Oh I meant patlabor doh XD.
I don't know why but I just had a bath and while washing my hair I thought to myself "Why did he randomly ask about Macross? Maybe he asked about Patlabor and I instead wrote about Macross and I have egg on my face". Don't ask me why I think about such things while in the bath :|
Anyways to answer your question, there's two timelines, the
Movie Timeline, which consists of the
7 Episode OVA (named The Early Days OVA, MVM released this on both DVD and BD) which then leads into the
First Movie and the
Second Movie. All three of these are directed by
Oshii, the man who later went on to direct Ghost in the Shell. The OVA is really cool as you'd expect, but being only 7 episodes and two films, its pretty short. The two films are two of the greatest animated films on the planet, with an amazing soundtrack and beautiful animation, and although the first keeps in tone with the OVA, the second film is very wordy and political. There's a third film that came out in the early 2000's, it takes place between the two films, but it isn't really a Patlabor film and more of a thriller/Horror within the Patlabor universe.
The second timeline is known as the
Television Timeline and was not only directed by a different person, but came out in-between the production of the 7 episode OVA and the first film. Being a separate timeline, its not connected to the Film Timeline but is instead basically a longer version of the 7 episode OVA, with the TV Series being
47 episodes with a 16 episode OVA sequel called
The New Files. These two are the meat of Patlabor. Hopefully this isn't confusing, but here's an image to help just in case:
Both timelines are phenomenal, but
I suggest starting with the TV Timeline (47 episode TV series and then the 16 episode OVA), so you get to known the characters and the world before watching the films, but you can't go wrong either way I guess. The TV series is available in multiple parts on Blu-ray:
Part 1,
Part 2,
Part 3,
Part 4 and
the sequel OVA (The New Files) which MVM released but on DVD also
here.
Sorry for the unnecessarily complicated post lol.
TLDR: I'd recommend starting with the TV Series and its sequel and then the 7 Episode OVA and films. Also, you might be able to find them cheaper elsewhere
