Tokyo Ghoul √A - Episodes 08-12 (Completed)
I feel like this could be controversial, not least because it may be the most ridiculous U-turn in anime reviewing history, but these episodes are easily the best of Tokyo Ghoul's entire run (and I mean both series here). This marked improvement in quality seems to occur as the season overcomes most of the huge narrative problems of it's first half, eventually starting to have a coherent plotline that for the most part makes sense and manages to curtail the first half's problem of picking up and dropping plot strands at random. For the most part I like these episodes because they're fun, tense and have great character moments which feel genuine rather than manipulative. Even Juzo who started off as quite feasibly the most unlikeable character ever, manages to partly redeem himself before the end. This season as a whole seems to rely a lot less on trying to shock people than the first (though that might just be because there's way more censorship this season) and it really helps the show feel sincere towards it's characters. Whereas the first season made them feel like tools being used solely to screw with the audience, this season seemed to genuinely care and want the best for everyone, even the crazy ones they wanted dead last season.
I do have some problems with the final episode, most notably how do the CCG know Hide is missing? Also, Hide was a porter, what kind of Police force is so fricking desperate they send a porter to battle and have them fulfil an armed role? Me reading too much into the show aside, Hide's death scene was seriously underplayed, for something so obviously telegraphed for the two seasons, I found it weird and a little disappointing that they didn't ham it up a bit (and I did laugh at that ridiculous clunking sound effect immediately afterwards). It also felt like there were a lot of missed opportunities with the final episode, shots that could have really haunting and beautiful that weren't. I don't know why I was expecting them to, TG isn't that kind of show, but I was repeatedly struck by how certain shots in that final episode could have been entrancingly beautiful and how that would have probably made the show way more horrific. But even these flaws (and my ridiculous expectations) don't ruin the show and I may be the only person in the world that thinks this, but I'd be more than happy to have the creative team behind √A back, even if it means we have sit through four and a half episodes of crap to get to the good stuff.

As an aside, it's interesting to note the way people's reaction to 'issues' with shows change depending on whether they want to like it or not. World Trigger does an OP 8 minutes in and it's ridiculous, Tokyo Ghoul does it and no one bats an eyelid.
No idea what I'll watch next. I have a tonne of stuff on my watchlist, but I don't really know if I want to watch any of it at the moment. I suppose if I'm going to keep going on about World Trigger, I should actually catch up at some point (I'm well aware how ridiculous and hypocritical this makes me), so I'll probably try and power through the next arc, even if I can't bear the thought of how awkward it will be...
