Rampo Kitan: Game of Laplace - Episodes 01 & 02

The show is deadly serious for it's entire first episode then 5 minutes into it's second, just randomly bursts into a fairly long and clearly intentional joke autopsy sequence? I'm down for either, but it seems weird that they went from one extreme to the other so quickly.

Noooo, not Kurumi! Ah man, that really got to me. Miki's reaction to Taroumarou's bowl at the end too. Interested to see what's going to happen to Yuki now she seems to be coming out of her delusions. One thing I did notice is the opening has changed again. At the start when the title appears you used to see the silhouettes of all the characters chasing Taroumarou but this time you only saw Taroumarou walking. I hope this isn't some kind of sign that all the characters die. Then, at the end of the OP, Yuki's hat has blood on it. I must say, I do love how much work goes into altering the OP slightly every week with subtle changes.

During the episode they said there's medicine. My guess is that Megu-Nee went down to the basement to try and get the medicine but it was too late so she decided to write down her will/last message to the girls before she went into Zombie mode. Judging by the episode preview, Yuki will be the one who'll get the medicine and face her illusions at the same time. Hopefully at the end of Episode 11 Kurumi will be saved.

But given this is a Nitroplus series everyone is going to suffer.

That was definitely the most explicit episode of Okusama yet. You've got to wonder whether the final episode will just bite the bullet and show full on sex - they've done pretty much everything else so far.
 
Psycho-Pass 01-09. I'm going upto Scotland loves Anime anime I'll be watching the movie there. Plus it give me the kick up the backside to finally see it after seeing the first 5 episodes dubbed about a year ago. It's got a hell of a lot better Japanese dub then the English! I'm glad I decided yo rewatch the first 5 in Japanese along with the rest.

I never watched PP with subtitles but I did try and watch PP2 with subs. I found it almost impossible to follow and was generally confused until I watched the dub. Not sure if that was because the dub helped or the second viewing helped.

Im not really a dub fan. It seemed ok. But in the rewatch they characters have come across more engaging than they did before.

As for it being confusing that might be the sci-fi heavy stuff. I've read and heard on a few titles that are sci-fi heavy people found the dubs easier to understand. I've never found it an issue, for example i like to watch ghost in the shell subbed.

Well that certainly went down an unexpected route. I kinda knew the possibility of Ayumi coming back in some fashion was all but inevitable but I never thought they'd go down the time travel, multiple timeline route. I'm interested to see what they do with this.

My Love Story!! (Japanese audio) - Episodes 09-10

Since the final episode has been delayed by a week I decided now was the time to catch up with the series. This show is amazing! :)

Yeah pretty much. The final episode's title mentions the rest of the family so it's probably going to be a serious episode.

I hope the final episode has some Rin moments... (*image below is Safe*)

Evangelion Eps 4@5

Macross DYRL - the JP Blu Ray PQ is absolutely gorgeous. It's difficult imagining the movie ever looking better than it does here :thumb:

Macross Flashback 2012 - Undoubtedly the best it's looked, but clearly the constituent scenes taken from the series and DYRL are not taken from the latest masters. Plenty of print damage remains whereas it's removed in the other releases. Still looks good, but definitely not as good as either the series or DYRL Blus and could have looked even better.

City Hunter Ep1 - think I might enjoy this :D

I actually just watched the first episode of City Hunter 1 again on a whim right now after seeing your comment, and yup its still great. Hope you enjoy the series, it ramps up a lot and gets real good :thumb:

DYRL looks amazing on Blu-ray as you said, however what I found interesting with the Blu-ray is the spliced in Flashback 2012 scenes in the end which is notably worse quality PQ wise. Like you said, 2012 isn't in the best of shapes but I still loved the film itself and the way it looked. Might sound weird, but the dodgy PQ works in its favor and adds a level of authenticity to the whole production :p I feel similar when watching the Daicon shorts.
 
