Incidentally I thoroughly agree that spoilers should be clearly marked. Even for an older series like Eva it's unreasonable to assume everyone has seen it.

I agree absolutely. I didn't see Eva until last year and I certainly was not aware of how it ended. Spoilers so, so, so awful and people really ought to make an effort to avoid using them.
