The News Thread (for news that does not need a thread)

Wow, thrilled about Turn A and ZZ, I have dodgy fansub versions burned onto DVD-Rs that I'd love to drop for stable picture and good subs. I'm so glad we seem to be seeing the light at the end of the tunnel for this Gundam blackout from the last few years.

Now, if only a UK company would get the rights, it would save on the cost of importing :)

Now this is going to be tough. With Rightstuf handling the franchise, their sets generally look good (you know, those chipboard artbox sets like Funimation's but with thin-packs i.e. Utena) and since they're giving Blu-ray a chance at some point I'm torn between US and UK (as I can probably guess that Anime Limited will eventually have the UK rights to Gundam given Manga and MVM can't handle it).

We both know who really won the race :)

It's definitely going to be interesting - having a choice of two different tempting releases is definitely better than the alternative! It would be great if they can share production duties so both sides get the best possible release in terms of discs. Both companies are capable of gorgeous physical releases :)

Sorry Andrew, don't mind us just assuming you're going for the other Gundam titles too even if you haven't actually said so; it's fun to speculate!

We'll definitely be moving into this and I hope to advance things shortly - I'd suggested starting with G no Reconguista but I may step my schedule up now...

Best,

AP

Gundam collections from Anime Limited would be amazing. I intentionally am holding off importing as I figured Andrew would be grabbing them.

I have a feeling RightStuf are just handling distribution in the USA. I worry what prices they are going to charge over there.

Funimation have also licensed Yona of the Dawn (Akatsuki no Yona) which will receive a home release in the future. The series will still air on Crunchyroll.

UPDATE

Bayonetta: Bloody Fate receives an uncut 18 rating from the BBFC - 'strong bloody violence'

I think it's generally much harder and more expensive to get a multi-region blu-ray player - I certainly don't have one, just as ps3, so UK releases of Gundam on Blu would be very welcome indeed!

I'd snap up any UK Gundam releases in a second. Especially stuff like Wing, that could really do with the remastering treatment.

Indeed; that 'Ultimate Edition' of Gundam Wing that BEEZ Entertainment released was terrible; the set overall was ok (nice artbook of the mobile suits etc) but the artwork on the front of the box was horrible and the visual quality of the episodes (jagged lines (interlacing issue?) on screen and out of sync audio) was what was annoying... especially when it was £100 (online listing price).

Fortunately there is a BD Master (or HD Re-master) of Gundam Wing available on Blu-ray in Japan so that would be an awesome set to release; additionally Gundam 00, which was another BEEZ title that looked terrible, was made in (and available in) HD so a BD set of that would be nice as well :D

Of course I'm just wishing for these releases; as Gundam (especially Wing, Seed, Seed Destiny, 00) is my favourite anime franchise.

Eh, I didn't even know there was that sort of set for WIng, I must've have come into the fandom when those sort of Beez releases were OOP.

It says a lot about Anime Limited when I'd heavily consider buying a BD Gundam Wing even though it features my personal worst character in the history of anything, Relana freaking Peacecraft *stab*.

I've only ever seen Gundam Wing, I've never watched anything else regarding Gundam but interested in staring with the franchise again if A/L can get hold of some more rights.

I went to France this summer and was blown away by the amount of manga they sell in supermarkets there. And this was in a smallish town that didn't even have a railway station. It'd be like walking into a mid-sized Sainsburys over here and seeing wall to wall Soul Eater and Bleach.

Hmm, I'd guess that's linked to them having more Anime in general on TV. They have to dub what ever foreign show they pick up so they aren't limited like us to whatever the US churns out. Germany had Sailormoon and Dragon Ball uncut years before either of them surfaced in the UK, I'd suspect it'd be similar in France/Italy too.

All that contributes to it being a bigger thing than in the UK.

What's stopping us from that then?

You are!

There's a significant shortage of Animefreaks in this country. We need at least 100,000 more to get an audience that will warrant such proliferation of manga and anime in the UK. It's incumbent on you to start breeding loads of little animefreaks to fill out that audience. Find a mate and start reproducing, get the little sprogs inculcated on anime at an early age. Play them jpop while in the womb. In fact, more than that, you need a harem, avoid a School Days scenario, but start popping out the l'il animefreaks on a production line!

Go forth and multiply!
