Hajime no Ippo: Champion('s?) Road - 8/10
It started like a Rocky movie...which is a good thing. Instead of jumping right into the continuation of the story, the best part of the Ippo vs. Sendo fight - the best and final fight of the first series - was shown. It got me pumped.
The film was pretty good when it dealt with the cast away from the boxing ring and not so good when the focus was on the boxing side. I liked the IppoxKumi scenes - they were cute/funny because Ippo couldn't say the 'L' word - and the scenes involving Ippo and the rest of the boxing gang were funny as always.
As for the boxing side, it failed because the rival Ippo had to face was boring - he was a doctor for crying out loud! Ippo got beaten to a pulp and then, on the verge of defeat, simply walked up to the doctor and gave him some quality lovin', knocking him down and winning. I found myself wishing he'd done it sooner because it was so bloody predictable. For the main (and only) fight of a movie, it wasn't great.
Still a good film, though. The fight wasn't horrible and there weren't too many newbie flashbacks (the leaf catching flashback irked me, mind you).
Hajime no Ippo: New Challenger - 9.5/10 (Episodes 1-8 )
My main complaints about the first series are as follows:
1: The lack of time spent on fights not involving Ippo.
2: The animation.
Right from the go, this second series started by reintroducing Miyata, setting him up for a title fight and getting it underway by the end of the first episode. It ended in the forth - lasting a hell of a lot longer than any fights not involving Ippo did in S1 - and, right after that, ANOTHER title fight got attention, the second once again not involving Ippo, the fighter getting the attention this time being Date. The first fight was wonderful, one of the best in the series, and the second was also quite good.
As for the visuals, everything is far more detailed because it's in HD. The animation has been better early on, the Miyata fight not having much in the way of loops and flowing really well. It looks great, all in all.
So, my two issues with the first season are no longer issues. Even better, I'm getting a 'serious business' vibe that I rarely felt during the first season because the focus was then on the story starting. Right now it's major fight after major fight, and Ippo even had a training session with the featherweight world champ in between!
I do, however, agree with OMGWAFFLES with regards to the pacing. I haven't read the manga but just going on the pacing difference between it and the first season I can see it's different. So far there has been near to no buffer between the fights, with very little of the comedy that was in S1. Kumi hasn't even appeared outside of a visualization yet - Ippo's 'girlfriend'!
Talking of Kumi, I believe her voice actress has changed. If so, that sucks because I loved the sweet voice she used to have. At least all of the other characters have the same voices.
And, finally, as for the music, I wasn't too fond of the original soundtrack, the openings and a few tracks aside. The music in the second season hasn't been great but it hasn't been bad either. I'll need to watch more before I can judge it, or listen to the soundtrack when it's put on the net.
