The General Conversation Area

If I may interject quickly, I would be careful with your jokes in future – some of the behaviour towards @Neil.T sometimes felt over the line to me, and honestly, the only reason I didn't mention it before now was because I assumed it was an inside joke you were all fine with.

Just be aware that you're in a public forum – what might seem harmless fun to you might come across as bullying to others, and that's obviously not an atmosphere we want to promote here. Jokes and jesting are absolutely fine, of course, and I very much encourage that – just make sure you're not coming across as mean.

Cheers,

Teapot (Honorary Representative of the Ministry of Fun)
You have a valid point there, consider it taken. Whilst on the subject, all jests etc. I have made towards @Neil.T have been intended as harmless fun, if it’s been taken differently I apologise.

Just lost a HDMI port on my TV. So frustrating as despite being a relatively old TV by todays standards I was still perfectly happy with my 2010/11 LG TV. Sure it only had two HDMI ports and I have 4 HDMI things in need of input but I was okay with switching them out. No sensible switch box for me.

Now I know what your thinking, 'Oh it's because you kept switching out cables'. Funny thing is I do that on one port for the PS4, PS3 and MPC, Mutiple times a day with no issues. But the Main port on the TV was Sky and has always been Sky. Very rarely have I ever switched it out and yet thats the port that dies, the one I don't touch.

I have admittedly been thinking about upgrading to a new TV for alittle while now. But it was never high on my agenda. I currently don't have any real use for 4K beyond the PS4 Pro. HDR is far more appealing but again it'd be only for gaming at this point and thats a secondary hobby of mine so I wasn't the least bit desperate for it. I wanted to ideally wait for OLED or QLED to come down to normal prices as they provide a truly astounding leap forward in PQ. But while I could probably last on 1 HDMI port for awhile, especially if I invest in a switch box, I guess i'm going to need to upgrade sooner than I wanted.

Which brings me to this issue. WHY ARE TV's SO ******* BIG NOW!? The LG I have is 32 inches and it's perfectly big enough. Apparently a normal TV in 2018 is 50 inches!?!? I know I sound like a grandpa but what in the actual hell is that about! How did that become the norm. I understand that 4K is only really effective at bigger screen sizes but HDR should work wonders at all sizes so it'd be nice to have a few smaller options. 40 Inches seems to be about as small as you can go which I guess with the thinner frames might actually be not too far off what I have.

Another less frustrating thing but still disappointing is that 3D has been pretty much phased out of all low price range TVs. I understand it's only a novelty but It's not something I've experienced and I figured despite it being a commercial failure in the home it'd still be included just as an extra bullet point on the box but alas that seems to not be the case. PS4 supports the format and I do have a few 3D BDs so I would have liked to have that included too.

What sort of TV's do you lot on here have? am I a 30 year old OAP or does anyone share my views? lol

Mine is a 40" one. It's 4K but one of the earliest models in that it also has 3D (which never gets used.) I inherited it from my parents who had recently replaced the living room one with a slightly bigger 43" 4K one.

As for TV size I think it depends on the size of the room. If I had the space I'd like a bigger TV eventually, but atm mine is the appropriate size for where it's positioned. The one downstairs is also big enough, and we looked at getting 49" but it was a bit too much.

I've got a 55" 4K TV but I normally watch 1080p films through a HD projector on a 100" screen. UHD movies on the 4K TV. These go through an Atmos/DTS-X receiver with 5.1.2 speakers. I've got my old 3D 50" plasma in the bedroom 😀

When it comes to TVs it's bigger the better, but that's me.

my tv is 55", my dads old 4k actually, one of the first 4k models without HDR, it has 3D but so many people use it so less now that I'd gladly swap out 3D to see what the HDR fuss is about. my speakers are quite simular to @Patient-X with two atmos speakers built into the front ones

Mine also doesn't have HDR.
As for speakers I should eventually invest in some though I have little space for them to go...

in other news, I have my specs now

there is a bit of trouble getting used to them though, not as comfortable with the lenses as I'd thought I'd be

oh well, it has been 12 years since I was trying a pair, apparently the prescription is a bit high....

My Atmos speakers are in the ceiling, so that saves room 😉 Have you thought about a soundbar? To me the audio has always been as important as the video. I even had a pro-logic amp back in my VHS/laserdisc days.

I have, though my TV speakers seem to be doing the job for now. It's the next step in my setup.

I second the thought on a sound bar, haven't tried them but taking a look at them they are much better than telly speakers, especially these days where the manufacturers seem to assume you're getting your own speakers. the soundbars are also much cheaper than a full cinema system

A mix of a bigger (30"-ish) television and cramming 11 other "Freeview" SD channels that ITV4 shares into the same space does make Tour De France look really bad (lots of compression artefacts due to motion). D:
