Good buy?

Here's what I sent the seller earlier on today:

Hi...

The collection arrived earlier on today. I didn't have time to open the box until 1 hour ago.

I'll start with the good: Seemingly no transit damage was done. Apart from a few marks on the first Heat Guy J set, the boxes are near enough perfect.

Now, moving onto the bad...

"IN ALMOST PERFECT CONDITION WITH NO SCRACHES OR MARKS"

While this was true for MOST of the DVD's, you either lied or didn't bother to check the DVD's before selling.

Volume 3 of Ai Yori Aoshi is in awful condition and has scratches all over. It wasn't loose on arrival. The other Ai Yori Aoshi are, rather oddly, in excellent condition, only the odd scratch or finger print.

Volume 10 of Saiyuki has a lot of scratches. Like with Ai Yori Aoshi, the other Saituki DVD's are in excellent condition. It wasn't loose.

Volume 1 of Heat Guy J is in pretty bad condition - One huge scratch that looks quite deep, LOTS of finger prints and a fair amount of small scratches. Volume 7 also has quite a few scratches.Vol. 1 and 7 of Heat Guy J were not loose on arrival. The other DVD's are in excellent condition.

Vol. 1 of Chobits has a deep looking mark. Vol. 2 of Chobits was loose on arrival, has one deep mark and a few scratches. The others look to be in excellent condition.

Whle not in awful condition, the first 2 Blue Sub 6 DVD's have a few scratches and finger prints. Disc 2 was loose on arrival.

Vol. 1 of Peacemaker has a lot of scratches.

There was also finger prints on a fair few DVD's, which I had to remove myself. Some of the cases also could've been cleaned up prior to you sending.

-----

If you are a liar, you know this already. If you were simply too lazy to check the DVD's, that makes you a bad seller. I just hope there are no playback problems with these DVD's...

This is why, as a collector, I find using eBay quite stressful. I usually wouldn't spend £87 in one go like this, but since the seller was obviously once a collector, the titles are rare and he had said ALL the DVD's were in near perfect condition...

That's why I've always been put off from buying from eBay.

Unlucky about the DVDs though, don't know how people can mistreat their DVDs that bad, all mine are in pristine condition.

Second hand + ebay = taking advertising statements with a pinch of salt.

But as long as they play ok I wouldn't be too worried myself.

A seller not having perfect grammar always seems to indicate that the seller is a liar, an idiot or both. This seller made mistakes in his description and didn't come across as professional when he's messaged me.

The worst of the DVD's (Vol. 1 of Heat Guy J and Vol. 3 of Ai Yori) didn't seem to have any issues when I tested them, so all should work out in the end. Also, I managed to get the huge amount of finger prints off the Heat Guy J DVD without scratching the DVD.

If they all work, I'm still happy - The majory of the DVD's are in excellent-mint condition and the boxes pretty much are perfect. They look stunning on my DVD shelf, the Heat Guy J box sets in particular being very eye-catching. I'm starting to have a collection worthy of jealousy. :D

If it is just finger prints the best thing I have found is the type of cloth you use for cleaning glasses. There are some scratch removal/re-coating solutions on the market but be warned they don't always work aswell as advertised.

The only time any of my discs have ever got scratched is accidental droppage or rattlers, I hate that sound when you pick them up off the door mat but luckly 95%+ of the time there is nothing wrong the disc just came loose on touchdown.

The worst disc I saw was when a friend opened the rental disc they brought round to watch, luckley I spotted it was covered in what appeared to be jam before sticking it in my £800 DVD player (spent way too much but thats what you get for being an early adopter on certain tech).

It seems I misjudged the seller; he certainly didn't lie on purpose. I just received a partial refund of £15, the P&P amount, and an apology.

I used some of my throwaway optical lens wipes. They got the finger prints and bits of stuff stuck on off with no trouble.

Chobits looks like it's hilarious: The preview for one the episodes made me lol.

BAH! One of the DVD's is faulty; Vol. 10 of Saiyuki. It crashes during the clean opening in the extras and causes my DVD player to have a system error if I try to open the clean ending. Thankfully, it only skips 2 minutes during the 3rd episode of the actual episodes, between the 2-4th minute.

I'm happy he gave me £15 compensation now... I just hope there's no other issues. I'm going to have to re-test other DVD's now. -__-

The point stand spending money on second hand money is frank waste of money when fan never had it so good with so many anime bargains out which support the industry:

1.) There are around 40 Bandai Anime legend boxsets/ normal boxsets ranging from 13 part series, 26 part and 50 series out for bargain prices.

2.) Funimation Start doing cheap boxset for there main shows and super cheap boxsets for slayers.

3.) Media Blaster are now doing a lot of sub only 13+ boxsets.

4.) Adv USA have been doing cheap slimpack series for years.

5.) MVM have always got a few titles going for £4.99 volume in their online shop.

6.) Manga are always discounted series to massive degree, tokyo underground and heat guy j are both out at only 7 pound now for 26ish part series. Ghost in the shell tv series can be brought for under 20 quid for two of best series in years.

