You should totally watch it, just be ready to invest some serious time into it (516 episodes before the timeskip) and use a filler guide to save yourself some time.

Actually only took me a few weeks of December, though I did start from the Pain Assault Arc and skipped the filler aside from the Kakashi anbu arc.

The good thing with the OG series is that most of the filler was after episode 135, Bur with Shippuden it's laced inbetween arcs. However cutting it out leaves a superb series (even if I hate Sasuke and his mopey Dopey face)
