The Games You've Finished This Year

This year I ended up finishing with almost the same amount as last year lol.

  1. Atelier Ryza 2: Lost Legends and the Secret Fairy (Switch)
  2. Spider-Man Miles Morales (PS5)
  3. Gunvolt Chronicles: Luminous Avenger IX 2 (Switch)
  4. Pokémon Legends Arceus (Switch)
  5. Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna - The Golden Country (Switch)
  6. Azure Striker Gunvolt 3 (Switch)
  7. Splatoon 3 (Switch)
  8. Bayonetta 3 (Switch)
  9. Pokémon Violet (Switch)
  10. Soul Hackers 2 (PS5)
Still spending most of my time playing handheld games. Got a few others I've been playing and am close to finishing, so 2023 should get off to a good start there. Mainly Sonic Frontiers and Golf Story, but I have Harvestella on the go currently too.

I think my favourite games of 2022 were Atelier Ryza, Bayonetta and the Xenoblade DLC. Soul Hackers 2 was very enjoyable for what it was, but it does get a little bit silly toward the end which undermines some of the earlier bits of the story.

None again!
I did play a lot of Elden Ring, but like with the Soulsbourne games got stuck only this time on multiple bosses and lost the will to grind.

Monark
Fire Emblem: Three Hopes
Star Ocean: The Divine Force
Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII - Reunion
Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero
Xenoblade Chronicles 3

I’m sure there’s others I’ve finished but can’t remember.

Dishonored 2 and Death of the Outsider
Nights of Azure 1+2
Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness
Chrono Cross Radical Dreamers Edition
Final Fantasy Explorers
Devil Survivor Overclocked
Dragon Quest Heroes
Dragon Quest XI
Shadow of the Tomb Raider
Neptunia Virtual Stars
Super Neptunia RPG
Fairy Fencer F: Advent Dark Force
Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne Remaster
No no Kuni II
Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night

A bit late but from what I can remember last year I finished.

Final Fantasy VII Remake (PS4) + Intergrade (PS5)
Persona 4 Golden (Steam)
Pokemon Legends Arceus (Switch)
Pokemon Scarlet (Switch)
Sonic Frontiers (Switch)

Need to get back to Soul Hackers 2 (PS4) and Crisis Core (PS5) which I'd picked up at launch, enjoyed very much of what I have played so far though.

What I can say....crazy year....and I still might finnish Vampire Survivor's and Jusant today.

Anyways. There's various reason's why I ended up beating so many games this year and one of the biggest was July's retro PC game month which added 20+ titles. I almost solely played old PC game's that month and managed to knock one title after another. I'm not going so crazy next year, but I'm planning to do another round next June or July. I'll also try to play less, but longer titles during 2024. There's lot of games I'veen avoiding because of the taunting lenght, but I think I can live with beating less next year :D

Pretty pleased with myself this year since I still hit over 10 games, 12 if we're counting the FF16 DLC (which I personally do). Here's what I finished:

  1. Sonic Frontiers (PS5)
  2. Bayonetta Origins (Switch)
  3. Tales of Arise (PS5)
  4. Sackboy: A Big Adventure (PS5)
  5. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (Switch)
  6. Atelier Marie Remake: The Alchemist of Salburg (Switch)
  7. Final Fantasy 16 (PS5)
  8. Super Mario Wonder (Switch)
  9. Naruto x Boruto Ultimate Ninja Storm Connections (PS5)
  10. Final Fantasy 16: Echoes of the Fallen DLC (PS5)
  11. Super Mario RPG (Switch)
  12. Sonic Superstars (Switch)
My favourite was probably Zelda closely followed by Final Fantasy. Been a good year for games. :)

Not a hundred percent sure if I remember all the games I finished in 2023 but I figured it might be fun to rank the ones I do remember from worst (or least favourite as I usually don’t finish bad games and even the lowest ranked on this list is still very fun to play) to best, also I probably won’t go deep into my thoughts regarding all of them as me finishing some of them is hardly recent but if I remember beating the game then it’ll go on the list.

