But I also haven't seen Naruto, or Bleach, or Death Note, Black Butler, or any of the other well-known ones that people seem to de-otaku you for if you don't know so much as the main character's pet cat's name...

I've got 2 Narutos from the Manga Force Collection that I'm slowly working through. So I'll get them watched at some point.

I must defend myself though, when I say Pokemon got me into anime, I mean the OLD series, the FIRST EVER ORIGINAL one where Pikachu was an a$$h0l3!

To be fair that's what for me into it I watched that then started on naruto. Now I'm bloody mad on anime...mainly slice of life and romance are my faves but will watch anything

Damn straight, though Shippuden is better imo, and the One Piece anime is great until Dressrosa, at that point the pacing went bad and I started reading the manga instead. Oda is a legend.

Perhaps it's just the way he sits in the earlier series, making him look fat, but he definitely looks different to me, it's just...not the same!

Not that the OG series is bad but the 70 episodes of straight filler don't help. Shippuden just has a much better story and I'm making it a plan to rewatch it each year.

Haha, I remember giving One Piece a go when it was on Toonami, both my sister and I watched it, and neither of us could get into it. I think perhaps it was just different from other anime I had seen in terms of animations style (I think it was Luffy's huge mouth it freaked me out!) XD

You should totally watch it, just be ready to invest some serious time into it (516 episodes before the timeskip) and use a filler guide to save yourself some time.
