Goodbye, Don Glees! (Film)
Though featuring very solid voice acting and animation much of the film felt like fairly typical coming-of-age musings where the final 20ish minutes elevated it a bit. I’ll rewatch this eventually to give it another shot as a whole. 3/5

Great Pretender: Razbiluto
ONAs 1-4 (Complete. Great Pretender was a solid anime but this sequel film didn’t do as much for me.) 3/5

Gridman Universe (Film)
An enjoyable feature that ended on a positive note. 3.5/5

Grozier X
episodes 1-2

Ergo Proxy Episodes 6-18 - I really did just stop watching this show at a bad place back in 2021. With hindsight the first 3 episodes of the show are their own mini arc and the rest of it is the continuation.

Ergo Proxy is very much a product of the mid-2000s. It’s an anime-original show that was allowed to be this grungy and dour with enough money left over to get a Radiohead song for the ending theme. But also there’s things the series is doing visually that feel like they have totally fallen by the wayside now that animators are more skilled with the modern digital tools. Also I found out how the lead scriptwriter, Dai Satō, wrote one of the more psychedelic episodes of Lupin the Third: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine. Which explains a lot about both works.

The surprising strength of the show is its consistent sense of humour. While it is a bleak vision of the world the characters and setting still have a wide range of emotions as they deal with things. Which really does humanise them and help them break out of their standard roles. Re-L and Vincent being roommates for a few weeks ends with them being completely demystified about one another.
So I am excited to see how this ends.

Not going to update every time I watch (see Anilist in my sig 😜) but I just completed K-On (ending with the movie) and now my heart is burdened knowing there will be no more K-On

(Can Bocchi S2 come sooner to heal me a little!)

Push the Button.
I thought this was a very good show. It was a mix of A Place Further, Girls' Last Tour and School Live. So a bunch of friends travel with a goal in mind through a strange apocalyptic world, but is Japan not a fictional place. I loved the character dynamics especially between Akira, the snarky bookworm, and Reimi, the meatheaded gyaru. Although there was a lot of that rapid fire talking, but it was mostly banter between the girls rather than exposition, so I got the jist and didn't feel like I missed important information.
Art and animation were really good too.
8/10

Dan Da Dan
(dub) eps 1-4
I want to believe!
I wanted to watch something that would be a bit more action-y and wouldn't matter as much if I watched dubbed. Most of the Summer '24 shows I have on my PTW seem like subbed would be better (or might not even have option of dubbed) and they all seem SoLy or romance.
Anyway this is quite bizarre, but the two leads seem to have some good chemistry building and Seiko is a blast.
The action is quite similar to Yuasa, but slightly different with this seeming to be the first director role for the director, Yamashiro, who has worked on other Science Saru projects under Yuasa.

Urusei Yatsura (1981) ep8-10

Feels a bit like I’ve fallen into the same trap as with Ranma, in that I’m spending more time mentally comparing both the original and remake versions than just enjoying watching the show, but I think these have been the most noticeably different so far, it feels like Oshii’s just taking the basic premise of the story and doing his own thing with it. I do find this version funnier, but it can be a bit squirm inducing to see just quite how unsympathetically Ataru comes across by comparison (but he has redeeming qualities, right? Right?).

It’s also noticeably hornier, with a brief, casual glimpse of Princess Kurama’s exposed breasts at one point, although I wouldn’t be surprised if that actually was in the manga and just cut from the 2022 series.
