UK Anime Blu-ray & DVD Bargains

Yeah. The Fate/Zero artbox sold out really quickly last year. Managed to find a reasonably priced one on eBay with both parts, so I'd check there as often as possible.

One sold for £50 a week or so ago.

Honestly, I'm not bothered enough to pay the prices I've seen them go for. If I could get the artbox alone, sure I'd pay like £10-£15 for it but all the ones I've seen are like £40+ which is way more than I'd be willing to pay TBH despite that being a reasonable price considering it's OOP.

@Jatz I actually messaged that guy on ebay asking if he'd sell me just the box and he said no. Hardly surprising but you don't know if you don't ask :lol:

Bold. :lol: always good to try your luck, though.

Also, if you're registered with Madman, check your emails. I just got a discount coupon for 20% off my next order which is pretty good.

I got one of these too, used it to complete my Hellsing Ultimate collection.

If you missed the clearance sale, it isn't gone, it's just moved to the Last Chance to Buy section in the anime menu, although the prices aren't quite that low anymore. Still are a few bargains to be had, especially with 20% off.

Dammit. Really want that Gurren Lagann set, but can't really afford it right now. Didn't think it would actually happen when I said it. Still got other things (like Christmas presents) to buy first. Guess there's always next year. :/

Xmas Deal #11 - Gurren Lagann Ultimate Edition Blu-ray set
Price: £39.99
(116 units available)

We recently received returns, meaning unsold stock, from retailers of our out-of-print Gurren Lagann Ultimate Edition Blu-ray release.

All units that we have are brand new & sealed, but there might be a loose disc tray in the digipack component that was raised at the time of its release. This can be rectified by repositioning the tray and pressing firmly on the glued areas. As has been documented, this unfortunately was a problem that some people encountered.

So with the above in mind we thought we would give everyone the opportunity to purchase one of these sets at a price that we will never offer again as part of our 12 Days of Christmas 1-day deals.

Sweet I wanted this edition originally, recently got the normal version on bluray cheap but will just sell that =3

Holy moly, that £40 price. Impressive.

(Sale season is boring this year for me as I've been pretty good about buying things on release lately, bah!)
This is one of the only sales I've ever come across where a decent part of the emphasis was on preorders, though. ^^;

It's true, I'd be lying if I said it took me more than a fraction of a second to pull the trigger on that Terror in Resonance deal once I spotted it ^^;

But I've even been good with preorders lately and I'm usually too lazy to reshuffle everything ;_;

That's a good deal, though I think someone is already getting it for me as a Christmas gift as they claimed it a while ago :s

I can't say I've been paying a lot of attention to the Right Stuf sale (mostly to avoid temptation) but Haibane Renmei is a really good show that I think more people should try. The pacing and somewhat deceptive early atmosphere may put some people off but I think a lot of people will enjoy the intriguing mystery and personal drama aspects. I guess it's also possible that at least as many people as are put off will also find the pacing and atmosphere appealing.

I'd say that the Anime Limited release of 009 Re: Cyborg is pretty good so if you're interested in the film then I think it'd be worth picking up at that price (the booklet has some interesting information). That said, I'm not sure I could recommend the film itself. It's not terrible and it has some decent visuals and scenes but the actual story is a bit of a mess. There's quite a lot of philosophical rambling and symbolism if you like that kind of thing but I'm not sure any of it is particularly good or clever. It's a shame really because I suppose what it might have been trying to do could have been both interesting and kind of relevant to our times. I'm trying to think of nice things to say about it but I'm probably just making it worse. I suppose I did end up with a lot to say about the film after I'd watched it so maybe that's something.

I think you've hit the nail on the head there, it's a highly ambitious film that unfortunately does not succeed on any of the levels of it was trying to. I wonder if it's a case of the director's vision getting watered down throughout production or the director simply being unable to translate his vision to the screen.

Have you had a chance to check out the on-disc extras? I'm not especially interested in rewatching the film, but I am quite curious to see what the director wanted to achieve (because it is clear from the film that he was trying to achieve something), do you know if any of the extras touch upon that?

Offers on Zavvi.

Wings of Honneamise CE has now dropped to £16.19, £3.81 less than ALs offer during the 12 days of Christmas.

Fuse CE has also dropped to £16.19, £5.81 less than ALs preorder offer.

Kill la Kill volume 3 is down to £34.99 on bd.

Gurren Lagann on dvd is £9.89.

Rurouni Kenshin 3 has also dropped a further £1 down to £8.99.

They have also put up the majority of ALs Q1 line up.

Maybe not, my country changed to Aus somehow which changed the prices.

I haven't watched the disc based extras but the booklet does have an interview with the director (I'd imagine it's not the same one as the discs have). I'm not really sure my interpretation of the director's comments would do justice to what was intended. It's quite possible that the director's ideas were about as jumbled as the film itself or that it was a case where the idea was actually quite simple but was being treated as something more complex.

I have a few thoughts on the comments the director makes and the film itself (may be uninteresting, rambling and contain slight spoilers):
The director mentions that they wanted to deal with the subject of "god" and the idea that god might exist in each of us. Based on what happens in the film, I'd say that "His Voice" is basically a representation of the desires and beliefs of those who hear it. Essentially, people do what they want to do and try to justify it as some divine will, perhaps even going so far as to fool themselves into thinking their actions were actually that of another. I'm not really sure that's what the film was trying to say, maybe it meant that the divine will came first and that people naturally tend towards wanting the things that their god does. It could also be trying to say that you'll only hear god's voice properly if you have a good heart (though I'd say there's less evidence of that) and hearing it without understanding it can lead to tragedy.

The director does mention that they meant to leave things open to interpretation. It's interesting because it's not really clear that the director has their own interpretation. It does feel a little like they took the approach of throwing philosohpical sounding ideas together and hoping it made something of substance.

I guess it might be worth watching the interview to try and figure it out, though I'm not entirely confident that there's actually some worthy core idea that got lost along the way. I'd say it's at least somewhat possible that the film simply needed a bit more thought and planning put into the ideas. It could well be that the director had ideas for the events they wanted to happen and then tried to create something philosophical around it but couldn't quite think of something suitable.

It does seem that there are some comments on things like terrorism and the fact that people will often do things that they personally choose but try to justify with high ideals. That could be entirely my own thoughts trying to find meaning in the film though. Maybe that was the idea all along.
