Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040: Episodes 22-26 (End)
Well...where do I start? Firstly, the episode with the refugees could have been completely omitted. Why add more characters we don't care about? Then, all Knight Sabers apart from Linna are paired up which makes Linna, 'more expendable' in her eyes (although it was interesting that Linna is inferred to be lesbian). I was also wondering when do we get some backstory on Galatea? Then right on cue, in episode 25, finally the viewer is treated to about 15 minutes of AI vs humanity philosophy which should have been peppered throughout the episodes. Galatea is a rubbish villian and does nothing but stand there. Her evolution of merging into a building, then floating into space and taking over satellites are so OTT and feels rather shoehorned as if it were a 'RPG final boss'. Because Galatea is also essentially Sylia, it would make more sense if the epic battle was just Sylia vs Galatea. Priss is the 'anti-seed' but there was absolutely no build up to this whatsoever.
As it stands, the character development is poor because it revolves around the agency of men (Macky especially, followed by Mason, Leon and Nigel) instead of being about the Knight Sabers and their personal problems. Regardless, the end story arc is poorly thought out and the series is unnecessarily stretched to achieve a 26 episode count.
THAT ending too. So bad. Linna and Nene hugging each other naked on a beach, Sylia crying for Macky, star showers and Priss singing a song in a desert. Not exactly how I imagined the finale of the Knight Sabers saga. I suppose we can infer that boomers are eradicated forever (or at least until 2041). So much disappointment. Series started off great and then when Macky gets introduced, it goes downhill. The core plotline centres around him and Nigel. Give me back the old Knight Sabers, especially Sylia. By the end of 2040, she relies on Nigel to do everything for her when in the original OVAs, she did all the work. And one final note, the awful 90's grunge music cannot compare to the power rock of the 80's.
I will always remember Bubblegum by the vastly superior OVAs.
