K-On Boxset & Haruhi movie Blu-rays Cancelled!

Ok, I could live with no K-on, since i wasn't really going to buy it anyways, but i was looking forward to Blu-Ray Disappearance. Now i'm hella disappointed. I'm gonna have to import for that now, and it looks like a lot of my stuff is going to be done the same way as before. That's a damned shame, since i was willing to put the effort into the Blu-Ray releases here, owning Xam'd Part 1, Redline, Summer Wars, EVA and so on. But i guess it just wasn't meant to be.

From now on, they should only announce blu-rays if they're definite..I've always given Manga the benefit of the doubt but I'm getting a tad annoyed now.
I'm expecting the Black Lagoon Blu-ray to be cancelled now too.

I'm pretty annoyed, been waiting for the blu-ray release of Haruhi since it was announced, even put off watching it so i could bask in blu-ray goodness ..urgh ..anyone know anywhere i can import it from? at a good price?

This is where I got it from,

Thanks, Manga. You've rekindled my desire to import like I used to. You've also made the task of finding a BD copy of Disappearance harder! Good job!

Question: Do Madman do international delivery or will I have to look elsewhere for their release of Disappearance?

Well apparently Madman in Australia have the BD release for Disappearance available, and it is our region of Blu-Ray, so we can import from there for it.

But the thing that bothers me with this in regards to Disappearance is that, you release the DVD early, i assume to gauge sales, then delay the Blu-Ray release until next month, then cancel it later. We maybe dedicated to certain releases, or some of us will be, but that doesn't mean we will buy both. So surely they can't just assume because the DVD sales may not be as high as they wanted, that the Blu-Ray won't sell? We haven't bought the film because we ARE waiting for the Blu-Ray release. It's a film i believe was always guaranteed to get the sales it needed, now it never will.

It could be that S2 of Haruhi tanked as well, though there could be a good reason for that...

They do, but a few of us were talking about this place in another thread yesterday. They guarantee no customs charges.

Dat price though /o\

It is a bit pricey, but thanks to a certain bunch of idiots there's not much choice.

It must be painful for Manga to keep acquiring blu-ray rights they will never use, and with Haruhi wasn't the delay because they had a technical problem, originally? So much time and money must already have been spent on these aborted releases. It's a disaster all around.

Since the only very dub-friendly US companies remaining are also active with blu-rays for those dubs, it's not a good position to be in.

Someone should ask UP1 if they want to start a department called UP4...

I did actually ask Axel a while ago, but they said no :) I could get behind a UP4 though, haha.

It got delayed from July to September when Bandai's got delayed. Then there was a problem with playback on PS3s which delayed it to April/Never.

It's too late for me now as I ordered from Planetaxel after the September delay but I would have taken one of those as well since I only use my PS3 for playing games.

