The News Thread (for news that does not need a thread)

THE ONE PIECE has been officially announced during Jump Festa 2024. This is a remake of the East Blue saga which will not only be adapted by WIT Studio but will also be streaming exclusively on Netflix.

Pretty funny bit for Studio WIT, known for avoiding long adaptations and handing future seasons to other studios, to be the one rebooting One Piece.

Have we ever had a new season of an anime 17/18 years after the previous? Any new announcement of an anime over a decade after the last season is almost certainly going to be a themed cafe/event, OVA or remake at best.
Rurouni Kenshin, though given the mangakas proclivities the current run of the manga should have been cancelled and a new anime should never have been green lit. Act Age got canned for less and that was also due to one of the creators proclivities.

Are you talking about Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Kenkaku Romantan (2023)? According to MAL that is a remake of the original adaptation rather than a new season.

there have been long gap remakes like Fruits Basket (18 years), stuff that updates the source material like Osumatsu-san (26 years), or shows set in the same universe that are wild reimaginings like Gatchaman Crowds (34 years later). it's hard to tell what a new season is sometimes, like how is Devilman Crybaby related to the original series, or Trigun Stampede?

*all numbers are subject to change as they were from a quick google!

Higurashi: When They Cry did a pretty funny goof of this with the Gou/Sotsu series in 2020. It was initially marketed as a remake but it was actually a stealth sequel.

The first Astro Boy anime aired in 1963, the second in 1980 and the third in 2003.

The cancelled Tokyo Babylon 2021 series would also have had a long gap if it was made, as the OVA ended in 1994.

New trailer for Toei Animation's anime original Girls Band Cry set to broadcast spring 2024. Very cool to see Toei's interest in CG works extends to TV series as well. It's no Orange or Sanzigen but the CG looks pretty good.
