House of Five Leaves 9/10

Nothing like what I imagined it would be. I absolutely adored this series especially the artwork, soundtrack and the characters. I wish there was more, but the storyline was perfectly paced within the 12 episodes and expertly rounded off.

Just an amazing slice of anime.

Working!! S2 - 8/10

Better than the first series by virtue of the awesome Aoi Yamada being present from the get-go (she joined half-way through S1). The droopy-eyed one is on fine form, annoying the rest of the cast (and charming me) with her laziness and odd behaviour, while the introduction of her equally strange brother and a couple of Kyoko's ex-gang pals freshens things up a bit and takes screen time away from the less interesting characters who dominated S1. Thumbs up, as usual, for A1's luvverly visuals.

Strike Witches S2 - 6/10

I'd forgotten how cheesy this show was. It's all "powaa of friendship" stuff and everyone smiling like goons all the time and oh-so predictable characterisation. When, in the opening moments of an episode, character A admonishes character B for her less than appropriate attire, you just KNOW that character B will end up redeeming herself in the eyes of character A before the episode's out. And the plot... is there a plot? I can't say I noticed. And yet despite all that, Strike Witches is an enjoyable watch. The battle sequences are dynamically staged and well animated, the characters are a likeable bunch, and yeah, the top quality fanservice doesn't hurt either.

Jigoku Sensei Nube(Hell Teacher Nube). This is a fantastic series,a supernatural comedy set in Domori Elementary and centers around the class 5-3 who,s teacher is Nueno Meisuke also known as Nube who is a exorcist and has a demon hand due to the fact he sealed the demon in his hand and can give him super powers and strength to protect the school and its student from the supernatural forces that haunt the school, its a hell of a lot of fun and there is plenty of tongue-in-cheek humour, action and a excellent cast of characters, fans of Haunted Junction will love this series.I,ve still got the movies and ova,s to watch, but for now i,ll give the tv series a highly recommended 9/10.

A quick recap of the films I saw at SLA yesterday:

After School Midnighters

6/10

Better than what I thought, it's decent, light entertainment.

K-ON! The Movie

8/10

Warm and fluffy, like being inside a cloud made of hugs. Extremely funny and quite touching with the song for Azusa.

Berserk: The Egg Of The King

8/10

'I LOVE BLOOD AND VIOLENCE!'...But damn it I wanted more, it felt so short. Coming out of it I heard someone compare it to the 1st LOTR film and I'd agree with that; it's there more as establishment and a taster of the huge stuff to come in the next film.

It was the last day of SLA today :( But I still got to see some good films :)

Tiger & Bunny: The Beginning

7/10

It does a decent job of recapping the start of the series as well as adding in some new bits, which I liked, mainly because they included Rock Bison. Finally we got to see him and Tiger hanging out being pals like they should be, also Bison should take his shirt off more often...not that I'm into that  I meant as a running gag, no really, I did! The bad guy was bit lame though.

I'm actually wondering if anyone has an answer (or theory) to this question: Who the hell is that one girl who keeps showing up in the background of the series and in the film too? She's got red hair and wears a scarf, she's everywhere! I noticed it while watching the series and am now convinced that in the next film it's going to turn out that she's the true leader of Ouroboros.

Anime Mirai Project

6/10

A mixed bag of stuff. The first short, Juju the Weightless Dugong, was quite cute and funny. I didn't care for the bullying or pig warrior shorts really. The best was by far Production I.G.'s Li'l Spider Girl. Absolutely loved the ending of that.

Blood-C: The Last Dark

8/10

I watched the first episode of Blood-C when it first aired and I didn't like it, I didn't watch the rest of the show, so I went into this having missed most of the plot and with low expectations. But I was really surprised by it, I thought it was excellent, the action in particular was very good. Plus, it had boobs in it, I was certainly not expecting boobs from this, surprise boobs always earns more points with me. I think I'll be picking up the series and this film when they get released.

gurren lagann movies 1 and 2

OMG they are so cool they are like a retelling of the series but in movie form.

these are all the edits that was taken out before the final production of the series and to be honest i think they made the right decisions to take out and these scenes, im not saying there bad but i think the series had more emotion with the deaths in the series i got to say that it was awesome to see what could of been in the series but like i said the series was spot on and i think it would of made the series * i cant think of a word to describe it* i mean there was 1 or 2 scene id liked to of seen in the seriesin the movie Kittan Bachika dies and after they beat the anti spirals they show us his sisters crying over his death but in the series they dont show us that like i said the creators knew what they was doing.

Mushi-shi

5/10

26 episodes is a real stretch for this series. There's no overarching plot and while a number of the stories in the episodes can be considered interesting they never go beyond that. They're interesting ideas that could be told in 2-3 minutes, instead they're dragged out over 20 with no sense of drama, or anything else for that matter. If this had been much shorter, at least half the length, I would probably look on it a bit more favourably.

K-On movie - 8/10

I was really impressed with the animation quality, the accuracy of the scenarios and I kinda like the songs.

That said, it is a silly slice of life show. If you're not a fan of slice of life, this is definitely for you (According to a friend: "I wanted to find something good to talk about it, but it's crap")

After our podcast with Jonathan Clements, I've been paying attention to hands and on K-on, I noticed how well made it is, as at several points they make it quite believable that the girls are really playing.

