House of Five Leaves

This was really a nice and charming show. A quality story, interesting characters, a peculiar pace (a bit quiet, in contrast to what happens)... I can't complain on anything. Or better, I can complain on the visuals: the encoding by Beez was far from perfect, a lot of defects here and there.
Thanks to everyone that wrote good comments about this show and thanks to the users (can't remember who) that pointed out the offer on Amazon. I think I would have totally overlooked this series.

Akira

I remember when I watched the VHS with some friends about 20 years ago. After few minutes our jaws were floored, we didn't think something similar could exist: we were used to anime series mostly written for children (the most "adult" stuff was Fist of the North Star), never had the chance to see a movie with such great animation and with adult themes. The motorcycle battle simply kicked our asses.
Finally I decided to buy the BD, so this was the first time I watched this movie in high definition and with original audio (if you watch it dubbed you don't appreciate the labial sync). I feared to be disappointed, but this movie is even better than how I remembered. Great story, great visuals, great audio, everything is superb from start to finish. A total classic for me, on the top with Castle of Cagliostro.
I wish I had the chance to watch it in a cinema, but unfortunately here in Italy there aren't all the screenings you get in the UK.

DA FAQ?!?
this has got to be the most insane anime i've ever seen in my life! The action, the character designs, the animation EVERYTHING was madness! And because of this its full of life and is definately original.

The only bad things i haveto say is that its story was so hard to follow due to all the crazy **** happening, and the ending was out of nowhere. It just......ended.

Overall a fun anime movie. Although not for everyone.

Kaleido Star

Pleasantly surprised by this series. Good, light, entertaining shojo, with nice touches of drama throughout. I really liked some of the decisions they took plotwise, ones which I thought were quite brave: them losing Kaleido Stage to Yuri, or Layla's injury after doing the Legendary Manuever which made the end of Season 1 quite bittersweet. Season 2 brought Leon and May in and they provided a nice pair of rivals for Sora and fuelled the drama more than sufficiently. A couple of really touching moments are sprinkled throughout the show too. I was disappointed that there was never any play on the romance angle; Ken never gets round to confessing and personally, early in Season 1, I thought it was going to play out a love triangle with Sora/Ken/Yuri, but unfortunately that never came to pass.

Got any examples of the dodgy encode? I've watched disc 1 so far, and I had no problems with the image quality. The same can't be said for audio though, and the general quality of authoring is questionable...

the series
surprisingly good, the stoey in this series is pretty good and the main female lead as a a good story background so does the male lead the go about fighting these monsters from a different dimension but the story is mostly centered around our heroes.
most of the characters are likeable and the blu-ray view if fantastic and yes it has loads of ecchi but funny the story is loads better then the ecchi but i like the ecchi too.

iv read abit of the manga too and its pretty good too

Katanagatari

Words fail to put across how much i enjoyed this series. The double length episodes really helped create an epic journey across Japan with Togame and Shichika and made the build up to the amazing finale all the better. I for one never felt the show fell in to the trap of being "fight of the week" even though in its essence Thats what the show is, but it did everything so well and the episodes were so varied that i never lost interest.

Exceptional dialogue, great action, beautiful art, animation and score, and a cast of characters i won't long forget. For me this show is as close to perfect as it gets.

A Letter to Momo-Finally got round to seeing this and it is as good as i expected and then some, while Hiroyuki Okiura is a massive name within the anime scene as one of japans best animators and has worked of so many great series, this is only his second movie he has directed his first being Jin-Roh:The Wolf Brigade.A letter to Momo is simply one of the finest and most charming anime movies you will ever see,the movie is based around the two central characters who are mother and daughter,Ikuko and Momo who after the tragic death of Momo,s father they decide to leave the city and both move to Ikuko,s childhood home,a small remote island named Shio. The core of the story is about an unfinished letter Momo,s father started writing before he died after a argument he had with Momo, all that is written on the letter is Dear Momo,as Momo tries to come to terms with her fathers passing and confused over the letter, strange things start to happen as she starts hearing voices and noises and things going missing around the house, things are not what they seem, with out going to deep into the story, don,t want to spoil it for anyone,we find out there are three Yokai living in her house who seem to have a connection with Momo and her father and maybe hold the key to the secret behind the letter, the friendship between Momo and the three yokai is simply fantastic and bring about some of the movies most funniest and heartwarming scenes, also seeing Momo and her mother both struggle with there loss and both trying to put on a brave face for each other pulls on the old heartstrings as we see there bond grow stronger as the movie progresses.Simply put this is a movie that you will want to watch over and over again and in my opinion is already a classic.9/10

