UK Anime Distributor MVM Entertainment Discussion Thread

Re: [UK Anime Distributor] MVM Entertainment Discussion Thre

I think it's generally positive. At least I can wear my Batman T-shirts in public and talk about Batman these days. On the other hand, maybe that's not positive for people around me.

I guess there are risks associated with becoming more "mainstream" but I think the reality doesn't tend to be as bad as people fear. I wouldn't say games are mainstream exactly but they're at least more commonly known and accepted and great games are still being made.

Re: [UK Anime Distributor] MVM Entertainment Discussion Thre

I dunno, the majority of normal people have a tendency to ruin everything, they've been ruining human society since the advent of democracy and in the last few years they've gone about merrily ruining the internet with their social media. Now they're hard at work trying to making comics and games more acceptable and accessible to normal people. Whether that ruins them, I suppose only time will tell.

If anything, we need to make all the nice things harder to access and less appealing to outsiders so we can keep them good.

Ha, yes... Yes, you got me.

Satire.

Why do you think I watch so much moe anime even though I loath it? Because I'm some kind of weirdo who considers two dimensional girls superior to three dimensional women? No, no. It's because no matter how hard you try, it will never be accepted by the masses. At best, girl talk and relationship dilemmas are only suitable for entertaining young girls, not grown men. So I'll never have to worry about the production committee trying to appeal to the majority.
Now this. This is good satire.

Anyone know the form factor for a lull in the sea? Some of the images I've seen make the box look DVD height, and Blu-Rays in DVD size boxes is one of my pet peeves.

I don't think we know yet - it'll depend on how big that art book is I guess.

Look on the bright side, BD size, DVD size, it's all better than Darker than Black's A4 size! :D

Same as the NIS release as far as I'm aware - 4 DVD cases (3 for each Blu-ray disc, 1 for OST) and A4 Hardcover Artbook (should be the size of 1 DVD case). As for size, similar to Chunibyo Season 1 CE from Sentai.

I read through all of that just to discover that I'm a Clueless Loser. Thanks.

I generally see the ultimate goal as being to achieve Tolerance and Freedom. As in, you're free to do what you want as long as you're not hurting anyone and people are tolerant enough not to victimise you for it. Or to put it another way, I'm looking forward to the day I can read Lolicon Hentai Manga on the train without being arrested and/or beaten up.

I am planning on buying the whole of the monogatari series on blu ray from you guys (thanks so much for giving it to me in a comp, it really paid off it seems) and I was wondering when we should suspect hanamonogatari and tsukimonogatari? I just checked the AoA and MVM dates of koimonogatari and they where only a month apart.

Someone here asked about that at MCM London and IIRC they said they hadn't discussed anything with Aniplex yet. Mind you, this was a couple of months ago now, things might have changed, but that was the last I heard. They also said Monogatari was a great seller, so I'd definitely expect it soon.

It's up to Hanabee's schedule. MVM and Hanabee have shared the authoring for their Monogatari releases.

So far Hanamonogatari isn't dated on Hanabee's end. Of course MVM don't have the rights to Hana and Tsuki yet but they will since Monogatari sells for them.

Since both the Australian release and the US collector's edition of No Game No Life includes the soundtrack is there a chance yours will as well?

MVM Entertainment Funnily enough we're looking into it right now! We're planning on having the soundtracks, along with some other bits.

Hey guys, can I ask why you seem to be releasing Maid-Sama as Sub only when a Dub was released earlier this year?

MVM Entertainment The dub was only released on BD, and at the moment only DVD is available to us. We are hoping once we come to doing a full collection, we'll be able to release with the dub on hopefully both formats.

If you are ever looking at older classic anime to release in the UK then I highly recommend Record of Lodoss War OVA series. It never had a UK release and the US DVDs are hard to find nowadays. Keep up the good work MVM!

MVM Entertainment We get asked and mentioned about this one a lot. We have looked into it but I believe there's issues with licensing rights, expired etc etc. Basically it makes it slightly harder to deal with. We have plenty lined up for the time being but it is one we look up again when asked about it.

I wonder why MVM are restricted to DVD only for Maid-Sama. On the US end it has been out for a while and on both DVD and Blu-ray, the Japanese end should be similar and with the added bonus of a different Blu-ray region. I guess either MVM aren't too sure and want to test the waters with a DVD release (which seems more likely to push people into importing) or whoever they're dealing with is a bit of a pain.

Good news on the NGNL soundtrack if they manage it.

I think testing the waters with a DVD release is a pretty poor idea. I mean, you'll still sell to some casual buyers or some people who don't use blu ray yet but if you release a DVD but say that there is a chance a blu ray will come later, people are more than likely just going to wait than double dip, which MVM could misread as people having no interest in the series as opposed to no interest in DVDs. It's why I'm quite worried MVM might change Love Live plans. They've already said they're putting out dual audio blu ray release in Q1 2016, so I'm not sure it will sell well because despite the popularity of the show, people might hold out for the blu ray, which they might decide to scrap if sales aren't up to snuff. I really hope they don't, I know I'll be waiting for the blu ray release, but you never know.

I'd agree with that. I'm one of the people who would wait to see if there's a Blu-ray or just import if there's a reasonable alternative. I'd probably get a Love Live Blu-ray but I don't really bother with DVDs much these days.

I guess there's still a pretty big DVD buying crowd in the UK though so maybe it works for them somehow.

That's great news about the NGNL soundtrack.

The testing the waters with a DVD release thing is a bit iffy in my eyes too - I very nearly didn't pre-order Love Live because of it, knowing a BR release was likely coming next year (though I caved in the end). DVD releases are fine for big ticket, high profile shows like Naruto, where the buyer base mainly just wants cheap and cheerful. But when it comes to many of the shows MVM licenses which are arguably more niche/retro, I imagine it's the hardcore fan who appreciates pristine quality that's the main buyer, and DVD only just won't cut it there.

That said, if the 'only' option is to release DVD or nothing, I'll always be in favour of that. Anything is better than nothing.

I'm kind of skeptical when it comes to future 'retro' releases though, judging from the whole sorry affair of what happened to Patlabor - the sales figures were pretty awful from what I heard, and I imagine the lack of BR for the 2nd part scared away many buyers who might have gone for it otherwise.

The release of Love Live is slightly different; its Blu-ray release will be dual-audio where as the DVD is subtitled only... so if the DVD sells poorly its obvious that people were not only waiting for the BD upgrade but because they (may have) wanted an English Dub as well.

Its basically treated as a 'new release' (like MangaUK's Blue Exorcist Blu-rays).

Maid-Sama on the other hand will be 'touch-and-go'; poor DVD sales at the possibility of Blu-ray may mean a Blu-ray complete collection is cancelled in favour of a DVD complete collection; but if MVM comit to a Blu-ray release (especially a complete collection) then it will gain interest.

Basically distributors need to say what they are bringing out and not back-track on their ideas.

Ah yes, the old Manga Ent. argument. "Well nobody bought it on DVD, there's no point releasing it on BD"

Lose-lose for everybody.
