Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (Rewatch)

If no one objects I suggest we resume either on 7th of March, 14th of March or 21st of March then.

Whichever people want to go with, i'll follow.

I'm up for any of them, but why start on a Monday?

I figured if you watch in your lunch hour - it was safest to assume you'd work a Monday lol. I really don't mind any date. I also figured 'Start of the week, start of a new series'. Really don't matter to me though. Just not starting on 17th, 18th or 19th as I'm away.

I mean, HdE will you just be able to blitz more than one episode when you get some quieter time?

Unfortunately, that's not really a realistic prospect for me. I just got a HUGE influx of paid lettering work today, so it looks like I'm tied up now for a month or more. I really need to pen a few reviews for AUKN as well.

Still, I'll stick to plan A and try to keep abreast of the conversation here. I'm pretty conversant in 2nd GIG anyway (GITS SAC is my ALL TIME favourite TV show!) so I may be able to pitch in with a few thoughts here and there.

I really meant to post this while the s1 discussion was going on, but it must have slipped my mind.

There was an alternate OP for the series that (to the best of my knowledge) has never showed up on any of the US or UK DVDs. ANN lists it as a 're-run OP', but it's certainly the first I've heard of a new opening being put in for a series' repeat.

Not nearly as good as Inner Universe, but it's interesting nonetheless.

There's one for the 2nd Gig as well, but I'll hold off posting that until we've got a few episodes worth of "Rise" under the belt.

Finished! Had no internet over the weekend, so blitzed the final 8 episodes or so (as well as reading issue 1 of XIII a couple of times and re-reading Arkham Asylum).

Before I go ahead, the guitar line from the above video plays in a couple of the menu's on the boxset for 1st gig I have.

Anyway, call me thoroughly impressed, it was beginning to be a bit of a grind, the Stand Alone episodes, whilst entertaining, sometimes felt like they were never going to end and felt too much like filler on occassion, theres none I can pinpoint exactly, but I think they struggled for 26 episodes in all honesty.

The Complex episodes seemed to struggle for pacing too, and I think thats a problem with what I've seen of GITS in general.

Episode 25 was absolutely phenominal I might add, genuinely moving, paced exactly right and they didn't seem to struggle to make the action sequences too quick or too slow (something I've felt they didn't get right for alot of the series, sometimes there was too much energy, sometimes that enegy would barely be there...), and whilst the revelatory episode right at the end was pretty good, it didn't satisfy enough.

Still, I'm happy to start the 2nd Gig when others are.

@RivaOni:

I can understand your comments about the Stand Alone episodes - I enjoyed them all but I can understand where you come from. I think the reason they felt so 'long' is because there is a stint with no Complex episodes - I can see that being a realistic reason why.

I'm gonna have to disagree about the pacing on the Complex episodes though - I thought it was really well done! Are you able to comment on what episodes you felt lacked?

Aside: If Hokum and Riva can say how much notice they need to start the re-watch, and anyone who's serious about joining in could post about what date is best for them to start (within reason) I'd appreciate it. If i've heard nothing by say, Thursday, I'll just assume the 14thish is a good time to start. Maybe even this Saturday - I need opinions though!

Thanks

I can start whenever really, although it'll be my first time through the 2nd gig ;)

As for the pacing of the complex episodes, I can't really pick out which episodes specifically, I'm intending to go through them in one burst one day this week whilst my daughters at school, there's 12 episodes right? Which works out as just right for me to watch in a day, maybe two ;).

If you're ready Prof Irony and Riva, I see no reason why not to start tommorow, Wednesday or Thursday then. HdE says busy for ages - so if we can get this going soon it'd be good.

If it was Prof Irony, Riva, Hokum and myself we could get nice discussion going too. I'm pretty sure it'd be best to get this going nice and soon - so which day do you prefer? (Hopefully Hokum will be around tonight at some point...)

I honestly don't mind as far as the start day's concerned. I'll probably try and watch the first episode tonight anyway, but I'll hold off posting about it until everyone's ready.

'Fraid so, fellas. Lettering comic books takes a fair while. I reckon I'm looking at three solid weeks of work ahead.

Like I say, I'll try to get by and chip in where possible.

Right after Prof. Irony has saisd that I'd like to propose starting on Wednesday. If Hokum replies with an OK then we'll get episode 1 discussion started on Wednesday.

If Riva can confirm that's good too - that'd be great!

OK since Hokum hasn't replied I'm gonna say this is starting as of Friday regardless as of whether we get replies or not. Sorry to be messing you around here Riva - I can't contact him outside of the forum so we'll just need to hope he joins in!

So yeah - lets look forward to Friday!

As I've said, I really don't mind which, even if I don't watch it on that night, I've shown I can quite easily catch-up ;)

Need to get my hands on an English dub version, I usually prefer subs but having the 1st gig boxset and having watched that in English switching to Japanese voices (I watched the first five minutes of episode 1 to see what I had) has kind of thrown me and I'm too broke to buy the 2nd gig boxset just yet.

I remember this opening from SAC for the first two episodes when it first came out?

Ah yeah, I remember that one as well - a friend of mine gave me a few fansubbed episodes of the first season before the DVDs came out. That one being dropped from the DVDs in favour of the CGI opening doesn't surprise me, what with the music track being the same, but the GET9 opening being left out rather puzzled me - it was completely different. Normally, I would suspect some kind of rights issue on the music, but if, as Riva said, they used the track on the DVD menus, I don't know what must have gone on there.

It's not a big deal or anything, I just thought it was a bit odd.