Bakemonogatari

Well, it was a very entertaining and stylish show for sure. The direction and stylisation of the show were very strong and confident, and worked well when combined with the slightly neurotic type of banter that Araragi and his friends often get into. The dialogue was pretty good on the whole, and it's good to see a show that places good dialogue over action sequences. The individual plots felt like they all had enough time given to them (though the Snake one felt a tad brief) and worked pretty well into the overall picture. However, with that said, it did start to feel like it was just pulling spiritually troubled young girls out of a hat to throw at Araragi, so he could have more (often sexually objectified) females to fawn over him (steering worringly close to "Harem" at times, I felt, though thankfully never close enough to really bug me). Especially as the show makes no attempt to hide the fact that all the various females fit neatly into some of the favourite otaku character categories. While the characters all have somewhat interesting back stories, most are only touched on quite fleetingly, and I felt that the only character that really had a compelling level of depth and complexity was Senjogahara. Araragi himself is an agreeable enough bloke (aside from sexually assaulting a child spirit, and lifting up another young girl's skirt for absolutely no reason in a very bizzare scene), but he's pretty much a cardboard cut out of any virgin do-gooder who wins over every female he comes across with his kind heart, just like you'll find in a million other anime. Maybe that's not entirely fair though, as he does have some interesting aspects to him (like his relationship with spirits-in particular the vampire that bit him) and is probably more likeable than many other similar kinds of male lead.

On the whole though, it's a very fun and stylish show

Puella Magi Madoka Magica

9/10

What a fantastically, tightly made show. I was not expecting it to live up to the hype but I loved it, every aspect of it. A thoruoghly engaging and gripping story, interesting characters, a fine score and it looks so wonderful and flows with energy (as you expect from SHAFT/Shinbo), it's just an absolute feast for the senses. I eagerly look forward to the release of the films over here, hopefully.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica

Ok, i'll be honest, i watched 4 episodes last night, and then got up at 7am this morning and watched the remaining 8 episodes in two sittings either side of a shower. I don't know whether the show itself hooked me, or the fact I was expecting some amazing stuff from the show and wanted to get to that stuff quickly.

I felt the show was a slow burner, and it was not until episode 4 that I got invested in what was actually going on.

Admittedly, this is a fine show, but I honestly wish i'd gone in to it not knowing that it would go against the usual tropes of a Magical Girl show because then I might've been more surprised and thought better of the show.

A likable cast of characters, some great music and a very good plot that I could not predict. I look forward to the third movie so I can see just what the hell was up with that ending.

Asura
Initially, the new art style was quite off putting for me, but I soon got used to it, and I have to say that it really gave the film an edge in its portrayal of the gloomy landscapes and battered and bruised skin that was such a huge part of the movie.

The plot itself was enjoyable, and I never got the feeling that I knew what was going to happen beyond the next scene, which made for a great watch - full of suspense. None of the characters felt cliched, which was another breath of fresh air. Kinya Kitaōji's VA work as the monk was great, really forceful and the moment when the monk cuts his own arm off was very powerful.

Wolf Children
This was a great movie. Halfway through, I thought it could have been one of the best standalone feature films that I've seen; sadly the slightly lackluster ending took a bit of the shine off it for me.
Some of the sequences were absolutely breathtaking, and so beautiful that they brought a tear to my eye. The scene with Hana running in the snow with the children was one, Ame's education about the forest was another lovely moment.

Ookami's death and Hana's reaction was an amazingly powerful scene. Even thinking back to it now gives me a feeling like being punched in the stomach!

