I have many Ikea Billy bookshelves. They're pretty sturdy once built and the shelves don't bend under stress nearly as badly as Argos ones I've had. The "dark wood effect" ones have a bit more of a natural/old look about them. The nicest old-looking bookshelves are always made from the real thing, but it tends to come at a significant premium.ilmaestro said:Is that this? Looks a bit better than the Argos ones I have for most of mine. Still looks a bit too "new", though. I want some bookshelves that look "old". :-/Shiroi Hane said:I went for Ikea Billy with the extension units on top:
I'm guessing that's real Victorian architecture, the time of grand avenues when space was there to be wasted. My old flat had ceilings at least 9ft high. Better than the cancerous mock Georgian shoeboxes which rapidly infect every available brownfield site today.Joshawott said:Wait Shiroi Hane, how tall is your room?!

It's not tidy any more - I took that while still moving in before they were filled up, and that was a few years ago now too... I have three of those wide ones and one of the smaller ones (on the left). I also have a Benno CD/DVD unit stuffed with games, and a CD unit that was here when we moved in with actual CDs in it. And an old bookcase mounted on the other wall with Dr Who and other paperbacks, and some old shelves next to that with misc books, and a cupboard with kiddy books I didn't want to get rid of...animefreak17 said:Very nice I like it nice and tidy how many is there

The only problem I have is that the back, which are hardboard tacked on, tend to pop out and it is impossible to get them back on from the front. White is the cheapest (and some I also got reduced as they were slightly damaged in places that don't show).ayase said:I have many Ikea Billy bookshelves. My dream is a room filled with those bookshelves on wheels with the big handles on the side.FourthLion said:@ilmaestro, my place isn't very big really (eugh London rent) but I live by myself so there's no one to stop me filling the entire apartment with shelving and hoarding books/anime/video games/CDs/whatever else. If I'm completely honest not all of my books have made it to the shelving anyway, there are a few still boxed up under the stairs...
I can't remember to be honest ^^;My roof is pretty high too, I've been wondering whether I should get those extension units. How do they attach on?
Hmm, this sounds intriguing indeed. Might have to take a look when I'm off work next week.ayase said:I have many Ikea Billy bookshelves. Pff, 50% off? Paupers and their "sale items". (But seriously, I would love a bunch of things like that. The ones that can slide close together and be pulled out on wheels that Shiroi mentions are pretty cool, but far too modern an invention to be truly awesome). The nicest old-looking bookshelves are always made from the real thing, but it tends to come at a significant premium.
Probably because I've only just moved stuff into it, so I haven't had a chance to make it messy yet.ilmaestro said:Josh's room looks so clean!
