The News Thread (for news that does not need a thread)

Some F/Z BD Comparison Shots based mainly on the first episode, Opening and a bit of the second episodes.
I haven't watched the episode fully so this is pretty much just an initial opinion, but other than the Brightness/contrast issue, Madman/MVM's BDs are a bit better than I expected.
Between this and Durarara!! it also appears that the Aussies are more competent video encoders than the people at Funimation/Sentai.

It does look gorgeous.

Forgive my stupidity, is this a re-do of the TV series Fate/Stay Night, like Brotherhood, or just the story told from a different perspective etc?
It's a re-do of the TV series, however we don't know what path Ufotable are animating exactly, or whether they're just doing an original route.

So in the end, which version should I pick up? The Aniplex release that has the soundtrack and nice sets or the cheap MVM release?

Part of it depends if having a lossy English 192kbps track vs a lossless track bothers you. (Although I'd still very much recommend the japanese dub for a first viewing, the English dub is very good too.)
Aniplex's release obviously has better video, a nicer box, the epic soundtrack and an artbook, but it all comes down to whether you can justify paying the extra £90 per set.
For me it was a no brainer considering how much I love the series and how high it's production values were. If you can afford it, I'd definitely go for the Aniplex set.

Thanks, I'm not that particularly fussed over the English audio especially since Stay Night is out later this year I might as well stick to the original language (like I did with Psycho Pass for the upcoming Season 2). I have some spare cash for the summer but at the moment I'm waiting for the release schedule for both the UK and US for Q3. I'm already got Date A Live, Toradora, Ben-To, Devil is a Part Timer and Senran Kagura: Ninja Flash planned already from the release schedule revealed from Funimation for June/July so if there's nothing else that's really interesting I could pickup another Aniplex set.

Cheers for those screenshots Mangaranga. Just had a quick look and they haven't done too bad. Can see some artifacts in shot 9 on the left of Saber(her left, our right), mainly on her face, shoulder and upper left chest. How noticeable that will be when watching at a normal viewing distance rather than a couple of feet from the monitor, I'll have to wait and see.

Unless they are told to by the Japanese companys, I still don't understand why every company insists on increasing brightness/contrast.

As far as I'm aware, and this is me quoting; "It will be a new story outside of the original work, but is very important and near Fate/Zero in terms of feeling."

MAL has been wrong before, but it's not the only place I've read that. I just can't remember where it was, it could have been ANN.

What I've seen elsewhere also indicates an original route aswell.

Which is probably the best idea, each arc of the visual novel has important aspects and they could do with the freedom to work things in properly. Information I'm seeing around the web is suggesting the original author, Nasu, has either written the new route and/or is overseeing the scenario writer's meetings.

There's definitely a lot of things that Zero nodded at that they can follow up.

Anime Ltd have reached their first stretch goal: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/al ... te-edition
THAT, and there's a new update from Anime Limited!
Project Update #7: Stretch Goal 1 Hit! Onwards, Dear Backers, To Stretch Goal 2!

Well, WELL! Thank you all so much for allowing us to hit the first stretch goal! It's official: you're all getting some pretty amazing, unique, one-of-a-kind, Kickstarter-only, fancy-pants illustration for Patema Inverted's Definitive Edition! WOOOO!! And on a Friday too, which gives me even more of an excuse to have a lovely pint or two tonight :)

So, have I got some news for you? Well, we've got some but not as big of an update as we'd like. We're just beginning to hear some rumblings back from Japan today, so hopefully we can get moving on some extras, add ons and super goodies early next week. Rest assured, we're on it. We aim to have some good news and tempting add-ons for you guys next week but keep an eye out for details and updates as they happen.

For all you Patema Inverted fans in the UK trying to get to one of the Kids' Club screenings of the film: I know quite a few of you are put out over the fact that the Kids' Club screenings don't allow adults in without children present. Unfortunately, we have no control over this policy. We have spoken to and continue to speak to the cinemas regarding adding more screenings that open it up for everyone else, and will continue to push for this where possible. It also helps if you let your local cinema know that you support this and would love to see it!

Don't forget! Patema Inverted is being screened at the BFI next Friday, May 16th in London at 6:30PM. If you're in or around London, that's a great opportunity to see the film!

Once again, we'd just like to say a big THANK YOU to everyone for backing the project and seeing us hit our first stretch goal! Hopefully, we'll be well on our way to the soundtrack stretch goal in the next 23 days :) Please spread the word and the love! If we hit the soundtrack goal, we all win :)

Have a great weekend everyone!

- Kerry

I've had to pull my pledge for Patema Inverted until I can be more certain of my financial situation this month. Having it end just days after MCM London Comic Con was not the wisest of moves xD.

Some of the comments on there....saying it should be on Adult Swim, or they object to the removal of partial nudity of little girls...urgh.

16 - 12 - moderate fantasy violence
17 - 12 - moderate fantasy violence

19 - 12 - moderate gory images
20 - 15 - strong bloody violence
21 - 12 - moderate fantasy violence
22 - 12 - moderate bloody violence, nudity
23 - 15 - strong bloody violence
24 - 15 - strong bloody violence

There are two differences I've noticed so far. One minor, one which will either be minor or major depending on how much of an audiophile you are. The first is that Madman removed the Romanji Subtitles which were displayed on the top part screen (above the english translation) in the OP/ED of each episode, and the second is the Japanese audio which is 24bit PCM @ 2304kbps on Aniplex's release, whilst both tracks are 16bit PCM @ 1536kbps on Madman's discs.

EDIT: Not sure if it was intentional or what, but Madman actually pulled a Funimation with this release. The brightness/contrast have been messed with to the point that it looks like there's a grey filter over the image.
Just rediscovered a bookmark I'd forgotten about:

Are you using Aniplex's Masters or are you compressing it down for 2 discs? Lossy or Lossless English audio?
Same Source master but we are compressing it down to 2 discs as doing an extra disc would make it very costly. English audio will be the same as the US version.

There are a few exceptions but they all seem to do it. I have seen screen shots of Anime Limiteds Cowboy Bebop compared to the Japanese release, and AL version has had the brightness/contrast tweaked. Same goes for the screens I have seen of Welcome to the space show, Sword art online and Deadman wonderland.

Would love to know why they do this.

If it helps, I remember finding this post interesting (part of the outcry about the banding issues with Lain in the US):

An interesting post indeed.

I have to say I found the US set of Fate Zero too dark for my normal setup. However a similar thing happened with my UK Deadman in Wonderland.

The real question to ask would be has any quality been lost? If you can adjust your brightness and contrast to get it back to where it should be perhaps it's just down to differing black level standards.

Rumour alert:
Also today, sources tell us that Funimation is soon to announce the U.S. BD release of Ghost in the Shell: Arise – Borders 1 & 2. They’re also looking at the U.S. release of Cowboy Bebop: The Complete Series as a likely fourth quarter 2014 title on Blu-ray.
