The News Thread (for news that does not need a thread)

Seems likely that they'll do a short third season now that this is wrapping up. I just hope it ends well considering the author has been prolonging it forever now.

Gave up on reading Nisekoi ages ago, but I'll probably check out the last chapter in Shonen Jump to see how it ends.

...I miss Double Arts. Still annoyed that it got axed.

The Panzer & Osomatsu train never stops!
Harsh sales for Kiznaiver.

1k for World Trigger? It's better than I was expecting especially for episodes 46-48, but still awful. There's no hope of the show ever coming back. *cries* :(

Still the next volume heralds the "second series", so maybe there'll be an uptick. (There won't be.)

Ouch, they've spent quite a lot of money marketing that too.

I always got the impression Trigger stuff was far, far more popular in the West than Japan. I wonder how much of the money for that series actually came from Crunchyroll, because I wouldn't be surprised if it was a fair amount (especially if they also got home video).

I think it is, adjusting for market size, but the last time I was over there they were ploughing a lot of money into billboards, exhibitions and merchandise promotion (and courting the female audience quite actively as well). It's a bit sad to see the sales so low, though Gundam might just have devoured everyone's cash this week. Maybe.

I'm not so shocked about WT (well, I'm not a huge fan of it like you for one thing!) because the shounen titles which actually sell well are a minority. I mean it's technically outselling One Piece and I don't think that's getting cancelled due to poor sales any time soon, because they don't really expect the shounen demographic to be out buying expensive discs in the first place. It's only the fujoshi hits and nostalgia titles which seem to break out of that pattern.

KIZNAIVER has been tracking poorly for a while. I wonder if the marketing was in response to that. It's a hard sell though, the first couple of episodes aren't great, and the plot synopsis sounds very 'wishy-washy'.

I'm not even shocked by WT's sales figures. It doesn't really follow a lot of the rules recent shounen series have been following (and I think that's perhaps why I like it so much). I suppose the one thing it has in it's favour is that disc sales seem to be consistent, vol 14 sold 337 DVDs and 795 BDs, vol. 15 334 and 768 and vol. 16 339 and 776. If they're making money from other places (TV Ashai were also an investor on the series and Toei seem to trying to push international sales for it, but as far as I can tell it doesn't have a production committee), maybe that will be enough, but I doubt it.

There's also the problem that the 73 episodes they did went through all the available manga (and added a filler arc), so they probably won't be able to build up enough manga for a new series for a while. Still, it's Toei so we have the crappy ONA reboot in a few years to look forward to...

And still no digital. Sorry Vertical, but why are you f***ing around with audio dramas, before you've even cleared Kindle?

As I've said before, physical only is the reading equivalent of DVD-only and it needs to die sooner rather than later...
