Gosick: Episodes 7-14 -
Sympathy for the Grevil
Some good episodes here, some less good. I generally like the direction Gosick is taking, I like the way new characters are being introduced into the mix (I like Avril, it feels like she's added a bit of missing spice) and familiar ones are gradually accumulating depth. I like the atmosphere and the feel of it, at its best Gosick is reminding me of nothing so much as a slightly darker twist on Hergé's
Adventures of Tintin, with Kujō and Victorique being drawn into a succession of mysteries and conspiracies in inter-war Europe with a hint of the paranormal hanging over everything. Grevil would absolutely not seem out of place alongside the Thompson twins either (the detectives, not the band, though his haircut might suggest otherwise). All Avril needs is a bottle of rum.
Let's not go to Saillune/Sayrune/Seyrun/Seirūn(?) it is a silly place.
The ending to the S...
wherever arc however seemed rushed to the point of feeling a bit ridiculous.
"We're going to prove my mother's innocence! I know who the real murderer is, but I don't know how to prove it." "Wow, a major milestone your story arc has been building up to Victorique, surely this will be your most difficult challenge yet?" "Nah, not really, you're going to put on a spooky mask and scare the real murderer into immediately confessing in the next scene, then I'm going to monologue about how she did it since we used up too much time on the case of some people who wanted to steal a jug, or something." It felt like a fairly major cop-out after setting up what seemed like such a promising plot thread. Things have improved in the episodes since, but it did make me reconsider how I felt about the show's previously very good pacing. The purple dress Victorique era seems off to a good start though, it feels like there's a deeper and more involved mystery going on here.
Avril, you look disturbingly enthused about religiously motivated genocide. Avril no, particularly not in this time period, pls.
I'm not sure how to feel about Kujō and Victorique's characters and relationship at the moment. Victorique's attitude towards Kujo often has me wishing he would grow a spine,
particularly since I'm privy to his memories where it's shown his father was obviously verbally and physically abusive, which makes me annoyed at Victorique on his behalf for continuing to abuse someone who's been abused his whole life. You don't know how hard I was willing him to just sit down and eat that cake in front of her, at least someone did. But then Victorique will get upset and berate herself privately for being such a social reject (which is not her fault either)
presuming of course that Grevil doesn't get in first and I feel bad for her as well. The expectations, judgement and legacy of their parents seems to be a major theme for both of them (and to a certain degree for Grevil as well) which probably makes the behaviour of all of them understandable, even if it's often not particularly likeable. I guess the fact that
I'm feeling for the characters is still a good thing, I'd just like to see them open up to and gain a bit more understanding of one another (the stand-alone episode 11 was good from this point of view). While it's obvious they care about each other it's not always obvious
why because it kinda feels like the audience know the characters better than they know each other.
