It's most likely because they have to partner with someone to split the costs. BD authoring for them alone is out of the question.
For example, with Another it turns out that MVM sent the disc art to Sentai, who then actually printed the discs and sent them over.

Another person who used to enjoy the German dub of Bunny and her friends? :D

Yep, I also watched Dragon Ball in German years before it hit the UK (Was not expecting naked Goku). I think I saw some Phantom Thief Jeane aswell as well as something else I don't know the name of.

Just shows how far ahead with Anime in Europe is/was, they are more open to it as they have to dub whatever they import and I'm sure they avoid some US stuff on principle.

I would say the older Blu-ray releases would go OOP first; Broken Blade and Kids on the Slope. The Monogatari series will survive and so will Fate/Zero probably.

Viz said Sailor Moon probably won't be coming out until late fall so to me that means October 2014. Thats still plenty of time to get an announcement from the UK or Australia. Especially since Madman are rumored to be looking into it.

That's insane about the MVM BD's ... gives me more incentive to go out and pick up some shows of there's I don't have on that format yet but still, I wish they had said something about it.

hmmm, do i pick up broken blade and kids on the slope, or another and girls und panzer ? older releases vs more popular ? Hmmmmmm :/

I think it's actually true for most distributors. They're happy just to sell one print run of Blu-rays and DVD, and it's only the rare title that gets a second batch of discs. For Manga and Anime Limited of course, they have the facility to run off a second batch themselves, whereas MVM are constrained by having to work with Hanabee and Sentai and Madman. But I bet that 9 out of 10 Manga Blu-ray titles won't get a second run either.

EDIT: I mean selling out of Mega Title 1 after 4 weeks is incentive enough to press some more discs, but selling out of Not So Mega Title 2 after 24 months (with both being the same number of discs) would make me think twice about pressing more there.

I think it's the same with MVM. If they do insane number on a BD, then they will have the incentive to negotiate for more as they did with Bakemonogatari. It's just they have an extra hoop to jump through first.

At the very least, Fate/Zero's collectors edition is expected to sell out within a month, so if you want that, you're going to need to snap it up.

I might have to pick up the Monogataris once I get paid though.

I wonder if more people would be inclined to buy half seasons of sailor moon if part one of each season came in some kind of artbox?

I mean, even if they were in similar packaging to the Kaze release of Code Geass, that way they wouldn't take up as much room as normal releases as it would be split in to 10 or so parts.

It's this aspect about the UK anime industry that kinda worries me most at the moment - this who'll 'pick it up now, otherwise, you never know...' - whether that be due to limited print runs or in the case of Beez/ADV companies going bust. Know they eventually got reprinted, but look what happened with the Persona 4 volumes last year...

Not every anime fan has cash to splash to every single title released by every company - so it's kinda worrying to think that if you don't pick up certain titles when they first come out, you've probably only got a couple of years' grace period before they go out of print again.

If the the market shifts to digital copies/streaming - these limited print runs will surely become even more emphasised.

Couple years grace is basically how it's always been for Anime though, in fact games are similar (albeit with a better 2nd hand market)

I think the worrying aspect at present is the lower BD runs mean some titles will go OOP quicker than in the past as a DvD run would of been larger. I expect this will change as time goes on but there will be a period of harder to obtain titles.

As you say not everyone has infinite cash, thus it's a good idea to prioritise.

Ah yea, I see where you're coming from. That makes a whole chunk of sense actually.
I was looking at it as, say if .. they sold out entirely of Girls Und Panzer on BD within a year and a half period, would they stop printing them all together even though they may have the license for a few more years ..speaking of which that leads to two questions I've been wondering about for ages that you maybe able to help me with, just so I can gather a better understanding of the industry as a whole : Firstly, When it comes to licenses, are BD & DVD rights separate? would said company pay extra for the right to put something out in BD? & secondly ..with complete collections, do they print more for those? or just use up previous stock that's in a warehouse?

I'm such a derp, sorry.

I feel what I said Is being blown out of proportion a bit. You have to remember that a single print run is around 1 - 2k units (I believe for MVM he said it's usually around 1.5k), and for them I was told BDs only make up for about 20 - 30% of their total sales, and the only exceptions where BD has sold more than DVD are GuPAN and Bakemonogatari, so I doubt anything is going to go OOP anytime soon.

The Garden of Sinners DVD Box is also on a limited print run under Aniplex's instructions (2k units if I remember correctly?), and will be exactly the same as Madman's now OOP release.

If digital streaming picks up to the point it is more profitable than a physical disc we can say bye-bye to them altogether. and it's heading in that direction too. It will be a sad day for me if that happens, but I'm an old git with maybe 18 more years left to live if I'm lucky so it doesn't matter that much to me anyway. If I can live up to the end of the Ah My Goddess manga I'll be ready.

MVM have said before that BD rights are separate (but they now try to acquire both sets).

The UK companies should really put their catalogue titles on streaming sites where rights exist (as I know they do in some cases). It would help judge demand, and provide a legal recourse for people who miss the print run and end up watching Amazon Marketplace and eBay sadly.

DVDs going out of print for a few publishers was definitely a problem here in the past, even ignoring that unfortunate warehouse inferno which torched a ton of stock.

Which is why I get the UK releases as soon as I can and as for the US releases its kinda worrying because of two things

One you want them to get cheaper so you wait til they go down in price
Or
You want to get the series you but don't have the cash right now
Or
Your getting something else first then getting that later

And this is the trouble you don't know what will be out of print until it's too late and I know that from experience

But who knows you might get it second hand from somewhere so that's a plus
