What manga are you reading now?

Sakura Trick vol 1-8 (end) - This one was ultimately satisfying but the romantic development for the main couple was almost painfully slow for a yuri manga. As it's a 4-koma, 8 books is actually a pretty large volume of text compared to a more standard format. The main couple eventually sort out their feelings and all is well, but for most of the series one of the side couples was actually more interesting.

There are however several post-ending oneshots by the author which are very satisfying (and kinda spicy). I almost wish Tachi would make an entire continuation series based on this later material à la 'Citrus+' or 'Kase-san & Yamada', but I'm still very happy with what we've got.

Death March to the Parallel World Rhapsody ch 95

Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest ch 131

Hajimete no Gal ch 156

Blood on the Tracks Volume 4 - 😮

Princess Tutu Duck shat brix.png

So proud of our boy for standing up to Mummy Dearest! Not that I ever had a remotely negative view of him before (the poor thing he's just a kid) but good on him, and his gf is the best she's so sweet... ofc I'm sure it will all continue to go horribly wrong but like... yeah i loved this volume :)

Read 'Roll Over and Die vol 1 (light novel)': I feel like this series was written specifically to appeal to me for some reason. It's a dark fantasy series with gory battles and not a small amount of body horror, but also has a slowburning lesbian romance that is nonetheless apparant from the first volume. I'll warn, this series absolutely isn't for everyone. If you can't handle extreme gore you'll have a bad time because some of the descriptions are really gruesome. For me though, this book has been an absolute blast. God I love sword lesbians!

The only potential downside I can see with this series is that it has four volume currently out but a new one hasn't been released in Japan since 2020. The author says a new one will be out this year, but even if that happens, it'll be a good while before I can get volume 5 in English once I make my way through what's already available. Gonna try and savour these.

Read 'Asumi-chan Is Interested in Lesbian Brothels' vol 1-2: Is it bad that I kinda adore this? I mean yes, the obvious "appeal" of this series is pretty clear from the title, but what I wasn't prepared for was how funny it would be. And while the initial conceit of the plot may seem like a contrived reason to show porn every chapter (it sorta still is), it's also kinda compelling and I am genuinely rooting for her. It's interesting watching Asumi clearly becoming more confident and bold with each chapter as well, with it translating to her daily life.

With regard to the "meat" of what this series is about, it also seems a little more grounded than more obviously male gazey ones I've stumbled across in the past. There are for example no impossible body proportions or absurd ahageo faces to be seen as of the chapter I am up to. I feel slightly sketchy having it on my shelf even though I love it, but thankfully nobody is likely to take a close look at individual titles except me. I didn't go digital, that is the path of the coward.

Read 'Motto Hanjuku Joshi' c1-13 (end) - God I love any yuri by Morishima-sensei. She's so incredibly talented and so few of her works are given official English releases. I scramble for the crumbs of what I can get. This one was adorable if a bit directionless and rushed. I suppose being published in Galette will do that, what with its quarterly publication. At least I found it after it was finished and don't have to endure the kind of pain I get with waiting around for Morinaga-sensei's 'My Cute Little Kitten'. Can't one of these stupid magazines give her a serialisation as long and consistent as 'Girl Friends' again please?

Audiobooks
Overlord vol 8
Really enjoyed this volume. Works as 2 short stories. One focused on the village girl Enri and the other on the inhabitants of Nazarick.

86 vol 3 & 4
Vol 3 continues to fill the gap between the end of vol 1 and its epilogue and was very good. Vol 4 now moves beyond that and was great too. The racism themes of the first 1 are back front and centre here. It's a pretty heavy light novel in that sense. At times it's almost a horror and it gets the atmosphere of the terrible situation spot on. We also get more varied views expressed directly from more characters. The series has been good until now but this vol feels like a big step up.

In part, I think it was just because I was looking for examples of how to draw bullet hits, but I’ve been reading through the Hellsing manga lately. I’ve read a bit of it before, but never the whole thing - it’s quite a different experience from the two anime adaptations.

The Ultimate anime is certainly broadly faithful to the manga, but reading the manga has made me think a lot about how the choices made in pacing of scenes and so on can really alter the feel of something. The manga feels less self-serious somehow, it’s often almost closer in tone to something like Evil Dead 2. Even the sack of London, which was one of the few things in anime I’ve ever been genuinely bothered by, was only a few brief pages.

The English translation is also quite special, given that whatever absolute madlad was in charge of it seems to have decided to render all the regional accents with the same degree of subtlety as an episode of Allo Allo. I don’t know if Anderson is canonically supposed to be Glaswegian or not, but I keep expecting to turn a page and find he’s calling someone a mad rocket...

Read 'Otherside Picnic' vol 1-4 (light novel) - Yes please I would like useless lesbians with my hard sci-fi. That would be the best thing ever actually. Damn it you love each other Sorawo, why won't you kiss her already?!😭

Update: I had like 20 pages left of vol 4 and can now confirm that kissing has happened!
