The News Thread (for news that does not need a thread)

Banding I find somewhat annoying. Thankfully even the worst offenders on BD that I've encountered don't even come close to the levels on the likes of Sky Movies HD, so I can tolerate it a certain amount. I'm guessing those are from Funi's Psycho Pass release?

As for whether it affects a purchase? For me it's unlikely to really swing it unless there's a conveniently available superior alternative at a comparable price. Take Rush for example, the UK BD has a couple of really noticeable banding issues compared to the US BD, but it wasn't quite enough to dissuade me from buying the UK BD. However, if hypothetically, the banding on a release was at Sky Movies HD levels, I would seriously reconsider.

I do notice banding (even when it's a title the Internet isn't raging about) and it bothers me. But it would only make me drop a series I was planning on buying if there was a decent alternative from another region.

I skipped the Lain LE because of the imperfect picture, though, because I already own multiple copies of Lain and there's no point in 'upgrading' to something with noticeable flaws.

Yup Ath, those are from the Psycho Pass release, but I just used them as examples. Whilst PP does have some of the worst banding issues I've seen, I was actually talking about another title.
I'm just interested to know whether people are bugged as much by it as I am, especially when part of the issue could be down to low bitrates and not utilizing disc space - and whether that's enough to drive them away from, or devalue what they're willing to pay for a release.

From what I read on Fandom Post, the banding in Psycho Pass the same as the Japanese Blu-ray's (I think, might have been another show).

In all honestly I didn't notice when I was watching PP (probably because I don't know what banding looks like (yeah I know it's stupid) unless someone provides a comparison screenshot).

For me it depends. I would rather not have any banding if possible, but there are a lot of shows where the banding is there but very minimal and only appears on occasions. In this case, a tad annoying but doesn't really bug me too much as it's not always in your face.

The ones that I find annoying are like Psycho Pass because it is in your face and it's there a lot and for long periods. Although annoying, after watching for a bit I adjust to it and the annoyance goes away a little.

Would I buy another release with out the banding, depends. Shows where it's like my first paragraph, probably not unless the price was the same or possibly a fiver more.

Using Psycho Pass as an example. If there was another release with the same content(lossless English and Japanese and the signs song track) but with minimal to no banding and was £20-30 more, I probably would. £100+ probably not.

It would also be show dependent on whether or not I would pay a little more or not.

Does banding put me off buying, not really but that's more to do with the price. I don't think I would have bought Psycho Pass with that banding if it was £150+ though.

Not sure about Psycho Pass but I have read on more than one occasion that the Japanese version of Stains Gate has the same banding. From the couple of screen shots I have seen they also showed this to be the case.

Speaking of Psycho Pass, a BD-Box is being released in October.

Also, Aniplex's Live Show starts soon:

I don't know whether I just don't notice it enough in real-time, or if I'm just too used to it, but it would never stop me buying a show. My motivation for watching anime is not "to see smooth color progression".

The Haruhi BDs are being reissued in Japan by the looks of it.
Season 1 (Which is just a QTec upscale) will be re-released on the 19th of August for 22,680 yen (~£131). Includes 3 BDs and two CDs.
After amazon discounts and such, maybe they're hoping more people who want the BDs will be able to stomach two separate series purchases rather than the whole thing at once.
Eh, it's not like the BD release was that expensive to begin with (and flew off the shelves, relatively speaking). Was more upset with the price of the LE DVDs for the 2009 episodes thinking back on it. ^^;

Blehh. I already have part 2 on order but a box would have been handy to keep things together. Oh well, I don't want to reward them for store-exclusive boxes anyway :(
Are you trying to tell me you don't own any store-exclusive bonus items? :p

But I can't buy this one so I'm jealous!

Banding won't stop me from purchasing a series, but it is irritating. Especially in shows that have bright colors.
I don't tend to notice it that much but there's a series I'm watching at the moment that has it and can be quite distracting.

If it's something that came from the Japanese side and can't be helped, I suppose there's nothing that can be done about it.

Haha, the reaction of the true fan of store exclusives!

Estatic Arts will be closing down at the end of July. Their last days of trading will be at London Hyper Japan.

Hmm, I just found them online too, but I did note they didn't seem to have any future pre-order stuff up. This is the 2nd online store to close recently too iirc
