Hollywood announces new live action Akira films

Considering I thought the animated version was pretty ****, I'm sure I'll LOVE the Hollywood version. -___-

At least it'll have good special effects...if nothing else.

I am glad the movie is going to be based on the Manga version and not the anime version as the manga version is so much better!

Give the live action movie a chance! OK?

:)

That is about the most depressing article you could possibly read about a film that doesn't leave me too optimistic to begin with.

Sounds good if u like motorbikes and stuff...the comics were better and probably will sell like crazy if Akira is revived in the US.

I think it could only be worse if when questioned about Kaneda/ Tetsuo casting the directer said "who?"

For a movie that NEEDS all the support it can beegrudgingly dredge from fans, this guy has no clue how to do it right. PG-13 is one thing, since it sounds like he had no control over it, plus PG-13s can often be 15s over here, but the "I want it to be simplified so morons can understand it" is just...

I mean it's not that complicated to start with =/ boy meets psychic boy, awakens psi-powers, wants to rule the world, slightly confusing explosion happens creating a new universe or something. The last bit is the only bit anyone would have difficulty with =/

But then revealed that WB want them to bring it in at a much safer (and more financially beneficial) PG13.
That pretty much sums it all up for me. I know they have to make their money on these things, but surely making something more "fan friendly" would rake the dollars in, and give it a huge fan base.

exactly. By simplifying they won't rake in new fans, new viewers probably won't "get" the film and fans of the source will hate the changes.

Funniest thing in that link is the 'American Akira' vid. Not many things make me laugh out loud any more - but that managed it. I even watched it twice.

And now, a brief message to Hollywood:

NO! DO IT PROPERLY OR NOT AT ALL, THANK YOU!

Seriously guys - this is shaping up to be The Film That Should Not Be. I'd been keeping an open mind on the possibilities it posed, and I don't think the Hughes brothers are bad film makers - they just have a lousy track record with comic book adaptations.

I CRINGE at the prospect of seeing this story dumbed down for a casual summer movie audience. And the studio wants to aim for a family friendly age certificate? Absurd.

This film is now officially boycotted.

Signed, HdE, rabid Akira fanboy, aged 33-and-a-half.

i think part of my soul has just been drained, i didn't know what's worse, dumbing it down to a PG13 or Americanising it

the amount of fails can be summed up in the picture below

OH NOES ! the proms tomorrow night. Yeah, there is probably going to be some prom added to the plot and Kanedah might be renamed to Amarika for poops and giggles.

It's being directed by the Hughes brothers (The Book of Eli, Dead Presidents, From Hell) so you can rest assured we'll get some great actors and brilliant visuals at the very least.

Not to disagree on that point - they're capable film makers, and they're sure to turn in a very polished movie experience - but I SERIOUSLY doubt the end product will bear a satisfying resembalnce to either the manga or the 1987 movie. I doubt very much that however good or bad their efforts turn out to be, the movie will feel like Akira.

Akira is the sort of story that just CANNOT be diluted and SHOULD NOT be tampered with. Hollywood seem hell-bent on missing the point with this property.

I'm not usually one to get so adamant about these things, and initially I was pretty receptive to the idea of a live action version of the story. But this story is damned important to me. It had a huge impact on me when I was growing into adulthood, and I read the manga every year.

Akira has a lot of subtleties, nuances and subtexts to it - and I don't like the odds of ANY major Hollywood studio allowing somebody to get those elements right.