Official Manga statement regarding K-On and Haruhi

Re cancelled #HaruhiMovie and #KOn blu-rays.
On behalf of Manga I wanted to apologize to all of those UK based customers who have been left bitterly disappointed by our decision not to release these titles on Blu-ray after publicly suggesting on this forum that we were planning on doing so. Please allow me to explain our decision.
I will start with K-On first. My original plan was to release K-On as a complete season set on double disc DVD and Blu-ray at the same time. However, we were reliant on Bandai US supplying us their English dub and when they announced they would release K-On! as 4 individual DVD and BD volumes in America we had to agree to follow suit if we wanted to release K-On! around the same time as them. I made the decision to delay our 2-disc BD release until Spring 2012 rather than copy Bandai and produce 4 very expensive single disc BD releases. Once we got to the end of 2011 we learnt that the cost of access to the dubs plus the high cost of accessing the HD master, authoring and mastering of the discs and manufacturing was prohibitively expensive. In addition, we also realised that we would not be able to break even on the production of the Blu-ray.
With regards to the Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya we were meant to release a Blu-ray in November and found out that the BD disc replication master we were sharing with Madman and which was supplied by Bandai USA did not work on Region B Playstation 3, so we had to scrap it and start again. Once again, we had to pay high access fees for the dub, and would have to pay a very steep access fees for the HD-master (we cloned Madman's PAL DVD replication master for our DVD) and that combined with new authoring and mastering fees left us with another release that was going to lose Manga money. If Manga keeps losing money we go out of business and everyone loses!
I spend all of my time am the Manga office fighting tough and nail for you guys, the British anime fans, to ensure that we pick up the best new series and movies and get them out here as soon as possible. I listen to your comments; every last one of them, every day here on Twitter and Facebook and I answer most of them too. No-one should doubt how much I and my colleagues here at MangaUK care about you, the customer. We do not take decisions like this lightly. I personally, fought to maintain these Blu-ray releases against stiff opposition from my superiors, but the commercial considerations of running a successful company overruled my objections about the damage to our brand's credibility should we not release these titles.
In summary, I would say that while we have made a sensible commercial decision, we have created a situation that is alienating to a good deal many of you and I sincerely hope that over time we can make it up to you.
So, there you have it. Straight from the horse's mouth. I cannot apologize enough to the customers we have disappointed with this decision. I hope that with time you can appreciate us for what we tend to get right, more than what we tend to get wrong. I am personally looking forward to 2012 and you have my assurance that any new BD releases announced for this year will be released. We already have Samurai Girls, Bleach Movies 1,2 and 3, Mardock Scramble and Roujin Z confirm by @KazeUK plus a whole heap more to confirm later in the year. We have learnt a lot from 2011, particularly when it comes to Blu-ray and I am confident we will start making better decisions that benefit both the business and you, our valued customers going forward.

Yours sincerely,

Jerome Mazandarni

Never mind Bluray being dead in the water here in the UK, i would consider Manga even more so now...what a load of rubbish. Been holding off for the Haruhi film to be released in the UK only to be let down yet again. I seem to remember them saying one of the reasons it wasnt released the same time as the dvd was because of playability with the PS3...is that really the case i wonder?

Future Manga licenses like Fairy Tail for example have a bluray region-free release in the US so i might aswell go down the importing route completely now. Thankfully we have still got one decent anime distributor in the UK...step forward MVM! (would say 2 but i dont see anything new to come from Beez)

Anyone want to call for the sacking of Jerome???

Very strange tidbits in that explanation! I wonder why Bandai Entertainment's Haruhi master specifically doesn't work in region B PS3s (their region A release worked perfectly in my foreign PS3).

Also interesting to hear that the dub pricing was hurting them, as I'm sure they've said before that dubs were super cheap for them which is why they can be profitable with smaller runs than the original company which produced the dub. Bandai must have been selling its dubs at a more reasonable price (for them) than Funimation and co, which in turn must have hurt Manga's "race to the bottom" pricing strategy badly. I can certainly see how Manga's policy of cheap anime coupled with a shrinking purchasing fanbase here would be damaged by a company charging a lot for its dub rights, and their cheap anime plan entirely relies on dubs to create a large enough pool of buyers here.

Jerome completely irritates me as a person but I appreciate him bothering to make a proper, factual statement instead of mouthing off. I hope Manga UK can figure something out for their strategy going forward other than just distributing Kaze titles and the occasional DVD-only smash hit.

It was actually the only time i've seen him not mouthing off the fanbase considering past shenanigans

Great, another 2 BD releases scrapped that I would have bought. I think that makes 5 now.
I think it's time to move the Region A BD player up the priority list.

Looks like the Black Lagoon bd is safe (as well as other Kaze/Manga releases such as Roujin Z & Mardock Scramble),

@MangaUK Considering Haruhi & K-ON! blu-rays have been cancelled, are you still selling Black Lagoon on Blu-Ray as Neo mag said?

MangaUK Manga Entertainment
@DanniHanwell Hi Danni. Black Lagoon is a Kaze release that we are distributing for them, so yes, it will happen.

I expect they will do, but remember all of the ones that have been cancelled were considered definite at the time they were announced.

A previous comment said that dubs are normally provided free of charge along with the license. Remember that rant about a company that they were never going to work with again? Reckon it is Bandai USA?

Black Lagoon is a Kaze release that we are distributing for them, so yes, it will happen.