The titular wolf children were predictably adorable, Yuki in particular, as the mischievous yet angelic bundle of energy. Her antics generated plenty of laughs.

Sadly the ending felt a little telegraphed to me when Sohei said "A wolf did it", it seemed obvious what would happen between him and Yuki. Hana and Ame's development felt a bit off, too. One minute Ame is promising to not go into the forest as he sees how upset Hana is, then he suddenly becomes silent and unresponsive. When Hana chased after him, the ending with him rescuing her after a fall became all too predictable.

All in all, this was a great family film, with amazing visual sequences and a well-woven story that suffers from frayed edges towards the end. It was still a blast to watch, and I can't fault it's ability to tug at the heartstrings.

Tiger and Bunny: The Beginning
As a T&B newbie I wasn't really sure what to expect from this - I'd read a lot of posts by people that said they were underwhelmed by it, so I was worried I might be put off the series before I'd even watched any of it.

Thankfully this wasn't the case - I really, really enjoyed the movie. Perhaps it's because I hadn't seen any of the series beforehand, but the characters and their interactions were hilarious, over-the-top and just fun. After the previous two films played on tender emotions, this was a real barnstormer for just sitting back and enjoying. The story wasn't particularly complicated, which allowed the jokes and parodies to take center stage when they needed to. I'm already looking forward to watching the series to see more of the heroes' trials and tribulations!

I do think the film went on for maybe ten to fifteen minutes too long - some of the final battle's chase scenes could have been shaved off, in my opinion.

Nonetheless this was an extremely fun introduction to the series for me, and I'll definitely pick up part one when it comes out next year - if the movie was designed to convert people who hadn't dipped into T&B already, it's certainly worked on me!

Natsume's Book of Friends seasons 1+2-A totally charming and beautiful series, reminded me a lot of Ushio and Tora but more grown up and sincere,it had the prefect blend of humour and drama and character development and you really care for all the characters who all have there own story to tell, each episode kept me totally captivated and there was no filler, cant wait to see season 3 and 4.A damn fine series and one of the best i,ve seen in awhile.9/10.

Shinkai tries to copy Miyazaki, succeeds and it's better than Ghibli's recent crap.
Good adventure movie, think Mononoke-hime spliced with Laputa.

Tiger and Bunny
Awesome, if noticeable where episode breaks went.

Tales of Vesperia
Not half as bad as I was worried it would be, and watchable. Doesn't force the cameos from the main cast in, or insist on having all of them.

One of the worst films I have ever seen. Stopped laughing at it after about 3 mins in. Then the pity and illness (this film is disgusting) set in. Acting unimaginably bad, plot ridiculous (and get more so progressively), animation bloody disgraceful in parts and the lead is insufferable.

Gintama
awesome OP/ED skits, nice action flick with tons of deus ex machina.

Incest is nothing new in anime and normally I'm not that bothered by it in a series, but I think just because of how serious their "love" was treated and, perhaps moreso, the age difference really made this series quite disgusting. I personally think the best moment in the show was when Chidori tells Koshiro how disgusting and vile he is and Koshiro agreeing that he hates himself for it. Had the series went down the route of Koshiro being deeply guilty and tormented over the whole thing before eventually leaving and perhaps even killing himself then it may have made for at least a more interesting watch.

Outside the incest angle though, there's not much else going on in this show, no characters to really get invested in, no other plotlines, nothing else to entertain us.

True Tears

I was enjoying this, I really was. It's packed full of romantic melodrama, just the way I like it, but I hate it when an edning just ruins things. Shinichiro chooses the wrong girl, simple as. Hiromi and her "quiet girl" act just came across as cold and distant to me, she was insufferable at times. I absolutely loved Noe on the other hand, giving her some off screen "friends" doesn't constitute a happy ending for me. She's the one the show was supposed to be about; she can't cry, for God's sake! He's supposed to find a way to bring her tears back, that's the point of this show.

I still enjoyed it overall, but in situations like this I'd rather no choice was made than the wrong one.
