The News Thread (for news that does not need a thread)

The fact there is no title on the spine and the rather big price difference is why I'll be importing the US version myself. I think £40 is a little much myself, I think £30 would be a lot more reasonable considering it's an older show and it isn't very long, maybe £35 at a strech. Maybe that's just me, I don't like steelbooks that much. As you say, I would have much prefered an artbox.

I imagine this release is pretty much catering mainly to hardcore fans who won't mind buying the series again - even so, imagine it will probably still be one of the year's top sellers so far as it's been high on the Amazon pre-order chart for a while.

As someone who also collects steelbooks, I'd have to add, don't discount the extra draw that putting this in a metal pack will have. OK, it's not a steelbook and the price is high compared to a lot of steelbooks but there are a lot of people out there who will want it purely for it's metal case.

It's a reasonable series so might even end up drawing people from the steelbook scene into the anime scene...

Probably worth mentioning that the Blu-rays include the OVA episode (which was not available on DVD); furthermore the DVD version of Elfen Lied was released at a 'high price' (compared to other anime titles at the time) but it was quickly reduced to - at this point - around £18

Unless it gets slotted in just after Xmas the plan to have the first part of Fate UBW out by the end of this year doesn't seem to be happening sadly :( Q1 with the other titles without a release date? (Bar Re-Kan, Love Live 2 and maybe Kamisama 2..)

Also, crikey at that cover art for I Can't Play H...

I thought that too. Needless to say, it's on my Plan To Watch list now :p

Hahaha, I like your honesty.

Looks like Rozen Maiden is DVD only too :-(

No BD in the US yet for Rozen Maiden so it's a given none for the UK (though if it was Anime Limited releasing it it might be a different story)

Been a while since I watched it but that I can't play H cover seems at least a little misleading.

Looks like MVM has done goofed. It would be more wise to release Maid-sama as a complete series set with the English dub than releasing 2 parts subtitle only. I have a feeling we're going to see another 'this show didn't sell well' incident with some of those titles. I can guess they'll be trying to bring out some of those on Blu-ray but remember they didn't receive Blu-ray releases in Australia which may explain why this is the result.

Rozen Maiden Z has a Blu-ray hold-back on Sentai's side due to TBS so there's no surprise it's DVD only over here.

Yup, from what I've seen anything other than proper bonafide hits like Log Horizon sell pretty poorly as MVM two part sets - I imagine partly because people know a complete collection won't be that far off (ie. Arakawa, Shangri La, Chrome Shelled Regios etc)

Yeah with it being 2 part sub-only set when a dub is coming i can't see Maid-sama selling well, which will probably mean knowing MVM that we won't get the dub set at a later date due to the sub-only set under-performing.

In a similar situation, MVM said the 2 part blu-ray release of Accel World sold poorly so they won't do a complete collection which doesn't make much sense to me when as you say most people hold off getting some shows to get a complete set so they'll loose sales there, also they can just stop production of the 2 sets and put all discs into 1 case.

I rarely buy any multi part series unless it's a Aniplex series like Kill la Kill as there won't be a cheap complete set anytime soon or it's super cheap.

MVM really does have a boat load of interesting releases coming up. Didn't realize they had Captain Earth, I'm down for that.

When I read this I thought "pff, how 'crikey' can it really be". Crikey.

Sentai re-released Maid Sama with an English dub back in January, so I'm not sure why MVM would release it sub-only, unless the listing is incorrect.

I've been holding off on Outbreak Company and Maid Sama to see what MVM do, it'll be a while before I'm buying anything anyway but I hope they do release the Blu-rays or I guess I'll just end up importing.

Would be nice if everyone upgraded to Blu-ray soon so we didn't have this divide anymore (I guess it'll happen eventually).

Ultra HD Blu-Ray spec was finalized at the beginning of May to support 4K (alongside other features)

Players are expected by end of year. Soon DVD consumers will be 2 generations behind.

OK the benefits to going to 4K on a lot of anime is questionable but I wouldn't be surprised if more mainstream titles get the 4K treatment.

I don't think the remainder will ever upgrade to BR - they just don't care. Why would the average punter pay more when to them, there's no difference. If you're a working class family struggling to make ends meet, BR means nothing to you - you just want a cheap copy of Frozen on DVD to occupy the kids.

If you go into the average HMV, the BR section is still tiny compared to the DVD section.

Other than feature films anime don't even get 1080p other than as upscales, mainstream or not... 4k isn't going to happen any time soon.
