The News Thread (for news that does not need a thread)

Yup, can't say I'm that bothered by this one - I had actually cancelled my pre-order for the other version already as I figured my interest in the show was passing at best and I wasn't overly keen on just six episodes per set.

Even if a Warner set comes out and is rubbish quality, at least it'll probably compile the full series in one set and probably be half the price.

Be a shame if we lost Food Wars as out of the three that's probably the one that really deserves a good release. GATE does too, but if I was choosing between them it'd be Food Wars first.

What?! How the hell did Kaze sign a contract that would even allow Warner Bros. to pull **** like that?

I suppose we have to assume Kaze have just lost a tonne of money or Warner Bros. have just brought out the deal. In which case, go **** yourself Warner Bros., if you care enough to buy back rights to titles, you can care enough to not put out sub-par releases....

Yeah, it's certainly pretty weird that they'd let it get to the extent that there were pre-order links on Amazon and everything.

I can only assume that there must have been a clause in the contract that allowed Warner to pull the release? Perhaps they weren't happy with what Kaze were offering? (seems unlikely though considering the amount of 'care' they lavished on Jojos)

I'm assuming Warner Bros. has a clause that allows them to end the licence at any time (the same way Aniplex just 'deleted' some NIS America releases). Certainly no UK distributor will ever work with them again if Kaze had given them any money and then they'd pulled the licence before they could make any money back, and they've probably sent US distributors running.

Thinking about Kaze as a business, is it possible Warner Bros. Japan weren't comfortable working with a direct rival or three? (Kaze being owned by Viz Media Europe, and Viz Media Europe being owned by Shueisha, Shogakukan, and ShoPro.)

This whole thing is a bloody mess.

Still, there is one thing that we all should be glad upon - the Japanese Blu-ray sets have English subtitles.

It may not be the best thing in the world but it's certainly going to be better than crappy video quality, dubtitles and Warner template menus.

Until the second season, when Warner Bros. US realises it wants to release them and demands they pull them...

Well the OVAs didn't have subs and they were pretty important to watch (it adapts Volume 1).

Speaking of other Warner-related titles, what else do they have in Japan? I think Accel World was one of them because that has English subtitles.

Were they Warner Bros. Japan releases or bundled with the manga? I thought it was the later. I've been meaning to watch them but never got round to it.

Which reminds me, I need to buy that AoT volume with the OVA, do we know if the UK is definitely getting it or will I have to import?

Yeah it was bundled with the manga. Still they could've added them to the volumes (they might do that with the BD-Box, I think other franchises have done that).

As for the AoT OVA it's listed on Amazon UK.

Just checked, the ISBN matches between the US and UK, so hopefully it's the same release and we actually do get the OVA (and it's NTSC rather than PAL).

It's international sales are handled by Showgate, who I can't see letting Warner Bros. pull a stunt like that. I think it's only where Warner Bros. is handling international sales that you need be concerned.
