UK Anime Blu-ray & DVD Bargains

I'm preparing to get bashed but play.com has Studio Ghibli titles from £4.99 - £7.99 which is quite reasonable, although it isn't a sale exactly.

I'd say wait for the Blu-rays, but Ghibli are taking their time to get the releases right. It may be a while so you needn't deprive yourself of Ghibli goodness in the meantime.

But if it's Ponyo, Laputa, or My Neighbours The Yamadas you are after, pay the extra and get the Blu-rays. Especially as they are double play releases with the DVD as well. You can at least watch the films if you are still to upgrade your set up.

Nausicaa is out on Blu-ray too, but it isn't a double play with DVD.

My Neighbours The Yamadas

Is this even worth getting? i see it and think "storyboard mode meets shin chan" Looks really basic, but if the comedy is there then i may pay for it.

It's quite funny, I wasn't expecting it to be great but was quite surprised when I watched it, it really is quite a charming fill and I'd recommend it.

I found it a nice bit of entertainment. Not spectacular, but gentle and heartwarming, if frivolous. It reminded me most of the Peanuts cartoons. I've given it a review...

I thought they would move it to Wednesdays.

So, is Shana worth owning?

At ten quid, yes.

It's a pretty generic action show, following a similar story furrow to Yu Yu Hakusho and Bleach. The main draw for most fans will be the tsundere titular character, a miniature, sword wielding shinigami, with fiery eyes, and a fiery personality.

The male protagonist is an every day school kid named Yuji, who dies and is then resurrected (sort of), and winds up helping Shana fight evil spirits. And they develop one of those will they, won't they relationships.

But like shows like Bleach and whatnot, Shana has a vocabulary all its own, an abundance of mythnobabble that appeals to committed fans of the show, but might turn casual viewers off.

It has a nice mix of comedy, action and drama, and the animation is of high standard. For me, the babble heavy story rates a 7/10, but the odd episode of comedy filler, especially early on, nudges it up to 8/10.

It's worth noting that there is a feature film and a second series which have been licenced, but are yet to be released in the US.

At £10 it is worth a punt. Especially if you like Fate/Stay Night

It's one of the bigest moe boom shows, the origin of Kugimin getting her typecast tsundere role. Entire show hinges on wether you like the lead or not.
It's an alright/good shounen fantasy with the titular katana wielding, pettanko, tsundere.

It one of the few moeboom shows that gets gradually better over the course of the show, and even develops some of the backstory behind shana. Shame alot of the episodes are fillers, and the second season is a pretty poor attempt at dragging the series on. Still £9.99 finally pushed me over the edge to buy it and at this rate I may aswell give AOL money each week *insert futuramatakeallmymoney.jpg*
