The News Thread (for news that does not need a thread)

It's hard to part with money for Earthsea but gotta catch em all.

(speaking of which, still looking for the Totoro steelbook if anyone fancies parting ways ;) )

I really liked Earthsea - and it was one of the favorite Ghibli movies of both of my daughters when they were younger. I actually like Earthsea more than either Spirited Away or Totoro, or Ponyo, for sure. Also, I think Therru is the cutest of all the Ghibli "princesses," with Nausicaa a close second. I had the opportunity but didn't bother to collect any of the first run UK Ghibli steelbooks, as I'm not really much of a steelbook fan, and the design for them seemed fairly bland-looking to begin with.

Sorry, I still like Spirited Away, but relative to the overall Ghibli universe, I only ranked it around 16 out of all 23 movies. Earthsea I ranked around 12. Some of us have already posted our Ghibli favorites lists over in the Ocean Waves thread in General Chit Chat, I believe... yeah, in that list, I have them at 13 and 15, so they're not so far apart.

Tales from Earthsea started so strongly :( then it just turned into a ridiculous rushed mess. It really got me wanting to read the books though (I still have yet to.)

They need to pick up the releases! Since they started doing the steelbooks I haven't bought any 'normal' releases so still haven't seen The wind rises or Marnie.

Timothy Dalton is superb

Oh and Dalton is the second best Bond for me next to Connery
I do like Daniel Craig, but yeah his 2 films were good (I saw The Living Daylights in the cinema), but probably too different to what had gone before for the fans to get behind. Didn't see the sort of stuff covered until Casino Royale.

Licence to Kill is my favourite Bond film, so
Brutal and well-made.

It isn't Tales from Earthsea. It's a film containing its characters, and name only.
Yeah, I keep hearing that as a criticism of it. It doesn't remotely interest me. I haven't read the original novels and have no intention of. I'm judging Ghibli's film purely on its own merits.

Personally, I've never found the plot confusing. Seems pretty easy to follow to me. I concede that Arren's motivation for what he did to his father is vague in the extreme, and that choosing a female seiyuu to voice the villain, Kumo/Cobb causes me a bit of puzzlement but, other than that, I really cannot find anything else to criticise it for. The voice cast is excellent and their performances are superb, resulting in appealing characters. In fact, there are some really memorable delicate scenes, such as the one where Ged explains the nature of 'The Balance' to Arren. And the showdown with Kumo/Cobb is pretty damn nailbiting!

I'm with @Girls wIth Guns on this one.
