Rate the Last Anime You Watched Out of 10

Finally finished Gosick

Enjoyed the series for the most part, characters were fairly well done and the story was decent enough. Can't really say I enjoyed the ending though. I can't be doing with the sudden twist of visceral sadness to a convenient happy ending. It felt very similar to Angel Beats in that regard; with all hope seeming lost only for everything to conveniently fall into place. It would have been so much more powerful if the happy ending had been saved for a dvd extra.

Visually, the series was okay. Can't really say much given Crunchy's 480p stream.

Overall I'd give it 7/10. Enjoyable, and I'd watch it again. If/when it gets a new licensor and appears on DVD/BD, I'll be definitely be purchasing it.

@Joshawott and MrLaserSharkKH i agree i feel the anime series was rushed and a load of stuff was unexplained so yeah i agree it should be remade. im sure the manga is good but the anime was unacceptable rushed, unexplained stuff, why and how and there was a lot of of those in it

this series is really interesting its a series that focuses on a bird that if you drink its blood you'll get eternal life but the episodes them self are in mini series with something to do with the series with different characters each time. but the series can be really heart wrenching at times but its a really really good series.

the animation has a astro boy look with a lil modern day animation but the animation was beautiful and the stories was really great.

it is a nice series tho.

Blood-C - 8/10

Well, despite some of the negativity I heard before going in, and also my own feelings on the Blood film, I actually genuinely enjoyed this.

It's a series thats deeply in the Madoka vein of 'Dark Contempory Fantasy', in the sense that everything starts of light and fluffy, with a little slapstick humour, building this nice little world, before starting to slowly slip the rug from under your feet and then getting much darker and violent towards the end.

Being a japanese series as well, don't expect a happy ending here (or actually even a complete ending, this feeds into Blood-C: Last Dark, the film coming later this year), nor a plot that is fed to you 100% linearly, with aspects of the plot being hinted earlier than you necessarily realise, and also through short 'lucid dream' segments, and in essence a large part of this series is mind games, although on who's part and on whom I won't say so as not to spoil anything for anyone who decides to go and watch.

As is perhaps unsurprising, Nana Mizuki's ED, Junketsu Paradox is perhaps one of the best I've heard in recent shows I've watched.

Arguably some of the fights, especially the early ones, feel drawn out with little tension, but this is also improved later in the show, perhaps to tie with the change in the series' mood and change of pace, before the final fights which are far more claustrophobic than some of the earlier choreography, although I do think perhaps this is a weak spot of the series, compared to say some of the more fluid fights from say Shikabane Hime. Arguably part of this could also be down to my own personal dislike of some of the monster designs.

I can see why fans of violent anime who went in expecting something similar to the film (I haven't seen the preceeding Blood+ anime, but I understand this is a reboot so I don't think you need to) might be dissapointed, and have switched off after the first 2/3 episodes where this show seems to share more with school romance dramas with occasional action segments than anything else, but if you're the sort of person who enjoys that element, vampires, or dark fantasy, then there are definately things to enjoy about the series, especially if you let it run it's full course.


I'm quite looking forward to that film now!
 
Ghost in the Shell (1995)

God! i can't put into words how much this movie bothered me. I watched this on Netflix and deliberately watched the original over 2.0 cause i wanna see green but despite it looking great, the actual plot and soundtrack almost made me barf. No offense to Kenji Kawai but his music sounds like an infant messing around with a xylophone compared to Yoko Kanno's masterful score. I'm not sure if its just me but i was almost falling asleep during the movie and had to re-watch it to remind myself what happened and the plot while vaguely interesting is the type of thing that i cant stand in my entertainment in general. The major basically only vaguely has a character besides staring blankly into the sky and spouting crap that sounds philosophical but to me just doesn't really make sense when i try to think about it in my fragile 18 year old mind. Everyone one else is basically how they are in SAC except without any depth (its a movie so i'll give it a break there). Then theres the puppet master. not neally an interesting character to me and the end when the major becomes a kusanagi/project whatever combined thing that is where i draw the line. i gave it a bit of a break but having a movie end like that isn't really a good thing in my book. i respect oshii but like what miyazaki has become for me i don't like having another persons ideals thrown into my face and continuously being shoved into my mouth. i know what he was going for but the movie just didn't work for me the same way the nutty professor movies didn't (those movies left me emotionally scared). to surmise it was all cool until... well... i just don't like seeing a character with two personalities either merging or fighting for control in any way. it scares and bothers me in a very uncomfortable way. and i don't care about the "what makes us human" or "what is individuality" crap either. have that in a movie and i wont like it period.

