Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (Rewatch)

I'm way too far behind to catch up on this (as in I wasn't around when you all started), will definetly be giving the show a proper run through some time soon though.

Feel free to start now and just discuss earlier episodes - or if you've already seen the first GiG it's not long until we hit the Second GiG. Or alternatively, since we're due a run of Complex episodes, if this is a re-watch for you, you could just re-watch the Complex episodes, and slot in with us when we get to the Complex string. Episode 20 starts the string, so you have a few days to Marathon episodes 4,5,6,9,11 [I'm pretty sure that's all so far].

Just an option anyway! We have 3 days until we're back onto Complex, so that only works out as 2 episodes a day and you'd be up to date! Then you can watch the Stand Alone episodes if you get extra time, and discuss them as and when you want to. You can post up about any episode prior to what we're on in here :)

Well, I've watched half the 1st gig, but don't remember exactly what episode I got up to :)

I'll definetly be watching it though, got to do something when my other half is on her 12 hour shifts and falls to sleep at about 9pm and I'm left on my lonesome :)

Episode 16 (Late)

Really enjoyed this episode - It's got a really nice feel to it. I really felt bad for Batou - not only was he a fan of the guy, but his beloved Tachikoma's being retired too? Gotta feel sorry for the guy. Really enjoyed the episode, and the fight scenes were done really well. I far preferred the fights in this episode than Motoko's in one of the earlier Stand Alone episodes. I think Motoko just suits a gun sometimes. One thing i'll never understand is why Batou wears that damn coat though, lol.

Episode 16 is a nice episode that just feels its real.

Episode 17
Does a good job of feeling like its england even down to the BBC being involved.

This one is an episode that shows you why Aramaki is the one in charge of section 9. As much the team seem to work on auto pilot. Aramaki does a 101 things behind the scenes so the team can get the job done.

Ep14. Sorry been on Holiday so not been watching, but have just watched it.

Fem (Chun-li?!) could of done with more background I feel, I liked the Idea of the spring powered firearm she used. Very retro.

I think the program had no ghost, or targeting Togusa but was simply doing what it did, make money for people. I assumed that his program had become so powerful it wasn't just working for him but everyone.

It was interesting noticing the majors increasing annoyance at the tachikomas increasingly non focused working.

Ep15
A good philosophical episode, something GITS is known for. Its a shame they feel that the tachikomas have to be destroyed. Why not just disarm them? With a rapidly developing mental structure, and the possability of a ghost, it seems madness to me to destroy/kill them.

The ability to "divide by zero" IE a false falsehood, shows that they are above standard AI/android capability.

Batou's attachment to them is understandble too.

EP16
Another good Batou character building episode. Anyone notice his wife and kid in his wallet? It also felt bad for Zaitsev's wife she seemed nice and Zaitsev didn't appreciate that. Also it got to Batou too which was nice to see. All in all two pretty bad episodes for Batou.

I'll probably get to see 17 tomorrow.

Yup, I spotted that. (The wife bears a passing resemblance to Motoko, don'tcha think?)

I actually take that as part of Batou's cover, though. We never see any indication of Batou having a life away from Section 9, and I believe he was established as being single in the manga. (Not that it necessarily has a bearing on the show)

ONLY READ IF YOU'VE WATCHED 2nd Gig and all 3 films:

Not a direct link to the story, but in Innocence or SSS (whichevers the one where his arm is shot off in the shop) Batou lives alone (bar the dog) so i'd personally take it that the picture is of the family he used to have. OR its just a cover story. But either way if you look into batous history (across the whols GITS world) he was a scout (hence the eyes) so its safe to say that the family picture is from batous life as a young adult atleast if at all and could possibly be dead or living but unaware of him being alive still.

Precisely, I thought it was funny with Motoko as his wife... I wonder if she knew ;)

In the Films he lives with Gabriel his Basset hound, Named after Oshii's own Basset.

I always considered him to be single and never met the right woman. Notice he makes more than one pass at the Major. I think he knows she isn't interested, but what the heck.

The picture WAS motoko with a child so that it was just a cover. Easy to doctor a photo even now let alone in super cyber brain hacking future. Probs did it as a giggle.

The only Gits film that work here is SSS. The other films are Mamori Oshii. His interprutation on GITS. The film your talking about is Innocence

Masamune shirow the manga creator. Is an advisore for GITS SAC and the movie SSS. Which it is heavily documented after Masamune shirows dislike on how studios ruined his creations when it came to animating them. Epeasicly when he was in the drivers seat for Black Magic M-66. Shirow dosnt like how people do his storys.

Which with Mamori Oshii's GITS which is the 95 film and Innocence. Shirow flipped ****. He was major pissed at how it turned out in the end.

Shirow was on hand with makeing sure that GITS SAC followed to what he wanted. It does. Shirow is happy how it turned out so much he is happy that it slides into being the start for the manga at the very end.

So what ever Mamori Oshii has done dosnt apply at all to this universe of GITS. Which as a major Masamune Shirow fan i agree with it.

Ps. Batou is a Bachelor for life and dosnt much live in his own home.

Episode 17 (Late)

An enjoyable episode, but not one of the greats. I can't really say much for this episode - I suppose it's just a chance to build Aramaki's character somewhat. He does show off his genius in this episode for sure.

EP18 A second deep episode for Aramaki regarding the death of a friend. Interesting ideas about what would happen with two personalities trying to coexist in one mind, and how both are no longer wholly separate.
Am I right in thinking the explosion at the assassination was put there by the Major to make him think he had completed the mission?

Dug out my boxset last night and watched the first episode.

So then #1.

A good introduction to the series, gifting the viewer recognisable characters from the first movie aswell as introducing us to a stronger focus on the political atmosphere within the shows world instead of all of the faux-philosophycal stuff that was shovled into the films.

But Oshii's first GITS film(never seen the second) was actually pretty good and probably even an improvement over the source material in many ways. He coudn't have been that pissed.

The GITS films are wierd, for me anyway, not in the sense that they're "odd" (although they are a bit), but in that I really enjoy them but I can't watch them through in one sitting, Blade Runner is exactly the same in this respect, I often fall asleep whilst watching either GITS film or Blade Runner, I call them my insomnia cures :D

Nope nope nope. Shirow did what he wanted in the manga. SAC is close to it and is fine for shirow as he did advise for it in that direction.

I agree with Shirow. I saw GITS in 97. The dub was very new, i didnt know. I have seen GITS severel time since. It never ever clicked with me. To be honest i never like GITS.

I baught the manga since i found out Shirow was the creator. I love Masamune shirow and his work. As demonstrated with Dominion Tank police under my name on the left.

I read the manga and loved it. The film made sense. Except i royaly didnt like the story of the movie. Its not Masamune Shirow.

So i agree with shirow on his feelings.

Gits SAC GIG 2 i feel weird about since Mamori Oshii got involved. it changes what i realy liked about SAC........I dont like Oshii.
