The News Thread (for news that does not need a thread)

To be honest, I think manga fans are expecting it to reach that point. Apparently people guessed this was coming when he went on a fairly long uninterrupted run of chapters recently. They're also predicting that it won't return until at least late January.

Ashihara has previously taken time off for treatment of cervical spondylosis, so at least the fans aren't being accusatory and rude, like with Togashi.

On the plus side, it gives me time to finish the anime, and catch-up with the manga where I hear interesting things are afoot. Then come to crippling realisation that I am the only person who likes the anime and it's not coming back and everyone else in the world is collectively wrong.
You aren't the only one who likes the anime...I did as well.

Shame about the manga going on hiatus as it was coming to a good bit.

A shame about the author - although to be honest, I wouldn't have been surprised if World Trigger had been axed soon anyway. Imo it's been pretty poor recently, and has been ranking relatively lowly too.

Apparently it's standard for a series with regular gaps to rate more poorly than they otherwise might, and SJ's editorial team take this into account.

From a merchandising perspective, it apparently doesn't do too badly (WSJ told Ashihara the databook had sold well, and I think I saw a tweet saying they had to reprint it), so I suspect they'd be more likely to move it to a monthly magazine than kill it entirely. To be honest, that might be for the best, if Ashihara can't keep a weekly schedule without affecting his personal health.

From what I can recall - World Trigger was selling about the same as Bleach was per volume recently. So about average for a Shonen Jump series - but not blockbuster figures either.

There's been a lot of talk about WSJ recently because of the number of series that have left the magazine recently. While I think there's a danger they'll lose long-time readers, I think it's also a good thing in terms of opening up the magazine in terms of more opportunities for new series to thrive. My Hero Academia shows how a series can go from a standing start to a genuine blockbuster in just two years. All we need is another talent like that.

Thunderbolt was really odd, because Gundam info youtube channel streamed episode 1 for free for the UK and episode 2 IIRC (although, it was only for a couple of days). But for 3 and 4, they like forgot about the UK :/.

I wonder if, like with The Origin, we'll see it pop on Daisuki for free at some point

That Episode 1 & 2 stream was a preview to convince people to buy it, hence the lack of episodes 3 & 4. I don't know if it actually streamed in full in the US.

I don't really understand Sunrise's logic. I hope we get non-import sets at some point.

I still think it's a big shame Haikyuu didn't get a dub - I know sports anime was long seen as a niche area, but it's really started to prove itself recently, with both Haikyuu and Kuroko's Basketball ranking in the NYT Manga Top 10. From what I gather, the Haikyuu anime has sold well in the West too, but you can only imagine how much better it would have sold with a dub two. But I guess at the time Sentai figured it was too much of a risk.

I think it's safe to say we won't get it until at least after the US gets it. The Toonami dubbed run of it only just finished this time last month - so I imagine they'll at least get a release within the next 6 months or so (they got Hunter x Hunter pretty soon after its Toonami run)

But yeah, the question is to see what happens here. Most Viz stuff does usually end up being a Kaze release - so we probably will have to count on them.

I will be importing OPM if Khazi goes anywhere near it.

Kaze already has UK rights. And your US choice is Viz. It's really a question of which arm you want chopped off...

Though, if you're feeling wealthy, Bandai Visual's JP release has English subs, and I believe even for the OVAs (though you should probably check, rather than taking my word for it).

You're right about that. The JP release is excellent, though the lack of a decent but less expensive option for those who like money and/or dubs is a shame. Even ignoring my palpable dislike of Kaze I feel the series would have benefited from a bit more proper marketing and local love than the weird abandonment most of their releases seem to have been getting ever since they went silent on us.

I'm not sure it needs it. OPM is a monolithic beast, especially amongst more casual fans. If Manga can Facebook/Tweet about it, that will probably be enough. However, I would suggest it might very well have benefited from a specific coordinated merchandise push. I certainly wouldn't have been surprised to see it do as well as the AoT merch does amongst the youth.

I'm personally more concerned that the lack of subs/dubs on their French release means missing content (I wouldn't be too surprised if Bandai Visual wanted the English subbed OVAs for themselves), potentially DVD-only or perhaps even no release from Kaze UK.