7.) Beez are releasing several boxsets which can be brought for £15.99 including gunbuster 2, statos 4 and crest of the starts. Gunbuster 2 cost less to buy here than it does on region 1. You can also get fanatasic children series for 26 quidish aswell.

8.) Viz are releasing both naruto, prince of tennis, etc for around 20 pound for 13 episodes.

I bet some people can remember paying 14 pound for vhs with only 2 episodes of evangelion only in dub. Fans have never had it so luckily.

Buying second hand serves no purpose at all. Why spend money on second hand series when

1.) Little to no money is going back to distributer

2.) Money could be spent on plenty of bargain boxsets or cheap £4.99 dvds

3.) As buying anime second hand shows no commitment to the industry at all its only as bad as fansub which can be found for free and leaves your money left over spent on new anime releases which is a lot better.

4.) As you just found out the dvds you got not always in the best condition.

The only reason to buy dvd instead of fansubs is to support the industry otherwise if you don't want to support it you can always get anime for free. If you don't care about the industry yet spent money on second hand dvds it frankly idiotic and stupid.

The industry need the support otherwise the industry could collapse in it on itself. There little profit to be made in the anime industry and only few companies making good profits like funimation, viz (because of the manga sales) manga and madman. Do we want industry run by so few companies meaning monopoly on price and less choice.

Even the upcoming anime film might not help the industry at all that much, as can be seen by the recent graphic novels charts of 2007. Which is dominated by 575 of the top 750 being manga titles, it shows the USA comic book movies films like superman & spiderman are not helping the sales of their graphic novel much in America.

Even fansub may in future become a thing of the past, how do we know we will be able to freely download anime in the future. We can't predict whats going to happen in the next couple of decades.

We need support the industry or we could end up with a lot less choice for us to buy and with no longer the ability to get the unlicensed series we want anymore.

The first Saiyuki box set (6 DVD's) all work fine. The Chobits box set (7 DVD's) also all work work fine. I'm not holding me breath with so many still to test, but the situation is looking better than it was when I discovered Vol. 10 if Saiyuki is faulty.

Since I've been refunded £15, I can live with 1 faulty DVD, a few scratched DVD's and finger prints. I'm just glad the only faulty DVD so far has been an ADV DVD and the fault only lasts for 2 minutes... It could've been a lot worse.

2.) Funimation Start doing cheap boxset for there main shows and super cheap boxsets for slayers.

FUNimation's viridian sets are dire. They're like thick paper (not quite card) hand folded containers that you put the discs in. I don't personally own one, but I've seen pictures of the Spiral viridian set, and although the art looks alright, as a set to house discs it's pretty poor. The way the discs are stored makes it look as though they can be scratched quite easily, too.

Have to agree I got The Galaxy Railways Viridian Set and 1 of the discs is scratched, although I can't confirm that this is the packaging, I was concerned on opening it and to then find a scratch is a big disappointment. Looks like I be getting my scratch fixing equipment out.

Aion you might wanna get one, got mine from PC World for £25, only tried it once but it worked. On the website Its called an "IDEAL CD/DVD REPAIR KIT SKIP DOCTOR REPAIR KIT"

Sucks about the crappy DVD, Aion. I hope you enjoy Chobits. :D

Btw, what do you have against ADV? From what I own and have seen, they've been pretty consistent.

All I've heard from you is an opinion. You are saying these things as fact, but you have not actually given evidence in any shape or form.

Out of the DVD's I've tested so far...

Chobits: Looks like the perfect blend of comedy and romance.

Genshiken: Looks like a very funny slice of life show.

Saiyuki: It doesn't look amazing. It might make for decent viewing when bored.

Someday's Dreamers: I'm not sure... I'd need to watch this one properly.

I'll call you Dan3 from this point onwards. :D

Thanks, but it would be a better idea to send the DVD to Scratch Busters. It only costs £3.50 and they have a pretty good reputation. I don't think I'll ever be trying home scratch removal remedies again after the mess I made of my Suikoden I CD...

You misunderstand me: I'm happy the only faulty DVD so far is an ADV one because, unlike Geneon and Media Blasters, ADV are still in business and Saiyuki DVD's shouldn't be too hard to get for cheap.

Btw, does anyone know about these R1 ADV double volume cases? There's currently an auction on eBay for the 5th Saiyuki double volume, which I assume holds both volume 9 and 10. I need to know if it contains the exact same Vol. 10 DVD you'd get if you purchased Vol. 10 alone.

Sorry, I didn't know you were on at this hour Ryo. My bad. :p

Me have short temper and Dangerous Dave has been very annoying. The 'F' word seems to be a favourite of mine when I'm annoyed.

The discs are identical, you just get twice as many per purchase. I know this because I bought Saiyuuki so painfully slowly that they released the Double Barrel versions halfway through me collecting it, so now my set is numbered ridiculously 1, 2, 3, 4, 3, 4, 5, 6 or something.

Discs are definitely the same though.

100% sure? I ask because I picked up a Nadesico double volume set awhile back and the DVD's are labelled 'C' & 'D' instead of Vol. 3 & 4.

And, since I was too lazy to message you back, please do let me know when the next SecondSpin free int. shipping week is. The DVD I want will probably be OOS by then, though...
