One Punch Man - Episode 2

Really like what I'm seeing of this so far. I'd be interested in purchasing the JP BDs at this stage should Engsub be included since it's been handed to incompetent distributors in both the US (Viz) and UK (Kaze). (Granted the US release could be salvaged entirely by giving the job of BD authoring to Justin.)
Unfortunately the JP release doesn't have ENG subtitles.

Perfect Insider ep1

Liked it a little more than I was expecting to (given that bugger all actually happens in this episode), just not enough to go running to back to CR premium to keep up with the simulcast.

Beautiful Bones -Sakurako's Investigation- ep 2. It's massively unrealistic in it's depiction of crime scene investigations and police procedure, and relies on convenient coincidence to progress the story. Still a decent watch though, as long as you don't take it too seriously.

Young Black Jack ep 2. An interesting ethical quandry, but the ending was both a load of bull and a copout.

Tokyo Ghoul √A - Episode 02

I wrote notes as I watched this episode, there was nothing but a series of plot-related questions and general insults aimed at Akira. I feel like the beginning of the episode of the episode was just presenting scenes and hoping you'll be able to guess the context required for them to make sense, consequently the whole episode was a bit of a mess. All of this is not helped by them skipping events which should have been really important. (We never see Kankei's first meeting with Aogiri. I can't work out if we're supposed to find their interactions mysterious or not, because the lack of anything to go on there is actually just annoying. In fact that entire plot point makes no sense, because we're given nothing to go on. I'm assuming there's logic behind it, but the anime certainly doesn't let us know what it is.)

I know we're supposed to hate him, but clearly Seidō Takizawa is the only likeable new CCG inspector, so why they're trying to turn us against him is beyond me. Making him less likeable does absolutely nothing to improve Juzo or Akira...

Also, please tell me Juzo gets killed/seriously injured at some point? Christ, he's intolerably annoying (and yes, I did have to google his gender).

Tokyo Ghoul √A - Episode 03

I may have to stop writing about this show, because I'm just writing the same thing over and over and over; this show is utterly baffling, there's no sense of time, there's barely any sense of plot, major things just happen/appear without explanation, there are characters that I'm assuming must play a huge part in the end of the season and yet we still haven't even been given a name for. It feels like a bunch of random scenes arranged broadly in chronological order, with no thought given to how they connect to tell the story (or more precisely don't connect to the tell story).

The end reveal of the Gourmet coming to get Kaneki had me in stitches, where the hell did that come from?

Also, spotting your huge plot hole and retrospectively correcting it is great, but maybe don't wait until after I've written a huge paragraph to do it next time? (Although that still doesn't explain why Hide hasn't gone to the Police with information that Kaneki is still alive or why the Police haven't found him.)

From what I understand they cut loads from the (highly regarded & loved) Manga & changed key elements so the show ended up a complete mess (Season 2 more so than 1)

I'm enjoying your comments about your show, I'm looking forward to the final episode write-up.

I knew things had been changed, but I was expecting a coherent narrative at the very least, and when people said lots of things were left hanging, I assumed they meant there was no resolution, rather than no set-up...

Thanks  :)

Tantei Team KZ Jiken Note Episode 2.

This is a bit slower paced than I expected, I'm now wondering if they'll even get around to solving one case. To be fair, it looks like the one incident might lead them to another bigger case after all, although technically the only link at the moment is that the other case was mentioned in the show rather than there being substantial evidence. It's possible that the new case will have something even bigger behind it as well but it kind of already feels like it's gotten a bit big for the kids (I'm not sure 11/12 year olds should be pursuing armed robbers).

I'm not sure if the mysteries are all that important to the series anyway, most of the episode was Aya interacting with her new "friends". I'm still not sure if this show is self-aware or not. The first thing that Aya does is basically get manipulated into helping Wakatake and she realises what's happening but for some reason still believes that he genuinely considers her a friend. It's an odd contrast, on the one hand she understands what he was doing but she doesn't seem to follow that to the natural conclusion that his assertion of friendship could also be manipulation (at the end of the day their friendship really only consists of Aya helping him out so far). I suppose it is a bit of a silly thing he's getting her to help with though, which does make it seem like more of an excuse to bring her into the group.

