Re: aun podcast: "More people want Free than Sailor Moon"

The sentence that killed anime forever. To Jupiter with every last turncoat in that room.

It's a classic that was badly handled, a few older fans remember its butchered TV run but that's it.

Perhaps the new Anime will prompt someone in the US to re-visit the original, assuming it's not in licence hell.

Interesting podcast from UK Anime Network. Apparently United Publications got told off for selling imported Anime because the lack of BBFC logos (about 10 minutes in) at MCM Comic Con.
Yup. They told me Trading Standards went around the expo hall on friday and told them they were not to sell uncertificated titles.
There was like one or two other stalls with a few imports which they must have missed though, as well as all the obviously fake/dodgy figures and Attack on Titan Nendoroids.
Urgh, the large amount of fake merch was...urgh. Also yeah, I saw a stand selling US DVD/BDs earlier today.

Typical, the BBFC patrolling enforcing the law while the event organisers just allow other vendors to sell fake goods. Good Smile had a stand didn't they? I'm sure they could of pointed out fake Nendos for the organisers. (edit - lol the podcast mentioned this too)

I hope UP1 told them to get off. Is it illegal to sell uncertified stuff?

Judging from the podcast it must be as they had only UK stuff on their stall. I do wonder how it affects their website, unless they are allowed to import/sell for private consumption but not sell openly on the street/stall

What do you mean? It is being revisited. Viz have licensed it for blu ray and are redubbing it uncut.

Or do you mean rerelease the old dub?

ConanThe3rd said:
That's what I meant, the viz re-release

But hey, if people want vapid s' over SM then be it on their heads.

Sorry, I agree that SM blows Free out of the water (pun intended), but my reply was a response to Rosencrantz's comment.

It's illegal to sell them within the UK - not illegal to import from outside.

E.g. OK to order from Amazon.com but not OK if you're at a UK event. I'd need to look into whether it's OK for a UK-registered company, operating inside the UK to do it but my suspicion is it's also not legal.

Not a complaint about UP1 here btw, just an answer to the actual legal question! Also kudos to UP1 for obeying Trading Standards :).

Ah, didn't realise Viz had picked it up to redub. That's what I was hoping could happen.

In that case a UK release is potentially possible depending on if it sells well in the US, and if not fans have the option to import.

Yep, Viz made so many people happy.

So it doesn't make sense that UK companies seem aprehensive about picking it up. Sure it didn't sell well 10 years ago, but that was just the cut dub. The source for this is the 2009 remaster, which is being cleaned up further for blu ray. Viz have said they picked voices for the new dub that could sing so I'm very excited.

I thought the UK companies would be competing for this since SM is considered the queen of anime to DBZ's king.

With this and the rights to Crystal, Viz are set.

Way back when we had analogue satellite I was able to watch the entirety of Sailormoon & the movies uncut in German (I don't speak German but it's easy enough to follow along with)

I'd say the trouble with it is that it's part boys and part girls show. It's magical girl, but has loads of monster of the week filler battles. I'm not surprised it didn't sell well as what audience is it actually trying to connect with?

I enjoyed the tokyopop manga and I keep meaning to pick up the recent re-release, I'm tempted by the Viz DvD/BD, but only because I'm an older fan of the series. DBZ is an easy sell to an audience that didn't grow up with it compared to SM I'm afraid.

If escaflowne is getting a bd i dont see how SM is a big risk, even if it is across 10 boxsets, DB was across 16 ! Also unlike the DB dvds we're getting a good remastering job. It's unfair to compare this release to the bad mvm dvds, which had a terrible master and dub. This time it's going to be uncut. So many classic shows like this, yu yu hakusho, cardcapto sakura and ranma 1/2 are getting US releases but no UK ones :(

Another person who used to enjoy the German dub of Bunny and her friends? :D

There's also the stereotype that shoujo sells badly overall, unless it's an exception like Fruits Basket or Ouran which somehow resonates with the buying crowd. With Sailor Moon being so long and (on this side of the pond) far less well known than the Dragonball saga, it's not that surprising it didn't do so well. The previous cut, dubbed release had no appeal whatsoever to me ^^;

The value gained from buying a cut, dub-only disc is very low to many buyers, so the market is limited to begin with, whereas if I were 10 and enjoying DBZ on TV I'd be blown away by the prospect of dual audio DVDs with uncut footage (I still think they could experiment by rereleasing Pokemon in this way in the west to entice a grown-up fanbase into buying it again).

Anyway, I have zero interest in a Sailor Moon UK release as I've already set my heart on the US BDs. And as I already own all of Sailor Moon on DVD and this is just an upgrade, heck yeah I'd be more excited about a Free! release.

First UK company that picks up the remastered, redubbed old, and the new remake series dub of Sailor Moon gets the wad of my money that's been iching to be spent on them like forever. No pressure.

UP1 has been getting away with it for so long, they mistakenly felt they were a legit outfit, until reality finally lifted their rock. I hope trading standards was round to scope out the bootlegs at the other merchandise tables like one that is well known for getting away with it somewhere in Piccadilly Circus. ~_^

Not excited about the new dub then?
By the way, does your region free player require you to switch blu ray regions manually or does it just do it automatically?

are the sailor moon releases going to be region free ? ( btw, are ranma 1/2, yu yu hakusho and cardcaptor also region b compatible ? )

Some other bits of info from MVM yesterday which people might find interesting:
- MVM Blurays will only be pressed once. Once they're gone, they're gone. (An exception was made in Bakemonogatari's case because it sold so well, and Hanabee agreed to split on a repress.)
- Bakemonogatari made it's advance back within it's first quarter on sale.
- Unsurprisingly Shangri-La was a complete bomb for them, and was apparently picked up to fill a drought period. (Tony said he literally went back to Gonzo and asked what he could license that he didn't already have)

I don't watch dubs at all now there's the option not to, so I'm just in it for the better transfer (and reinstatement of the parts I never had on R1 DVD which I had to buy the R2s for).

I don't have a region free player at all, just several region A players :(

Sailor Moon's Blu-ray region will end up being Region A & 1 only.
Ranma 1/2's Blu-ray region is locked to A only (unless someone actually tested it).
Cardcaptor Sakura's Blu-ray region will also probably end up being Region A & 1 only.

On the more positive side, Yu Yu Hakusho is compatible with UK players (The Classic Line editions that is).

You should keep an eye on these threads to find out what titles are compatible: US Blu-ray and Sentai/Viz titles

Now that's actually quite harsh, holy ****.
