Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (Rewatch)

No one else to comment on Episode 6 yet? Aww.

Episode 7

The only thing I can really see in this episode is whether Ghost Dubbing means that an artificial being could be a human?

Hmm, it is an interesting thought isn't it. From what the manga mentions, and GITS 2 innocence, the ghost dubbed "shells" (clones?) become progressively less human, also the process of being dubbed slowly destroys the host.

There is an interesting mood shift in this episode to a melancholic feeling. There seems to be a feeling of desperation from Marcelo and Gondos actions which make it quite sad to watch.

An interesting episode but largely throw away.

Need to do some major catchup with this, will be a good excuse to watch the subs this time round... if I can make it past the first episode. The mind boggles as to how Manga screwed up the R2 subs that badly, and 2nd GiG was worse from what I read (yes, I am bitter I bought the R2 versions of both sets).

I'm rewatching my fansubs rather than be forced to watch the horribly paced and hard to read subs..

Episode 9

I was so happy with this episode. I really love how they developed Internet Chatrooms. It was great to see an idea of how they 'could be' in the future.

I really loved this episode for the discussion going on though - It was nice to see all these theories being thrown around, no matter how ridiculous they were. It's a really great episode. I'm curious about something though, Did Motoko actually meet the real Laughing Man when she was transferred? And was the other member who got transferred with her the Laughing Man if so?

Really great episode overall.

This is another episode I'm fond of. Not a great deal happens in it, it doesn't *really* advance the ongoing plot that much, but it sure is a diverting slice of anime.

The realisation of the webchat session is really clever. I like how the participants are tossing in live video feeds and such as they chat. Sort of like the super-hi-tech equivalent of when you use a message board and somebody posts something from a relevant source.

Biggest thing I dig is the first appearance of Motoko's 'Chroma' persona. I notice that the sleeve to the DVD thinpak has a gorgeous illustration of the Chroma construct as you'd see it in the manga. It's my favourite alternate version of Motoko.

And here's a thought: You might notice that Chroma looks similar to Motoko, but with a few subtle differences. Her hair is a different shade, and her chin is more sharply pointed. Given that Motoko's body is entirely prosthetic, and this construct is something she uses to surf the net, could this be a more accurate projection of the 'real' Motoko?

Just a thought!

Or like the new Windows Live Messenger ;)

Mhm I'm not sure. I'd say that this is just a form Motoko uses so people don't recognise her or somethin'. It's a thought indeed though.

Just watched ep8, (going to watch ep9 at lunch). I had forgotten this episode. I really like it. You get to see some humanity from Motoko, and some of her past history (later expanded on in the 2nd gig).

You also get to see the Tachikoms a bit more too which I like. Its interesting that their cannon’s have a key which can only be removed by the humans.

Wish I was watching the series again with you but I've lent out my whole GitS collection to a mate. I remember epidsode 9 very well though.

Not alot really happens in the episode in the way of furthering the story but I found the episode very entertaining non the less. The fact that it is able to hold my attention with a nothing but a conversation is impressive.

Also, like has been said, it's an exciting prospect to imagine forum converstaions being like that in the future (far off future that is). We'll get there eventually. XD

Great episode and very rewatchable too.

Ep9, an interesting episode. We lean about the laughing man case and a lot about the copy cats. The ability of Motoko to pull that other participant out of the session was an interesting flexing her muscles. I’ts interesting to know it was him who she “bumped” into in the security guards head though.

The forced transfer I think was caused by the laughing man but the host of the session was sucked in too. If he is part of or anything to do with the laughing man or just an innocent bystander is open to conjecture.

I can't wait for Ep10, its a great episode...

I'd have a REAL problem if that was ever implied in canon - Motoko has to have an air of mystery about her, and it's more fun to guess at these things.

I was kinda thinking along the lines of what the Matrix movies call 'Residual Self Image'.

Still, whatever... the episode gives us a glimpse of Chroma, and that's a good thing!

Here be spoilers if you haven’t seen EP10…

I think today is EP10.. . So i've skipped to it.

IMHO a stand out (alone) episode of the series. It adds so much depth and character to Batou (my favourite character in GITS, and largely uncovered in other GITS media). The idea that America used dirty tricks in a campaign in WWIII isn’t so unlikely. Cases similar to this occurred in Vietnam, and it has parallels to Apocalypse now. Also the cases of rendition in the current war on terror hint at the darker side.

The slowly building tension while everyone else tries to workout what is going on while Batou seethes with growing rage gives a good idea of his level of self control. Understandable when you see the flashbacks to his past.

The direction of this episode is very good, well paced and thought out. The CIA operatives are very slimy and foreshadow their later involvement in 2nd Gig.

Episode 10

Have to agree with Hokum on the quality of this episode - It was amazing. I felt genuinely ill at the thought of what that guy was doing. You really feel sorry for Batou in this episode.

I agree with Hokum too in that this scenario doesn't seem unlikely to happen either - It wouldn't surprise me to hear that America would use tricks like this.

Outstanding episode overall.

Just watched episodes 10 and 11.

Episode 10 really is excellently done, isn't it? I like how there are some moments of fitting humour in the mix as well - the Tachikomas waving at the surveillance camera, Togusa racing back to throttle the CIA guy at the end of the episode - all good fun.

And what a tight script! It REALLY rattles along!

Are we talking about episode 11 yet?

Episode 10 was a great! I managed to slip it in to my evening's viewing schedual.

So much going on in the episode. Like HdE said, it really did rattle along. The discussions between the characters are as interesting as ever. Very rare that you get a series where you wouldn't complain if they just sat there and talked for the whole epiodes... oh wait, they did do that in episode 9. =P

Watching this episode has made me realise that I can't just start the series here. I freaking love SAC (and this just refreshed my passion), so it has now become my mission to retrieve my collection from my mate so I watch it all from the start.

Feel free. I don't have to start it lol. Today is Episode 11 so go crazy :) As it's a re-watch in here no one is likely to go ape over spoilers lol.

Just keep up with us from here man - it's nice to have extra opinions and discussions :)

Ep11, ahh so that's where the Laughing man had hidden. Hmm so can we assume the host of the chat session was the other kid? An interesting idea, is at which point did Togusa get hacked?

I'm wondering if it was while he was walking around that room with all the kids plugged in, as he suddenly jumped when he realised when he wasn't in the room any more... Also what happened to the woman? Also did anyone notice the cyborg was replaced by a statue? Also the blood vanishing between him getting hit and the Major finding him...

One episode a day, and we've been doing this for 11-12 days. Do the maths man. You got at least 2 weeks 'till we move onto the second GiG lol.

On Topic: I'll be going to watch Ep#11 now 8) Lookin' forward to it being a Complex episode n all :)

I was wondering at which point Togusa got hacked, too. I didn't notice the cyborg being replaced though. I did notice the blood being cleared up - I wasn't sure if it was just an inconsistency though.

I really love Episode 11 for all the Catcher in the Rye references. The lefty baseball mit, and the two quotes - It's great to see! Has anyone else here also read Catcher in the Rye?

This was one of the episodes I remembered well from the first time I saw Ghost in the Shell. Really love this episode.