On the other hand however i f*cking love stand alone complex because i love the laughing man story and how it unfolds and the tachikoma are the most interesting characters i've seen on screen in a long time. oh and saito and bato are cool too.

I'm only half trolling with the 6.5 but it was a wierdass viewing experience and i only enjoyed 5 minutes of it :wink: (Its the bit with guns and shooting)

GITS movie is a freakin fantastic film how could you not like it. GITS was one of the first animes to revolutionise the anime we watch to day.
and the music is beautiful how can you not like it.

i know its your opinion and such but i really think your looking over it. this series is up there along akira its a good movie.

I can see why people love it and i can appreciate that but i personally don't care much for it and most of oshii's work in general. I prefer the way the universe is portrayed in Stand Alone Complex is all.
 
@daichi383 ok fare enough to be honest i like all the gits movies and series. but not the last movie SSS it was more of a long episode then a movie and the reason is that the first 2 movie had different styles for some of the characters. the 1995 movie was great, innocence didn't match the its predecessor but it was good to watch id say it was 3/4 as good but not fantastic ( my opinion ) but SSS was like if the creators didn't give a rats ass and thought * F*** it give it the series look and make the story

These bits did leave me a bit :? . Though I can certainly understand the score and bent of your review, as if your not keen on sombre philosophical musings wrapped up in the package of cyber punk thrillers, then it's probably not going to be that enjoyable. Though, with that said, I'm not usually fond of them either, but I do like this movie. As far as philosophical sci fi/cyber punk anime go, I'd say this is one of the better ones.

Yeah... Miyazaki and his environmental messages kinda piss me off a bit and as for the other bit... ok that was worded a bit wierdly but i guess what i meant there was i dont particularly like seeing... how do i put it... you know when a character gets taken over by like the venom symbiot or something and they are like "noo i cant control me own body and ****" and the two just like fight fo control until they are like we are venom. i dont like it when that happens cause it makes me fell uncomfortable :? Also watching fat and not fat eddy murphy flopping about foightin for control creeped me out when i was a kid and left me emotionally scarred. :oops:
 
lol, yeah I kinda know what you mean about that bit in Nutty Prof. But that was more to do with the visuals and the fact I was a kid. I don't find the actual concept particularly disturbing, but then there are plenty of other concepts I do find disturbing, so hey.

I've never really felt Miyazaki was overly preachy, though. I mean, something like mononoke is actually incredibly balanced. And I never felt he was really shoving anything down my throat in any of his films. You could argue that the references in Ponyo were maybe a bit less subtle than usual, but it's hardly preachy.

That concept whether visual or not still bothers a lot so i tend to avoid stories like that but then oshii barfed it onto my face and i was choking in it.

"Oh god not Ponyo" well that was one of many reasons i didnt like ponyo overall but the most obvious reason i hated ponyo was the first half was great and the second was ****. :P

I get where you're coming from, I actually don't dislike the movie which is why I own it on BD, but one of my other friends I lent it to to try and stimulate interest also found it rather hard to get into and ended up not finishing it.

I may have to offer him the series at somepoint and see whether he reacts similarly to you in enjoying that more.
 
Ergo Proxy

A really great show, nothing like what I expected it to be (a procedural futuristic detective show). I've heard people say they just don't care about the characters, but I thoroughly enjoyed the likes of Pino, Re-L and Raul.

Great soundtrack and an often awe inspiring style, even though the vast majority of it is brown and grim-dark.

I will definitely watch this again, even though the mystery behind what was going on was one of the main reasons I enjoyed this so much, as the characters.

Witch Hunter Robin

I really enjoyed the series and well worth being a blind buy :) The storyline was very fascinating, and the soundtrack was quite good. Out of the charactes, Robin has to my favourite. And I really liked the budgie in one of episodes <3

Definitely a show I can rewatch.

Hellsing Ultimate Volumes 1-4

Went into HMV with the intention of buying Arriety but walked out with hellsing ulrimate volumes 1-4 and bleach series 3 :roll: I really love the way ryoji nakamori's designs are animated. incredibly stylish action and a great dub on top of that. the plot is suspect so far but it looks so cool the plot doesnt matter. Yet another series i didn't like when i was younger that i now love.