10. Ghosts and Goblins Resurrection: I have a real love/hate relationship with the GnG franchise, on one hand I find most of them incredibly fun to play, on the other hand it’s not good for my health as they are all so soul crushingly hard, this one is probably the worst offender since the first game, with the double jump MIA and several cheap deaths that will frequently occur, in spite of all this, I still couldn’t stop playing it until I got the platinum trophy, which mercifully doesn’t require finishing on legend mode, which I tried until the fourth stage but had to lower it to knight, it’s still a good game but it’s still my least favourite that I finished because of the difficulty, granted you can lower it but going lower than knight will trivialise the game because it’s built around the one hit armour loss system like all the other games.

Edit: I don’t know why but I keep mistakenly calling the new GnG game Ultimate Ghosts and Goblins, anyway that’s not the one here, it’s Ghosts and Goblins Resurrection, ultimate was a PSP title, in any case, it’s fixed now.

9. Hades: I’ll admit that I’m not a big fan of roguelikes but I played Returnal the year before and really liked that one so I figured I’d give the genre another go and…. Hades is good for a bit but I was forcing myself to get to the end knowing that I had to beat the game 10 times, the game is still fun enough for a while but the endgame grind is hardly insignificant.

8. Death’s Door: This game is pretty good overall I got it for Christmas 2022 so I don’t remember exactly what I thought of it but I remember liking it as a one off game that I probably wouldn’t play again but I enjoyed my time with it.

7. Dungeons of Aether: DoA was an excellent game, with a great soundtrack and a really fun combat system………. for the first half hour, afterwards it becomes an increasingly frustrating exercise in praying that you get the right dice rolls because the enemy will have an advantage over you at all times, you are locked into a constant game of blocking and rerolling until either you get very lucky with the dice rolls or you get very unlucky and can’t even defend yourself, all while the enemy regenerates stamina like it’s no big deal, this could have been fixed by not having the enemy regenerate stamina every turn and also it would have been nice if there were more side activities in the main game as it’s actually pretty linear, while being a dungeon crawler, I’m still looking forward to Fleet’s fighter debut in Rivals 2 but this isn’t the best start.

6. Star Ocean the Divine Force: The Star Ocean games haven’t had the best run overall, a lot of them just drag on and on until I just give up, with that said, the latest entry actually maintains a good length to it, doesn’t overstay it’s welcome and is a pretty solid JRPG, I gave this one a review in my own rate the last game thread so that’s probably a better place to get my opinion, as it is far fresher in my mind there but honestly it’s one of the better ones.

5. Spark the Electric Jester 1: Not the best 2D Soniclike on this list but still a pretty good game, though the next one is better as it takes the series in a direction that helps it stand out from the other Soniclike.

4. Spark the Electric Jester 2: Unlike a certain other Soniclike, which I rank very highly on this list, Spark 2 decided to have a go at 3D Sonic instead and it’s a really fun, if short, game which is well worth checking out for 3D Sonic fans, the third one is shaping up to be even better but I didn’t quite get around to finishing that one sadly so it can’t make the list like the first two.

3. Castlevania Circle of the Moon: Or just Castlevania as I picked the EU version on the Advance Collection which I picked up on the PSN sale and I’m glad I did because it’s a really fun time, it’s basically symphony of the lite, offering more of what made Symphony of the Night so good such as the interconnected world, the various unlockables and… yeah it’s a metroidvania but there’s a reason why the genre has stood the test of time, it just works, also this was the last game I finished in 2023.

2. Freedom Planet 2: A game that I personally think is one of the best I played this year, Freedom Planet 2 is a refinement on the first game in so many ways, it takes the formula that 2D Sonic started and perfects it, the level design is top tier, the soundtrack, I love the soundtrack, it’s got so many great tracks to listen to, the story is an improvement over the first game’s plot but I’ll admit that it’s not perfect, I was maybe too enthusiastic giving the game a 10 on the rate the last game thread, there’s just enough small issues to make it a 9 really but that’s still an excellent score and it would be the best game I finished in 2023…. but as it turns out.