Berserk - The egg of the king
9/10
It's too damn short!

JoJo's Bizzare Adventure: the animation (Eps 1, 2)
Oh my sweet baby christmas. That was pure distilled awesome, and that OP! That's the standard upon which all OP shall be judged from now on, either they will be as good as JoJo's op or just not good.
FABULOUS out of 10

Phoenix Wright (The Live Action Movie)
Yes. That was a Movie based on the first Phoenix Wright game, and that comes with all that suggests. Mike needs to have people freak the hell out a lot more in any potential sequel though. Mia needed to emote more too

Tiger and Bunny: the beginning.
I really, REALLY don't know. I came in expecting to get to Jake at the very least (that being when T&B actually became a team) but it felt more like a Shonen Jump movie that had the first bit of the series tacked on than an actual movie.

Shiki

Thoroughly enjoyed this anime, and the last half dozen episodes or so were just terrific. A very interesting story and some great characters.

It's surprising how I went from despising the Shiki earlier in the show for what they were doing to the village, to despising the villagers equally as much, in fact, even more so. It really is a good commentary on how people can become monsters too, even when they think they are doing the right thing, some of the extermination of the Shiki was painful to watch.

Roujin-Z (Blu-ray version)

9/10

Firstly the film itself is great in my opinion, sort of a dark comedy, though not too dark, but touches on some serious issues of the elderly, and the comedy is generally subtle, though as the plot unfolds and as things start to get out of hand it can be less subtle (but still good) - I'm not sure I'm the best person at describing things :p
Basically its humorous but with a strong message too, also gets surprisingly action packed as it unfolds and the animation is fantastic.

You can really tell Katsuhiro Otomo was involved in this film, and is visually reminiscent of Akira in some ways, especially towards the finale, especially those scenes as the machine is out of control and all the wires merge with everything it touches - probably not much of a spoiler, but I think its a nice visual surprise for anyone who hasn't seen it before and is familiar with Akira.

As for the Blu-ray, I was amazed how much better it was than my dvd version, it seems to be a complete remaster, everything is completely clear, you can see so much more detail, the dvd version was fairly blurred like it was sourced from a vhs version or something, I'd definitely recommend the blu-ray version over the dvd any day, and if you already own it and like the film, its well worth the upgrade in my opinion.

Ya, Roujin Z is a great film. The Blu-ray is such a massive improvement over the old CPM DVD that it was like watching the film for the first time.

Nisemonogatari - 8/10

Koyomi's harem expands to include both his little sisters. Oh, Japan! I can see why this series is generally less well regarded than Bakemonogatari; an awful lot of time is spent on fanservice at the expense of plot. But it is epic fanservice, legendary fanservice, and I'm a shameless pervert, and for those reasons I'm okay with the show's balance of elements.

Shinbo's visuals are at their most abstract; the snappy back-and-forth, pun-laden dialogue remains hugely entertaining; and the many sight gags are hilarious. The good/evil, real/fake philosophising even gives the more intellectual viewer something to chew on. I suppose my one complaint also applies to Bakemonogatari: the show is weaker when the best character (Senjougahara) is ushered off-stage. It something that happens far too often, though Niseomono does partially compensate with Karen, force of awesome that she is.

PS: OP3 rivals Bakemono's Renai Circulation in the so-sugary-sweet-it'll-give-you-a-cavity stakes.

Birdy the Mighty Decode 02
I really, REALLY wanted to like it but it came up far too short. We have a brilliant first half with the "Who's murdering the criminals?" idea only for the second half to crash into a wall the moment they shoo the clowns away. The ending was a big disappointment, there were a number of moments where they could have tied it and I would have been happy, but instead, the story just sort of lingers in the air like a fart in an elevator.

5 out of 10.

Blue Drop

4/10

Why are people blushing, like all the time? It's probably meant to be cute and endearing seeing these girls do that...but not when they're doing it every other shot you see of them. It just gets annoying and it becomes rarer for them to not be blushing than actually blushing.

Not sure who I cared for less out of the main cast as they all got quite annoying at times, I'd probably go for Michiko for the whole play thing. She takes it SUPER serious and says how important it is and it's going to go down in the history books so it has to be good. I hate to tell you this, but it's a school play; no one cares and no one will remember it. I couldn't quite fathom why the aliens decided to start fighting among themselves :? . The Master Commander just decides to start attacking Mari and Hagino, because she defends her, and so they are now enemies...I guess. It actually makes less sense when they try to give some sort of explanation behnd everything later, revealing the "truth" behind the big incident. The thing is no one was really looking into the "truth" before hand, no one was close to finding anything out. Mari certainly didn't know anything as the only survivor so why try to kill her? All that does is make everyone else suspicious. They could have just left it alone and then launched the invasion without having people from within their own ranks turn on them.

Sengoku Basara

I have to say that I truly didn't like this. While the animation was good, as is the soundtrack, it's let down by the plot and worst of all the dialouge, in particular Date Masamune. Now, I know that it's not meant to be realistic, but given that the characters are real historical figures it just feels wrong. It's worse when Date suddenly says things that you know the real Date would never have said like "Let's party!" or "You rock!", but it's even worse when watching it in subtitles and you hear him in the original Japanese language transmission saying those lines in English. It just makes me cringe.

Score: 3 / 10