That said, the fact that Aya's skills aren't exactly being used effectively to help solve a mystery is kind of strange in a show that claims to be about a group solving mysteries using the combination of their unique skills. In fairness, Aya isn't the only one underusing her skills since the only one that really uses their ability is Wakatake (to get everyone motivated to bother about helping him). Uesugi, the maths genius, tries to contribute by noticing that Wakatake's bike chain was yellow and that it was broken, which is a little underwhelming. The social guy helped by finding the broken chain and the other social guy (Ladies man version) helped by walking Aya home (also, I'm fairly sure he insulted her but I may not have been paying attention and she didn't seem to notice either).

I'll keep watching for now, I think I'm just interested in the way the show seems to be carefully constructed to (possibly deliberately) be mediocre. I suspect it could also be a case of adults making a show for children without really giving the children the credit they deserve. For some reason though, I find it entertaining (it being short maybe helps).

I also watched Anime De Training! Ex (Episode 1) because I was curious.

It wasn't too bad really, I learned how to do push ups and crunches (though I didn't do any, that's asking too much) and the main character is kind of funny/cute (though in a very "manufactured" feeling way). It had an interesting mix of fanservice, cuteness and educational value.

The picture seemed oddly blurry on occasion, mostly when panning I think. I'm not sure if that was at my end, a problem with Crunchyroll or an issue with the show itself. It's a shame because otherwise the show feels kind of well constructed. The fanservice doesn't go far enough that it should put anyone off and, while it's a little obvious, it doesn't feel totally out of place.

I don't really know how to judge this one, it's not really a normal kind of show. I guess it seems to do what it's trying to in a fairly effective and inoffensive manner. The blurring issue detracts from the show a fair bit though so if it is a problem with the show itself then it's hard to say that it fully meets it's already low ambitions.

Fairy Tail season 2 episode 80

Young Black Jack episode 3 - Looks like the episodic approach is ending next week for what I presume is a two-parter, which should be interesting. Still enjoying the show but I do think the soundtrack overdoes things now and again.

Noragami Aragoto episode 3

Tokyo Ghoul √A - Episodes 04 & 05

Does anybody have party poppers? Something amazing just happened, after falling back on it's silly old "you smell like Rize, so I'm going to Kill you" shtick, the season recovers and gives us the first genuinely great scene of the entire series. The scene starts with the first scary moment across both seasons of the show (It was the image of souped up insane Kaneki eating the inspector after the building has been flooded with CRC gas, if anybody's interested.), then follows up with a great emotional moment for Inspector Amon, before giving us another great atmospheric moment with the introduction of The One-Eyed Owl. If they were capable of that scene, why'd they give us four and half episodes of crap first?

Speaking of crap, before that great scene, we had the ridiculous Nashiro death scene, in which the show forcefully and very heavy handedly tries to get you to give a **** about two characters who I don't remember having had more than a line of dialogue before and surprisingly it just about gets away it even if it does feel manipulative and a scene where Kaneki just randomly goes full-on batshit crazy mid-battle without either explanation or warning. Giving us some context may have helped there, but I get the feeling there wasn't a whole lot of context to get from that scene. There's also some atrocious Terraformars-level blur censoring of a knife fight and a scene in which we discover destroying the computer system automatically releases all of a prison's inmates except one. :p

It was during that scene I suddenly remembered; what happened with the Gourmet? The show seems to have moved on without telling us anything. I guess that will be one of many major plot points that get suddenly dropped without warning...

Tokyo Ghoul √A - Episodes 06 & 07

In the space of a single conversation, they decide to make Akira likeable and then turn her into even more of a bitch than she was before. Then after an evening they try and make her likeable again. It seems highly flippant of them, but somehow the conversation is also plausible.

Also, how many specialist units are they going to set up? You'd think they'd get the memo at some point and realise they don't work...