1. God of War Ragnarok: I nearly didn’t include this because I assumed I finished it in the tail end of 2022, I was wrong, it was finished by me in 2023 and what a game, what a glorious game, by now seemingly everyone has probably played this near masterpiece to completion but it’s no surprise, it is a refinement on the already stellar GOW 2018, the gameplay is at least as fun to play as before, the story is honestly the very best in the series, there is so many meaningful secrets to discover, including an entire new area that can be missed, also I loved that one type of collectible was a bunch of references to other Sony franchises that were interwoven into the GOW lore so well that you could overlook it if you’re not paying attention, because last year had Elden Ring, this couldn’t be GOTY 2022 but by thunder, it is the best game I finished this year, the only thing that makes it’s top spot a little debatable in my mind is the Jotunheim chapter but everything else about this game is just so good that it deserves a top spot of sorts so here we are, the best game I finished in 2023.

So that’s my gaming experience in 2023, I didn’t beat as many games as I used to, with real life getting in the way and me having to rewrite the script for my own game until I’m happy with it, only to find that it’s not good for gameplay so I need to start again but I digress, I hope I remembered them all but a year is a long time to remember everything so there may be a game I’ve forgotten but this was generally my gaming experience in 2023.

None again!
I did play a lot of Elden Ring, but like with the Soulsbourne games got stuck only this time on multiple bosses and lost the will to grind.
LOL. Will probably be the same this year too, although I might actually finish it, maybe! I didn't get stuck this time just stopped because I didn't have the time and haven't got back to it yet.
Next year might be different if Rockstar stick to the promise made in the first GTA VI trailer!

In 2022 I finished 31 games, so my next goal was finishing 40 games. I ended up finishing 30. Pretty terrible in my opinion, considering there's been a lot of opportunities where I could have played more.

I've compiled all of what I've written on this forum via my blog across the Part 1 & Part 2 posts.

In terms of how I felt about the completed titles, there's a few interesting picks. We have a few JRPGs that I had bought back in 2018 that I finally played with Shining Resonance Refrain and Tales of Zestiria, both of which I really enjoyed. There's also more Resident Evil games played with Resident Evil 2 Remake, Resident Evil 3 Remake and Resident Evil 4 Remake as well as a few others that were remastered on PlayStation 4. I enjoyed the remakes whilst the remastered games were fine.

The biggest achievement for myself is finishing off the Hyperdimension Neptunia games on Vita, with the four spin-off titles finally completed including Hyperdevotion Noire which took 75+ hours just for the Platinum. Hot Wheels Unleashed gets a shoutout as this had online trophies that I managed to sort out, but the game was very fun too. I also played two Cave bullet hell games on Nintendo Switch which were not planned to be played immediately but was entertained.

I also played new games Final Fantasy XVI and Marvel's Spider-Man 2, both were pretty solid titles. Also played were 9 classic PlayStation games via PlayStation 5 which were all good fun, including experiencing the Syphon Filter trilogy, the original Ape Escape and the first Twisted Metal for the first time.

Overall, it's not a bad batch but I definitely could have done better and it's been impacted due to getting ill here and there, work getting in the way and my One Piece re-read which definitely impacted the final few months of the year.

Backlog status:
  • 2017 [06 total]: 3 PlayStation 3 games, 1 PlayStation 4 game, and 2 PlayStation Vita games.
  • 2018 [08 total]: 3 PlayStation 3 games, 4 PlayStation 4 games, and 1 PlayStation Vita game.
  • 2019 [24 total]: 2 PlayStation 3 games, and 22 PlayStation 4 games.
  • 2020 [11 total]: 11 PlayStation 4 games.
  • 2021 [32 total]: 2 Nintendo Switch games, 5 PlayStation 3 games, 24 PlayStation 4 games, and 1 PlayStation 5 game.
  • 2022 [57 total]: 10 Nintendo Switch games, 2 PlayStation Classic games, 35 PlayStation 4 games, and 10 PlayStation 5 games.
  • 2023 [91 total]: 33 Nintendo Switch games, 7 PlayStation Classic games, 6 PlayStation 3 games, 15 PlayStation 4 games, and 30 PlayStation 5 games.
Yes this list has grown a lot, but don't worry as a lot of the Nintendo Switch additions are games that are much shorter in length (about 1-10 hours for many of them). Some titles have been shuffled around for instance Muv Luv games were removed from the Vita backlog since a Switch version is incoming, and Ys IX has moved from PS4 backlog to PS5 backlog. Chaos;Child may also be moved from the PS4 backlog to the Switch version when I eventually pick up the Chaos;Head Noah collection.