Yep, you're right. The spliced FB2012 footage is worse than the rest. Watchable but not as sharp as the rest of the movie. The DYRL blu is stark contrast to the first time I saw the movie, on VHS! :D Did you ever see Clash of the Bionoids? I had that version on VHS as well. Terrible, although amusing in hindsight. 30+ minutes were cut from DYRL which led to a number of issues, the worst being that the last time you see Hikaru is just before he blasts Bodolza. Que explosion and then you don't see Hikaru again thus giving the impression that he died! :D

I love the new, post series content in FB - the whole Megaroad-01 launch was originally intended to be shown at the end of the TV series, but they ran out of time and cash. Got there in the end though.

Given that the majority of FB's content is taken from the series and DYRL I had played around with the idea of ripping those scenes from the respective blu rays and overlaying the soundtrack to give a better version, but when they started merging in some real world archival footage in I figured that that together with the original content just made it not really worthwhile.

Although, I do agree, the 'rougher' footage on the FB blu does have a charm to it, and as you said, the film itself is still great! :thumb:

Just to confuse me, apparently the literal translation of the title is Ranpo Kitan, but FUNi's title is Rampo Kitan. How stupid.

Based on the reaction it's been getting elsewhere, this show seems to be a really acquired taste, but I'm personally really enjoying it, even when it does go off on quite frankly bizarre interludes.

I noticed that the key art FUNimation are using casts Hashiba as the lead, but the Japanese key art seems to focus more on either Kobayashi and Akechi as a duo or all three of them. I wonder if Hashiba is going to be more important later on and FUNi are accidentally giving the game away...


Also, special props to whoever decided it was a good idea to trap the protagonists in a room with a cat, a pervert, a baby and a literal time bomb whilst extremists attack the building below them and threaten to shoot everyone. Who ever said the art of throwing **** at the wall and seeing what sticks is dead?

Cute episode and a lot of funny moments in this one too. I will say though, I do feel like I'm always missing something watching a Christmas themed episode when it isn't Christmas.

To be fair this is nothing to do with FUNimation (or literal translation, as nothing is being translated). When the ん sound comes before certain sounds it's often rendered as 'm' rather than 'n' in romanised form, for example in familiar words such as tempura and kempo. It's believed that this makes the words easier to pronounce accurately, like the choice to generally romanise the し sound as 'shi' instead of 'si'.

In any case, Ranpo and Rampo are exactly the same word. I believe the show (which I have yet to see, regrettably) is referencing the famous Edogawa Ranpo whose name is frequently rendered as Rampo in exactly the same way. FUNimation chose the spelling they assumed was most well known in the west. The fact that some people (like me) prefer strictly romanising ん as 'n' has no bearing on the accuracy of their title and anyone who says 'Rampo' is incorrect is simply wrong. In many cases the Japanese person themselves prefers the 'm' spelling to ensure that people pronounce the word properly.

Tl;dr - the only 'correct' way to spell the series' name is 乱歩奇譚 and anything else is an equally inaccurate approximation, so anyone who is telling you FUNimation made an error in the title is full of it.

That makes sense, I thought it was weird that FUNi were using one spelling and everybody else, even people that normally go with the official English title were using the other.

It's a series loosely adapted from some of his Kogoro Akechi stories. I think fans of his will be disappointed though, because the show abandons any attempt at creating a mystery fans can work out after it's second episode, and just goes straight for comedy-drama instead. Weirdly it's from the creative team behind the Assassination Classroom anime and it suffers from similar tonal uneasiness but to a much greater extent, the show seems to veer very suddenly from serious mystery to very childish comedy, often fairly dark in nature, and it does not fit together at all.

That said, despite being aware of how flawed it is, none of them annoy me and I am really enjoying it. I think it is an acquired taste most will hate though.
 
I think in most cases people do go with 'n' - though I definitely remember seeing 'sempai' a lot more frequently back in the old days. It's almost always 'n' now though. I've personally always felt 'n' is closer to the actual sound, anyway.
