The News Thread (for news that does not need a thread)

I hope for 2 parts for Anime Limiteds KLK set, mainly because spreading it across 4 may see a reduction in the quality of the packaging from the Bebop style packaging to just Amaray with a slipcover etc. If it's 4 sets and they go with the Bebop style packaging then my wallet will be forced to splash the cash!

I trust that Kill la Kill will either be region A-friendly (if the UK version has to match the overseas ones in any way) or significantly cheaper/better than the foreign options to compensate for region B hell.

By which I mean I know full well that it won't, but the current contract negotiation situation in the western anime industry completely annoys me so I'm staying locked away in region A until things improve ^^;

Good news about Mai Mai Miracle!

I think it was beyond obvious that Kill la Kill was going to be released in multiple parts - no new anime that's more than a single cour has had its entirety released at once that I recall other than Lucky Star (and how long ago was that?). Knowing Aniplex though, they will probably split Kill la Kill into four DVD/BD volumes.
Jokes on them, I'm just going to buy it straight off Wakanim for £30 and sidestep all this nonsense.

Incoming Viz Media news:
- Vampire Knight novel is announced. Fleeting Dreams is a collection of short stories.
- Vampire Knight 19th Volume will receive a Limited Edition treatment with an exclusive cover and mini art book. Standard version will also be available.
- Vampire Knight will also get a 2nd Box Set that handles volumes 11-19 (Box Set 1 had volumes 1-10).
- Black Bird will get a complete series box set with all 18 volumes and a mini art book, for October release.
- Yukarism was also announced as a new manga license.

Indeed they also announced some Studio Ghibli content.
- The Art of Princess Mononoke
- Princess Mononoke: The First Story

In case you missed the other Viz Media news from previous posts they also announced:
- Assassination Classroom, Master Keaton and Resident Evil: Marhawa Desire, both as new manga licenses.
- Jaco the Galactic Patrolman was also announced as a new manga license. The series will also cover Dragon Ball Z material that involves Goku's mother who was previously never revealed until now.
- One Piece will get a 2nd Box Set that handles volumes 24-46 also known as the Skypeia & Water 7 arcs, for November release.

And here's the Japanese BD cover for Sword Art Fanservice: Extra Edition.

Fantastic news.

In other words, we could get these re-released on Blu-ray at some point:
- .hack//Quantum
- Another
- Bodacious Space Pirates
- BTOOOM!
- Campione!
- Chobits
- Dusk Maiden of Amnesia
- Ef: A Tale of Memories & Melodies
- Ga-Rei: Zero
- Inu X Boku Secret Service
- Samurai Champloo
- Sankarea (if the re-release has the same regions as the edit ver.)
- Trinity Blood
- We Without Wings

This is good news. Hope Btooom is one, this would save me some cash over getting the US release. I also hope they will release Canaan.

I don't mind Kill la Kill being multiple parts, after all back when I did buy DVD's, they was multiple volumes for the complete series. Plus Kill la Kill is a show I wouldn't mind paying a little extra for.

I'm aiming for 2 parts - we're doing 2 for France just now so I'll need to discuss. My overall thoughts though are:

- Part 1: Box to hold both parts + Part 1
- Part 2: Part 2 + storyboard book

Using same quality of packaging as Cowboy Bebop - waiting on samples or such but should be able to talk a bit more soon. Waiting on the USA to set its schedule first off too.

Best,

AP

Coding Region A causes all sorts of woes due to fears of Japanese counter importation of cheaper versions. I'm trying to find a compromise just now instead by coding it Region B but being allowed to reduce the number of volumes in the release ideally.

Watch this space :)

Kill la Kill being split into only two volumes would be brilliant, but I wouldn't be surprised if Aniplex force four volumes like with MangaUK's Sword Art Online (but then again, MangaUK did get to release of Puella Magi Madoka Magica in a single set). I mean, I'd still buy it if we were forced into four, but obviously I'd prefer less xD.

Manga's release of Madoka was also really heavily compressed. Each disc was only 13gb or something like that.
They may as well have just put it out on one BD50.

Double glad that I invested in the AniplexUSA Limited Editions then.

These are all SD shows, and all upscaled by FUNimation (only SamCham has had a Japanese BD release, and that was using FUNi's BD masters). Manga has said they won't re-release any title on BD if only an upscale is available and MVM probably won't be any different, even with costs dropping.

Actually they did mention SamCham as a possibility, and judging by my Funi Blu-rays, that would be a worthy upgrade over the previous standards converted version we got here.

The second upscale FUNi did for SamCham is supposed to be decent, and was used for a Japanese release (the first upscale they did was universally panned for smearing and loss of detail). I can't see Trinity Blood upscaling well since SD Gonzo shows tend not to (I re-watched my Japanese Kiddy Grade BDs only recently as it happens...). Chobits is an early digital animation so again, may not benefit all that well over a decent DVD encode (and Pioneer were among the best, although the UK release will have suffered from being converted to PAL).

Thought I'd quote the MVM website's message on the matter to comment on it. :3 Saves space opposed to quotes in quotes.

Girls Und Panzer WILL be on Blu Ray... and that's not all.
We're happy to tell Girls und Panzer fans that we've secured the license on Blu Ray and will be releasing the series in the much coveted HD format.

On top of this, we can also confirm that both From the New World and Accel World will also be released on Blu Ray, with more to follow.
This is thanks to a new deal we've struck with our supplier that makes it cheaper for us to support the format, and therefore we can release more titles this way going forward.

Stay tuned over the next few weeks as we update our release schedule :)
I don't have to say more on Girls und Panzer than what I said in my last post, except I'd like them to confirm the OVAs on BD as well.

As for both Accel World and From the New World, I'm very excited about this news, assuring I'll be able to buy it on BD from the UK. I kind of hope they'll be giving those the Fate/Zero treatment (= an artbox), but I don't expect either of them to receive an artbox. So it's looking like I'll be getting both those titles when a complete collection surfaces, assuming both will get a complete collection in the second half of 2015 or 2016.

The "new deal" line makes it sound like they DIDN't have lowered costs until now, like Manga has had since the start of 2013. (Which have come down even more for them by now)

Either way, the final line on both FaceBook and the website post makes it sounds like some more titles will be announced for BD-release this month which is great.

I congratulated Anime Ltd via Twitter already. It's really awesome to see Mai Mai Miracle getting so much support.

And indeed: Disc 1 is 14GB, disc 2 is 16.5GB & disc 3 is 15.6GB.
The interesting thing is that the actual content on disc doesn't seem to look bad at all. It looks actually quite marvelous.
There's a little bit of noticeable banding in the first scene of episode 8 for instance, which I expect to be there in all dark, gradient scenes checking my discs. But I have seen way worse, honestly. In most instances it looks smooth and vivid, maybe a bit soft (but that seems to be a part of the anime). I'm not complaining though. Watching this makes me want to yell to Aniplex to dub the third movie already so I can marathon PMMM.

Either way, I can't afford those way too cool LE Aniplex boxsets from USA, so I'm happy with the edition I own. :3
If anything, being honest about it, I haven't actually ever seen a flawless BD or DVD. (And rarely flawless encodes on the internet)