I think my goal for 2024 will be to beat my current record which is about 38 so I'll put the target to 40 once again! That should be more realistic than before. I wanted to do 52 in previous years, but due to anime and work that wasn't possible, unless the games were shorter in length.

*I also ended up perusing the new update for the Definitive Edition for VC/SA, and ended up more or less beating them both again.

Finally got around to playing through the core God of War entries and Remedy Games, which had been on the backlog for a while. Also managed to get through some 2024 titles from Atlus and Sega and a number of shorter titles that took less than 10 hours to finish.

2025 should be a good year if the Switch 2 has a solid launch line-up, and I’m looking forward to the next Yakuza spin-off too.

Winning a run on Balatro sort of counts, right? Otherwise none yet again! Looked back and the last AAA game I finished was Persona 5, the original not Royal!

Oddly enough I managed to finish the exact same number of games as last year, lol. Quite a few are backlog titles as opposed to things that came out in 2024. I have been buying a lot of new titles, but not so much finishing them...

  1. Final Fantasy 7 Remake (PS5)
  2. Final Fantasy 7 Remake: Intergrade (PS5)
  3. Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown (Switch)
  4. Hi-Fi Rush (PS5)
  5. Ghost of Tsushima (PS5)
  6. Ghost of Tsushima: Iki Island (PS5)
  7. Cat Quest 3 (Switch)
  8. Final Fantasy 16: The Rising Tide (PS5)
  9. Astro Bot (PS5)
  10. Bakeru (Switch)
  11. Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door (Switch)
  12. The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom (Switch)
I was really happy to finish 7Remake, maybe next year I'll play Rebirth finally lol. I think of all the things I finished Astrobot and Ghost of Tsushima are the highlights though, I really enjoyed both games and Ghost especially I didn't expect to as it's not usually the kind of game I play.

I didn't finish to much this year but Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth being a huge standout title for me more than made up for it.

  • Pokemon Scarlet: The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero - Epilogue: Mochi Mayhem (DLC) (Switch)
  • Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (PS5)
  • Final Fantasy XVI: The Rising Tide (DLC) (PS5)
  • Ratchet & Clank (2016) (PS4)
  • Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters (PSP via PS5)
  • Sonic x Shadow Generations + Movie Pack (PS5)
I did play a lot of Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero! but as I'm still yet to beat the other characters stories as well as the what if's and unlock Goku Black I don't count it as finishing it but as I did beat Goku's story I have seen the credits roll at least once so I wanted to mention it at least.

I also got the default ending in Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid: Burst Forth!! Choro-gon Breath but not the true ending so I didn't count this either but once again I have seen the credits roll once at least.

So throughout 2024 I aimed to complete 40 or so games, and I failed once again! Work was so bad that I lost hundreds of hours of my personal time which impacted both my video game backlog and anime watch as well.

I did manage to play a good number of titles, reaching a total of 30 games at the very last moment. You can read my overall thoughts for each one over on my blog (Part 1, Part 2).

In January I finished Quake Remastered, Quake II Remastered and MushimeSama. Both Quake games also include their expansions so you could argue multiple games were completed here, but I kept it to a single package each. Quake II 64 was also included in the playthrough for Quake II's completion as well as a Platinum trophy! For MushimeSama, because its an arcade game the completion here is playing through all of the modes with various characters.

In February I finished Nioh 2 Remastered and Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade. Nioh 2 was soley focused on the base game's content because the path to the DLC expansions was pretty terrible game design (you have to replay the entire game on a harder mode to make the DLC progression more accessible). For Final Fantasy VII Remake's revisit we have both the base game and the Intermission DLC expansion.

In March I finished Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. This was a mammoth of a game with 90+ hours playtime and most of the side content completed alongside its main story. I really enjoyed my time and was one of the best experiences I had in years.

In April I finished Puppeteer, Stranglehold and Final Fantasy VIII Remastered. Both Puppeteer and Stranglehold were attempts to play two different games at the exact same time but it kinda backfired a bit, however they were sorted within a short timeframe. I did use a walkthrough to assist me with Final Fantasy VIII due to its sneaky difficulty setup so I couldn't treat it like a traditional JRPG experience.

