.

There's obviously some risk of releasing too much Gundam for people to actually pick up and if people don't get the releases when they're new then they may be less likely to get them later. That said, I think Anime Limited have done a reasonable job of spacing their releases out so far (maybe a little too much space, though I'd imagine they have their reasons). Due to circumstances at the moment, people will probably be less likely to take a chance on anything but I think the interest in Gundam is high enough that it's still a candidate for many people. Gundam also seems to be the sort of thing that fans like to stick to and collect all of once they get into it, so that's another positive.

I think between 2 boxes of Zeta, then 2 boxes of ZZ, Char's Counterattack, then Turn A, possibly Build Fighters, and any other Gundam already in the works, I think they could hold of 24 months and still have people interested the Gundam enough to pick up the movies without feeling like they've just bought the series version.

I just don't feel the need (or really could afford) to double dip for something so similar yet. I'd rather have something different, and then go back to it.

Lots of people wanted the films because the films are canon for UC and are generally viewed as superior.

Also, I believe the cheapest the series has gone for is £76, which is a lot of money. I'd assume the films would be somewhat cheaper, so people would be more willing to risk them.

Just to go back to the Gundam movies discussion, I'd love the movies on BD. I just recently picked up the series but I have no intention in watching all of it again (I've seen it twice), at least not any time in the foreseeable future, but I'd watch the movies today if they were available on BD. I'll pick up any Gundam released in the UK on BD, if it's DVD then I'm pretty unsure as frankly I don't wanna buy DVDs anymore. With that said though the only Anime Limited DVD I own is Outlaw Star and that looks great for a DVD, awful subtitles aside (that is not to say I wouldn't buy a BD set of Outlaw Star should it become available, mainly for the cleaner subtitles....).

I wonder when Mobile Suit Gundam Thinderbolt: The December Sky will ship?

We're waiting for stock and packing material, so once we have those we'll be set. Most likely will start shipping next week :)

Anime Limited Newswire #79/80

New Info:
  • Psycho Pass: The Movie will be released on 8th August 2016, the same date that Project Itoh: The Empire of Corpses is currently due.
  • News on a dozen of titles will be detailed soon. The crew apologise for the lack of info (probably busy trying to argue who best girl of Love Live! Sunshine!! is).
  • The crew are going to Hyper Japan Festival but there will be no panel aside from Jeremy popping up at the booth.
  • Next conventions are Amecon and MCM Manchester, more info due soon.

Funimation UK
  • All titles, with the exception of Fairy Tail and the sub-only DVD-only titles (like Rainy Cocoa), will be a Blu-ray & DVD Combo Pack.
  • All DVDs will be in NTSC format.
  • The content will be identical to the US version. That includes the load-up previews and trailers.
  • Funimation UK will only be distributing titles that haven't been picked up here in the UK.
  • They are looking into the possibility of getting Fairy Tail on Blu-ray, but no news as it stands.
  • In terms of release dates, they are aiming to close the gap as soon as possible but it'll take a short while to reach that goal. Chances are that the UK releases will be a few weeks late.
