Summer 2015 Legal Anime Streaming Thread

I'd say Gangsta will probably end up on Viewster for us. Crunchyroll list the publisher for their French stream as Anime Limited.

If Anime Ltd. licensed the French-language version to Crunchyroll, why wouldn't they bundle the English-language version with it for the UK & Ireland? It makes no sense to negotiate with two different sites, when both of them serve all the territories in question and are more than capable of hosting two different versions. Also, if Viewster has the rights why would they be sitting on the announcements? I don't think they have a panel at Hyper-Japan or anything, so they won't be saving the announcement for that.

But "Anime Limited" is weird, the French company generally goes by "@Anime" or "All the Anime", so perhaps the deal was brokered by the UK arm or something.

Ah well, silver lining.

I hear Chaos Dragon is the season's biggest disappointment, so we should probably be thankful FUNi have saved us from that.
When you go from Urobucher!Magus to Urobucher!NotDevilHomura then you done goofed and you need to sit in the corner to think about what you did.

However, it's based on a tabletop RPG game they all played together, so I have no clue why anybody was expecting to be good...
That's exactly why.

I thought the first episode was borderline fine, the character designs are nice enough but there was some ropey 3D going on and probably the most medium overall voice cast performance from anything I've watched this season. Comparison's to Arslan will not be favorable, though.

On the rare occasions I have observed somebody else playing RPGs, it's not the narrative that's interesting, it's the thought process and interactions between the players that are interesting, and they obviously won't translate to a scripted anime series.

Without having seen it, based entirely on what I've heard, I think it would have been more interesting for them to video the actual RPG game they played and subtitle it. It certainly would have given us an interesting insight into the way the minds of the players involve work.

You don't observe dramatizations of people playing RPGs, though, do you. Multiple classic series have been spawned in a similar manner, Baldur's Gate, Record of Lodoss War, etc.

I have not seen any of those but on paper it sounds like a dreadful idea, unless everybody is exceptionally good at the game and they don't try and adhere too closely to it.

Well, would you not normally assume that great creative writers could be good players of table top RPGs?

I agree they could be good players of table top RPGs, but it depends on their familiarity with the game, whether they go into it with a serious attitude and whether they can actually achieve their objectives without running around like headless chicken.

However, Dan Harmon is a great creative writer, the attempts at RPG playing on his Harmontown podcast (often with other talented writers) invariably devolve into ridiculous farce, perhaps because they're not taking it at all seriously. So it would be wrong to assume that just because somebody is a creative writer that they are automatically a good RPG player.

No, I agree there's no need to assume it's always true. But I think it's reasonable to assume it might be true, and be excited to see if that is the case.

I've yet to hear anything unequivocally positive about the show. It's all "it's not as bad as everyone's saying" or something similar to that, hardly a glowing endorsement. However, should it stream over here, I will definitely be giving it a look, even if it's just to laugh at.

That's interesting. Is iTunes a bit like Netflix in that licenses often come up and are renewed shortly afterwards, or are those shows likely gone for good?

This looks like it's related to Starz/Manga - when Starz sold Manga, new shows stopped being added, so it was probably only a matter of time til stuff started getting removed. Still a shame though.

Just had a quick look, the common link between all of the titles remaining seems to be that Manga Entertainment also had/holds US rights to them. Perhaps it's a case of the UK deal expiring, but the US deal remaining.

I get the impression download to own is very difficult to pull off or simply isn't worth it, as Anime Limited were planning to release Seraph of the End in download to own format, but it hasn't been mentioned since.

I still find it odd they're able to sell Macross digitally, but can't put out a physical release any more, especially given how notoriously messed up the rights issues are around Macross.

Ahh, that makes sense. But yeah, a real shame.

Ignore this topic

What confuses me is apparently 2wei Hertz is based on the second half of the 2wei manga. So if a fourth season happens it would be called Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya 3wei.
3rei in fact (from the german drei, as 2wei is a corruption of zwei)

That makes it completely clear, actually - it is the Starz Digital people at who handle distribution of all that stuff (as well as Nozomi titles) to iTunes and the Playstation Store etc. Starz have retained the rights to all the Manga licenses, but the FUNimation titles are all licensed to Manga UK so they no longer have access to them, or requires re-negotiation.