I took a break in May and continued in June where I finished Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin, The Hong Kong Massacre and RUINER. Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin is a similar vein to Nioh 2 where I also only focused on the base game's content because the expansion has a similar entry curve. The latter two were shorter games though one of them gave me nausea due to repeating the same moment hundreds of times at a rapid rate due to its difficulty.

In July I finished One Piece: Unlimited World Red and One-Punch Man: A Hero Nobody Knows. Both were anime games from Bandai Namco with the latter being one of the biggest surprises I had for a low budget game in a while, very enjoyable time.

In August I finished My Hero Academia: One's Justice, Spec Ops: The Line and Ys IX: Monstrum Nox. Spec Ops was a classic experience for me as I played a lot of games back in the seventh gen era and its aged pretty well. Ys IX was a lot of fun and also kept the classic feel that Falcom games were known for.

In September I finished Secret of Mana (2018) and Astro Bot. Despite its visual look, Secret of Mana was a lot of fun and worth checking out. And Astro Bot is once again another contender for having one of the best experiences I had in gaming, short but sweet.

Started in October but continued into November I finished Metaphor: ReFantazio. Of the three games I played that were released in 2024, this one was my favourite. I enjoyed the improvements it had on the Persona/SMT formula, combined with a great cast of characters, an interesting story and villain and a unique but wonderful soundtrack. Yeah the time limit concept did put me off at times from immediately continuing where I left off but it was rewarding working my way through it at the same time.

In December I finished Toy Story 2: Buzz Lightyear to the Rescue!, Twisted Metal 2, Everybody's Golf 2, TimeSplitters, Super Stardust Portable, Pinball Heroes, Killzone: Liberation, LocoRoco Midnight Carnival, Akai Katana Shin and Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time. This was a rapid one like 2023's completion. This month mostly centered on shorter games with 3 of them from the original PlayStation, 4 from the PlayStation Portable and 1 from PlayStation 2. There were plans to play TimeSplitters 2 & 3 but my body wasn't feeling right, don't know if its nausea or not but plans were shelved for the time being. I did end the year on Sly Cooper to end on a high note.

Additional notes from this completion:
  1. 8 games were purchased in 2024, 9 games in 2023, 4 games in 2022, 3 games in 2021, 1 game in 2019, and 5 games were not purchased but played via PlayStation Plus. For comparison with 2023's line-up that was 14 in 2023, 9 in 2022, 1 in 2020, and 6 in 2018.
  2. 17 games from PlayStation 5 (8 of which are considered as 'Classics' titles), 7 from PlayStation 4, 4 from PlayStation 3, and 2 from Nintendo Switch. For comparison with 2023's line-up that had 16 games from PlayStation 5 (9 of which 'Classics'), 8 from PlayStation 4, 4 from PlayStation Vita, and 2 from Nintendo Switch.
  3. 13 were Western developed games and 17 were Japanese games. In 2023 this was 7 Western games and 23 Japanese games.
  4. 3 games were released in 2024 (Astro Bot, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth & Metaphor: ReFantazio). In 2023 we had 3 games as well (Final Fantasy XVI, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 & Resident Evil 4 Remake).
Backlog status:
  • 2017 [5 total]: 3 PS3 games, 1 PS4 game, and 1 PS Vita game.
  • 2018 [7 total]: 3 PS3 games, 3 PS4 games, and 1 PS Vita game.
  • 2019 [22 total]: 1 PS3 game, and 21 PS4 games.
  • 2020 [10 total]: 10 PS4 games.
  • 2021 [29 total]: 2 Nintendo Switch games, 4 PS3 games, 22 PS4 games, and 1 PS5 game.
  • 2022 [53 total]: 10 Nintendo Switch games, 1 PS Classic game, 34 PS4 games, and 8 PS5 games.
  • 2023 [99 total]: 52 Nintendo Switch games, 4 PS Classic games, 4 PS3 games, 13 PS4 games, and 26 PS5 games.
  • 2024 [113 total]: 83 Nintendo Switch games, 1 PS Classic game, 4 PS3 games, 4 PS4 games, and 21 PS5 games.
A good chunk of the Switch games are older retro titles that have fairly short playtimes.
